MURRIETA -- Murrieta police arrested two men from a Las Vegas trucking company on Tuesday, one after they pulled his rig over and found that there was a warrant out for his arrest and the other for allegedly leaving the scene after crashing the same truck later in the day.

Authorities first pulled the tractor-trailer over about 7 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Juniper Street and Adams Avenue because it was overloaded and too wide to navigate city streets, according to Murrieta police Cpl. Jay Froboese.

The truck had been carrying lumber and prefabricated roof trusses and Froboese said the driver did not have the necessary permits to drive the truck on city streets. He was on his way to a nearby construction site.

And because the driver, Guillermo Aguirre Santana, 48, did not speak English, a U.S. Border Patrol agent was brought in to translate, Froboese said. Border Patrol agents then informed Murrieta police that Aguirre Santana was an illegal immigrant and that he was wanted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for allegedly committing lewd acts with children, he said.

He was arrested and booked into Southwest Detention Center in French Valley, where he was being held Monday afternoon without bail, jail records show.

From there, Froboese said, the Las Vegas company that employs Aguirre Santana, Mendoza Trucking, was informed that he was arrested and that the company would have to reload the truck and secure the permits to drive it on city streets.

Nearly six hours later, Froboese said, he arrived at the scene of an accident at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Ivy Street and found that it involved the same truck from the morning incident. The trailer had tipped over as the truck rounded a corner at the intersection.

"We get here, I see this truck and I recognize it was the truck from this morning," Froboese said.

Gone were the tractor and the driver, he said. Left were a busted fire hydrant that was spouting water into the air and a partially knocked over utility box.

Police then went to the construction site where the truck was going to deliver its load, Froboese said, and found the alleged second driver, Pablo Mendoza, 49, walking on a nearby street. He had scrapes on his arms that indicated he might have been involved in an accident, the corporal said.

"We stopped him, interviewed him and he admitted to being the driver," Froboese said.

Mendoza, one of two owners of the trucking company, was arrested and still being held by Murrieta police Monday afternoon.
