Riverside County community briefs: 'Charlotte's Web' offered tonight

TEMECULA —— The Moonlight Movie in the Park series will feature "Charlotte's Web" at Harveston Community Park, 28582 Harveston Drive tonight.

Arts and crafts begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by group activities at 7:30 and the movie at dusk.

Flute, rock bands in Old Town tonight

TEMECULA —— Duchicela, an Andean Flute band, and the rock band Gem Tones will be the performers tonight in Old Town's Hot Summer Nights series.

Duchicela utilizes handmade flutes to create original tunes and renditions of popular songs. They will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Country Porch at Third and Old Town Front streets.

The Gem Tones are a three-member family rock 'n' roll band featuring a father and two teenagers. They will play from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Rosa's Cantina alcove, also near Third and Old Town Front streets.

Live music can also be heard at Stellar Cellar on Front Street, Old Town Coffee Shoppe on Third Street and the Wine and Beer Garden at Front and Sixth streets.

Dynamite Dave will entertain at the Panache parking lot, where there will be a party jump and rock wall for children.

Other activities include midway games. There is a fee for the games, with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs leadership team. Pony and carriage rides will also be available.

Dance company performs

TEMECULA —— A cast of more than 1,000 dancers from the Temecula Dance Company will perform this weekend at St. Jeanne De Lestonnac School.

Temecula Dance Company features dancers aged 2 to 65 and features 100 award-winning competition-level dancers. The show will feature a mix of young dancers, the World Famous Tapping Dads and the father/daughter number, featuring more than 200 dads and girls.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $11 at Temecula Dance Company, 28404 Felix Valdez Road. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Actresses sought for auditions

MURRIETA —— The Electra Theater Company is holding auditions this weekend for "Flesh and Blood." They are looking for six actresses between the ages of 25 and 60 to play multiple roles in a drama about a mother's search for her daughter.

The play will be staged Aug. 26-28 and Sept. 2-4 in San Diego with most rehearsals in Temecula.

Auditions will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Temecula Valley Church of Religious Science, 26871 Hobie Circle.

Actresses are asked to call 303-1414 to schedule an audition time.

This will be the first play for the company, which recently moved to Temecula after 15 years in the Bay Area.

Basil festival on Saturday

TEMECULA —— The fourth annual Basil Festival, "A Taste of Pesto," will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ama's Herboretum in Wine Country.

There will be pesto demonstrations and tasting and ways to have fun with basil at the free event. There will be herb plants and basil food as well as vendors.

Art of listening to be taught

TEMECULA —— A workshop entitled "The Sacred Art of Listening" is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Unity Church.

'Fiddler, Jr' to be staged

WILDOMAR —— "Fiddler on the Roof, Jr." will be staged at 7 p.m. July 29 and 2 and 7 p.m. July 30 at the Stephen Price Theatre at Elsinore High School.

The production is the culmination of a six-week theater workshop geared to children 7 to 15 put on by the Fine Arts Network and Temecula Performing Arts Company.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for youths and seniors.

Legal education seminar set

TEMECULA —— The deadline is Sunday to register for the California Association of Legal Document Assistants Aug. 13 seminar at the Temecula Library.

Kindercamps in Wildomar

WILDOMAR ——- A summer learning program for children and parents will be held Aug. 12 at Jean Hayman Elementary.

At the kindercamp sessions, children will be assessed for school readiness, attend a pre-K class while parents attend a weeklong session covering such subjects as health, state education standards and how they can get involved in their child's education. Parent instruction is in English and Spanish.

Young Marines to interview vets

MURRIETA —— The Temecula Valley Young Marines will be interviewing veterans as part of the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project Aug. 13 and 14.

They wish to speak to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars and the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as those who worked in supporting war efforts.

Storm car show set for Aug. 20

LAKE ELSINORE —— The Lake Elsinore Storm baseball team will host the fifth annual Diamond Car Show Aug. 20. The show will begin at 3:30 p.m. and end at 7:05 p.m., coinciding with the start of the Storm's game against Stockton.

The $35 entry fee includes registration, T-shirt, pregame barbecue for two and two tickets to the game. Extra picnic packages, including a shirt, picnic and game, are $20. The picnic will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

All cars will be invited to participate in an on-field parade prior to the game. Trophies will be presented after the third inning.

Early registration deadline is Aug. 1. Cars can be registered on game day if space allows.

Tiny tot class takes registration

LAKE ELSINORE —— A kindergarten readiness course called Tiny Tots will be offered in August by the city of Lake Elsinore.

Blood drives set in area

The Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties will sponsor three blood drives in the community in the next week.

The bloodmobile will be at the following locations:

  • Automobile Club of Southern California, 26403 Ynez Road, in Temecula, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday;
  • Acacia Park Resort Apartment Homes, 29605 Solana Way, Temecula, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 29;
  • Aromas Coffee and Floral Shop, 29950 Hunter Road, Murrieta, 2 to 7 p.m. July 29.

Donors will receive a Blood Bank water bottle. At Aromas, donors will also receive a discount coupon toward any floral purchase and a medium-sized drink.

Donors should be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors 76 and older must provide the Blood Bank with annual written permission from their physician.

Arthritis group holds bike ride

RIVERSIDE —— The Arthritis Foundation is recruiting cyclists for the 2005 Amgen California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour to raise money for arthritis research and programs in the Inland Empire.

The multi-day ride, which begins Sept. 24, travels from San Francisco to either Solvang or Los Angeles.

To join the tour, participants must collect at least $2,900 in donations.

Pet assistance being offered

RIVERSIDE —— The Riverside Humane Society Pet Adoption Center in partnership with The Community Foundation, is offering financial assistance to qualified senior citizens to cover certain pet expenses.

Seniors who qualify include those who are older than 65, are a permanent resident of the county and have a maximum monthly income of $1,000 if single or $2,000 per couple. Only the pets of qualified senior citizens are eligible.

Qualified seniors can receive assistance paying for veterinary care, dental care, diagnostic tests, annual exams and vaccinations, on-going treatments, euthanasia services and transportation to and from the veterinarian's office.

Seniors' Golden Years seeks members

TEMECULA —— The Seniors' Golden Years of Temecula is seeking new members from the Temecula area and surrounding communities. The club offers services and activities for seniors and meets at the Mary Phillips Senior Center at 41845 Sixth St.

Business meetings are conducted at 12:45 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. A potluck is offered at 4 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month, and bingo is played at 2 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Services include the trip program coordinated by Esther Rhodes. A list of trips is posted at the center. Some are day trips to places such as the Nixon Library, Palm Springs Follies or Indian casinos. Others last for several days, with destinations including Laughlin, Nev., Sedona Adventure and Sacramento/Napa.

Kittens available for adoption

Five 12-week-old orphaned kittens who were rescued and hand raised are ready to be adopted. There are two male orange tabbies, one calico, one dilute calico and one tortoiseshell.
