Local girl to attend leadership forum

LAKE ELSINORE - Treena Silva of Lake Elsinore has been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., from Tuesday to Sunday.

The nonprofit Congressional Youth Leadership Council puts on the conference to develop leadership skills in the nation's youth.

The conference, themed "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today," allows the participants to meet with people working within the three branches of the U.S. government, as well as members of the media and international community.

Silva is a junior at Elsinore High School.

Chambers honor Students of Month

Area chambers of commerce recently honored Students of the Month for November.

The students received a luncheon in their honor at a Sizzler Restaurant.

The Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce's students were Paul Escobar and Flor Molina of Elsinore High School, Shaun MacDonald and Sara Ginter of Ortega High School, and Aaron Montgomery and Jean Janssen of Temescal Canyon High School.

The Perris and Menifee Valley chambers honored Dean Bong and Tatianna Perez of Paloma Valley High School, Erick Esparza and Amanda Brock of Perris High School, and Juan Salgado and Lindsey Ekwall of Perris Lake High School.

Finally, in Temecula, Students of the Month were Cary Crall and Jennifer Seneor of Chaparral High School, Matthew DeRemer and Erin Poole of Linfield Christian School, Joshua Pipkins and Felicia Canchola of Rancho Vista High School, and Matthew Whitaker and Kendyl Palmer of Temecula Valley High School.

Cheerleaders make top 12

LAKE ELSINORE - The American School Spirit Awards recently picked Temescal Canyon High School's cheerleading squad as one of the top 12 in the nation.

The awards, sponsored in part by Varsity.com, picked squads based on grade-point average, cheerleading skills, school and club involvement, and letters of recommendation.

Thompson to offer bingo, book fair

MURRIETA - Thompson Middle School will hold its second annual Family Bingo Night & Bookfair on Wednesday.

The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. at the school, 24040 Hayes Ave.

Officials say there is more than $1,000 in prizes to give away. To play costs nothing. A sub sandwich, chips and a drink cost $5.

Wildomar school holding toy drive

WILDOMAR - David A. Brown Middle School is holding a toy drive to help out needy families over the holidays.

Drop off donations over the next two weeks at the school's front office, 21861 Grand Ave.

Paloma to host cheer tournament

MENIFEE - Paloma Valley High School will host the Cheer Leaders of America Regional Tournament on Saturday.

The competition begins at 10 a.m. at the school, 31375 Bradley Road.

Registration costs $22 per team competitor per division, and per specialty division competitor per division.

Elks lodges offer scholarships

Local Elks lodges are accepting applications for the Most Valuable Students Scholarship Contest.

Run by the Elks National Foundation, the scholarship will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated students. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

Applications are due Jan. 14. They can be picked up in some school offices, or downloaded at www.elks.org/enf.

Great Oak has bingo Mondays

TEMECULA - Great Oak High School Academic Leadership Society hosts Bingo Night on Mondays.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. at the school, 32555 Deer Hollow Way. The early-bird bingo session starts at 5:30, and the regular games get under way at 6. Proceeds will be used to fund the school's extracurricular programs.
