SAN DIEGO - An El Cajon couple who inflicted more than 30 fractures on their 3-month-old daughter were convicted today of felony child abuse and personal infliction of great bodily injury.
Charles Terry Welch, 28, and Jennifer Welch, 29, each faces 15 years in prison when they are sentenced May 5 by Judge John Davidson.
After the verdicts were announced, Jennifer Welch tried to ingest a handful of pills but was unsuccessful, prosecutor Garry Haehnle said.
A baby sitter discovered a "bubble" or "click" on Malia Welch's back last year and the infant was taken to Balboa Naval Hospital.
Tests revealed fractured ribs, two skull fractures, and other fractured bones of the baby's shoulder, legs and foot, according to trial testimony.
The baby - now 18 months old - recovered from her injuries and has been fine since she was taken from her parents in January 2003, Haehnle said.
