Wildlife Assist to hold orientation

Carnival to feature soccer pros

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Soccer Club will host a free carnival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6 at Kit Carson Park. Divorce recovery group meets Tuesdays

ESCONDIDO -- The Heart Healers divorce recovery group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Emmanuel Faith Church, 639 E. Felicita Ave. For 20 years, the group has helped those facing the challenges of a broken relationship. Friends of Tibet to present film

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Friends of Tibet will present the film, "Home To Tibet," at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. A reception and the chance to view the photography exhibit called "Speak Truth To Power," featuring 50 portraits of defenders of human rights by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Eddie Adams, will be held before the film at 6 p.m. Guest speaker will be Yangchen Tsemtso, who appears in the film.

Fraternity Feast series continues

Fraternity House Inc. is hosting its fourth annual Fraternity Feast series to benefit Fraternity House and Michaelle House, homes where men and women disabled by HIV/AIDS can receive comprehensive care and services in order to rebuild their health and return to independent living, or where they can spend their days in comfort and dignity. Fraternity Feasts include:

  • "Mrs. Mudd's Chocolate Extravaganza," for 100 guests, is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 12, hosted by Jan and Brian Mudd. Cost is $25 per person. Take a tour of Jan's chocolate factory.
  • "There's No People Like Show People" for 10 guests, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19, hosted by Kathy and Robert Brombacher. Cost is $60 per person. Adult sleepover set at San Diego Zoo

Ninety-Nines group plans poker run

FALLBROOK -- The Coyote Country Ninety-Nines will have its 11th annual poker run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, with Oct. 12 as a back-up date.

For the event, participants fly into six area airports -- Fallbrook, Ramona, Gillespie Field, Hemet, French Valley and Oceanside -- to pick up playing cards. Participants may start at any airport, but must finish at French Valley Airport and be checked in by 2:30 p.m. Awards are given for the best poker hands. Fifty-one people took part last year.

Cost is $3 per hand, $10 for four hands. Proceeds benefit the Coyote Country chapter's scholarship fund for students seeking continued aviation education.

Fuel is available at all airports. Helicopters and experimental aircraft are not allowed.

AAUW to host Russian visitors

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook branch of the American Association of University Women will host visitors from Russia from Sept. 20 to Sept 28. Six Russian women and two men, all educators will focus on the American educational process by visiting all levels of the educational systems in San Diego County, from preschool to university graduate programs.

The Open Worldís sponsoring agency, the Center for Russian Leadership Development at the Library of Congress, is monitoring the itinerary and joining host family communications with the two Russian facilitators accompanying the delegation. Marina Koval from the National Peace Foundation, the organization responsible for selecting Fallbrook, plans to participate in the weeklong program.

Fallbrook AAUW President Mary Dimon applied for the program and has been assisted in the arrangement for the guests by Joyce Espensen, Barbara Krzmarzick and Linda Gregg. This committee has arranged for host families from the AAUW membership to house the Russians and to plan pertinent daily visits. Other members have arranged professional visitations and excursions. Open World requires that the participants visit and experience professional activities similar to their own in Russia. In addition, they will also attend cultural events, visit renowned tourist attractions and develop close friendships with AAUW members. Correspondence with Fallbrook AAUW branch will follow the September visit.

Plans are under way for a general meeting of Fallbrook AAUW the night of Sept. 24, featuring an opportunity for all members to meet the Russian delegates. The public will be invited with details forthcoming. For information, contact Mary Dimon, 760)630-0307.

Fallbrook chamber plans luncheon series

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for a series of six Business Builder luncheons designed for business owners and professionals. Luncheon speakers will cover topics that will help members improve their sales, marketing and operations.

The luncheons will be at noon on the first Friday of each month in the chamber office board room beginning Sept. 5. Admission for chamber members will be $10 if registered before Aug. 27. Rally for Children gears up for fund-raiser

Rally for Children, a nonprofit organization supporting area programs that benefit children, is planning for its annual fund-raiser 'Casino Gala and All That Jazz' from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 4 at Vista Valley Country Club. The evening will incorporate the music of the Roaring '20s, played by Caesar Ricci and costumes of the Jazz Age.

Community partners in Fallbrook and Bonsall are providing gifts to use for the balloon raffle and auction. Another aspect of the evening will be the Casino Gala presented by Casino Del Sol Entertainment. Chips won at the gaming tables will be converted into raffle tickets for prizes.

To help defray the cost of the casino equipment, sponsorships are available as follows: Diamond, $500; Gold, $300; and Silver, $200. Acknowledgement of these contributions will be placed on casino tables for the event.

OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Police Officers' Association is hosting a golf tournament in memory of slain Oceanside police Officer Tony Zeppetella on Sept. 15 at the Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos. The event is a two-player scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The $80 entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls and a barbecue dinner, followed by an awards presentation and raffle.

Proceeds will go to Zeppetella's wife, Jamie, and son, Jakob. Donations are being accepted by individuals and businesses for prize drawings and tee sponsorships. African Violet Society to meet

Encinitas Historical Society docents sought

ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Historical Society is seeking docents to work at the 1883 Schoolhouse, at Fourth and F streets in downtown Encinitas. No experience is necessary, and training will be provided for the unpaid position.

The one-room building with a steep, pitched roof contains a library with information about the city's people, beaches, trains and bluffs. Volumes of historic photographs and oral histories as told by longtime residents also are on file.

The historical society hopes to expand its library and its ability to serve residents and students as a research facility, President Lloyd O'Connell said.

He said the 120-year-old schoolhouse is the oldest building in Encinitas. It operated as a school for first through eighth grades for 45 years.

The 1883 Schoolhouse is open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

SB chamber golf fund-raiser set

Palomar Chorale to hold auditions

SAN MARCOS -- Auditions for membership in the Palomar Chorale will be held today and Aug. 27 at Palomar College, 1140 W. Mission Road. The 70-voice master chorale will open its 2003-04 season with "Requiem" by Johannes Brahms.

Membership is open by audition to adult singers with vocal music training who read music and enjoy performing works by master composers. Auditions are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Room D-5 and 7 p.m. Aug. 27 in Room D-6 in the music complex on campus, and will include vocalization and sight singing of simple passages.

The Palomar Chorale rehearses from 7 to 9:50 p.m. Wednesdays at Palomar College. Brahms' "Requiem" will be performed in the Concert Hall at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, on Nov. 2, in conjunction with the Palomar Symphony Orchestra. The chorale's second concert is slated for Dec. 13 and 14 in the Howard Brubeck Theatre at Palomar's San Marcos campus.

Concert to feature big-band music

SAN MARCOS -- The Chris Klich Jazz Quintet will perform big-band music in a concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Wood House in Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Road.

This concert is part of the Summer Concerts in the Gardens series presented by Rotary Club of San Marcos and the city's Community Services Department.

Classes are designed to enhance babies' physical, social, intellectual, language and emotional development and will include games, songs and activities to do in class and take home.

Props such as balls, hoops and parachutes will allow children to have fun while improving their motor skills.

City offers cheerleading classes

SAN MARCOS -- The city will offer cheerleading classes for ages 4 to 15 from Sept. 3 through Oct .27 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive. The program teaches cheerleading basics, which includes dance and parade/drill routines.

Monday classes are held from 6:10 to 7 p.m. for beginners ages 5 and older and from 7 to 7:55 p.m. for intermediate students.

Wednesday classes are held at the following times: 4:10 to 4:55 p.m. (beginners ages 4 to 7); 5 to 5:50 p.m. (beginners ages 5 to 9); 5:55 to 6:45 p.m. (beginners ages 8 to 12); and 6:45 to 7:35 p.m. (beginners ages 5 to 12). Intermediate students will meet from 5:55 to 6:55 p.m.

Students must try out for intermediate classes.

Cost is $56 for junior students and $58 for senior students. Cost to attend two classes per week is $79 for juniors and $82 for seniors. Tuition can be paid at a monthly rate of $34. Poms cost $20 a pair; uniforms, $52.

A second session will run from Oct. 29 through Dec. 10.

PALOMAR MOUNTAIN -- The annual Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue & Craft Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 30 at the firehouse at the intersection of S-6 and S-7.

The event will include barbecued beef with all the fixings, live music, a craft fair, drawings for a trip for two and other prizes, homemade pies and cakes and beverages. Cost for meals is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children younger than 12.

RB Noon Rotary helps Boy Scout troop

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Rancho Bernardo Noon Rotary recently donated money to help Scott Lee of Rancho Bernardo Boy Scout Troop 680 achieve his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.

To earn the prestigious Eagle badge, Scott is building a 375-foot safety and ecological fence at the Rancho Penasquitos Park Preserve to protect wildlife and prevent accidents with horses. In addition, the natural vegetation will be allowed to grow back to its normal condition.

To help Scott raise the needed $2,000 to fund the project, the RB Noon Rotary contributed to the funds and reaffirmed its sponsorship of Troop 680.

Local resident joins MS Society

SAN DIEGO -- Carmel Mountain Ranch resident Brooke Felsburg recently joined the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, San Diego Area Chapter, as a program coordinator in the programs department.

Felsburg will be involved in coordinating programs and services that help local residents with MS and their family members and friends. About 5,000 San Diego County residents have MS, a chronic, often unpredictable and disabling neurological disease of the central nervous system.

Felsburg, a native of Cincinnati, worked for a commercial trucking firm before joining the MS Society. She has lived in San Diego since 1998 and has a background in acting and dancing. She earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from American University in Washington, D.C., and has danced in New York and modeled in print ads. She has appeared in TV commercials and a couple of TV series that were filmed in San Diego, including "Silk Stalkings."

Photos being sought for city's Web site

POWAY -- The city is requesting photos to be featured on the "My Hometown Photo Album" page of its Web site. While all photos submitted will be considered, the city is seeking images that fit the "City in the Country" theme. Do not submit material containing dangerous situations or that could be considered derogatory toward any individual or group. The city reserves the right to reject any entry.

Entries must be received no later than Aug. 30. Include your name, address, telephone number and a one-page maximum description of your photo. Submitted photos cannot be copyrighted and will not be returned.

Food distribution program available

POWAY -- Healthy Share is a nonprofit, nondenominational food distribution program committed to building healthy families by providing affordable groceries. The program encourages volunteerism in return for this benefit. It is open to everyone and has no income or age qualifications.

The prepackaged groceries are first-quality food items, not donated items or government surplus. The packages have a retail value of up to three times the cost offered.

Families can pay for their packages and pick them up at the appropriate time on the next distribution day. Checks or cash only are accepted.

Classical workshop to feature Marvin Blickenstaff

Toddler class available

Tiny Tots is a recreational preschool-type of class for children ages 3 to 4. New chapter forming in O'side

OCEANSIDE -- The Montford Point Marine Association is a nonprofit Veteran's organization established to perpetuate the legacy of the first African Americans who entered the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1949, at Montford Point Camp, New River, North Carolina. As president of the San Diego Chapter from 1995 to 1999, Oceanside resident Charles Paige Jr. would like to start an Oceanside chapter of the organization. Membership is open to veterans and active members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces regardless of race, creed or national origin. The purpose of the association is to support educational assistance programs, veterans programs and promotion of community services. The association works on improving the social condition of veterans, local families, youth and the growing population of senior citizens. Masquerade Party at RBV Adobe

'Chocolate extravaganza' to benefit Fraternity House

Jan and Brian Mudd will host a tour of Jan's chocolate factory at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 as part of a dinner series to benefit Fraternity House, Inc.
