Members of the Oceanside High School Marching Band and Color Guard are working hard to raise money to cover the high costs of competing this school year in festivals and contests, and to do it, they've come up with something everyone can use: a calendar.
The band calendar is one of a series of fund-raisers the band kids are planning. For parents, faculty and band boosters, the calendar will remind people of the events in which the band will participate. For businesspeople, it will offer an opportunity to advertise and show support.
For less than $100, you can display a business card-sized ad in the calendar, and for $25 more, on the band's Web site at www.upv3.com/ohsband.

BIG BASH -- The 20th annual Old Mission Heritage Ball will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the courtyard of Mission San Luis Rey. This party is the premier black-tie gala for North County. The annual bash is the major fund-raising event for restoring and preserving Mission San Luis Rey. The evening begins in the Rose Garden for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, featuring, as always, fresh oysters and shrimp. Then the party moves to the Garden of the Franciscans for a filet mignon dinner, with music by the Society Beat Orchestra for dancing until midnight. Cost: $200, but that price includes everything from adult beverages, meal, dancing, parking and, for those who need it, free lodging at the Retreat Center. Call (760) 757-5941.
REAL HOOT! -- The new structure of offices and Hooters Restaurant on Vista Way will open soon. Jane McVey, economic development director, told the Oceanside Rotary Club last week that the project is nearly ready to open in Oceanside. She noted the official name for the project is: "The Hoot Wink Building."
TOP PICK -- Oceanside's Mike Weseloh is moving to the big time as a football referee -- from high school to the NCAA college gridiron. The veteran official has been one of Southern California's top high school referees for several years. He'll split his time between the Pacific-10 Conference and the Mountain West Conference. First up: Eastern Washington at San Diego State, then Mike travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the Louisiana State University at the University of Arizona. He'll be a line judge and side referee (was he in or out of bounds on that catch) respectively in the two conferences. As heady as this new assignment is, Mike says he'll keep his day job, that of general manager at Weseloh Chevrolet. Congrats!
