CARLSBAD -- A pair of burglars smashed through the locked front doors of a Carlsbad department store Friday morning, broke into glass display cases and got away with jewelry, authorities said.
Seven employees were at work inside the Sears store at the Westfield shopping mall on El Camino Real shortly before 6 a.m. when a pair of people dressed in black with black ski masks broke through the store's glass front doors, Lt. Matt Margo said.
The frightened employees ran out another door and called police, Margo said. Police responded within a couple minutes and searched the area for the burglars but did not find them.
The burglars smashed three glass display cases and took jewelry, Margo said. Store employees were conducting an inventory Friday to determine the loss. Store surveillance tape shows the incident but does not help police identify the disguised thieves, Margo said.
