ESCONDIDO - Elizabeth Ferrin was crowned Miss Escondido and Hannah Butler was awarded the title of Miss Teen Escondido at the 2007 pageant held Jan. 27 at the North County Church of Christ.
Sara Schrader was named first runner up and Rachelle Acker second runner up in the Miss competition. Runners up in the Miss Teen competition were Alexa Signorino, first runner up, and Rebecca Kauma, second runner up.
The outgoing queens are Stacey Melton, Miss Escondido 2006; and Lauren Paglia, Miss Teen Escondido 2006.
Relay for Life meeting planned
SAN MARCOS - A planning/organizational meeting for the American Cancer Society's 2007 San Marcos Relay For Life will be held at 6:30 tonight in Room B on the second floor of Kaiser Permanente, 400 Craven Road.
Organizers are hoping to attract volunteers for the event, which raises funds for cancer research, education and services. Relay team captains, planning committee members and corporate and individual sponsors also are needed. The 2007 San Marcos Relay for Life will take place April 14 and 15.

Parenting class series offered
FALLBROOK - The parent project, a series of parenting classes on how to change destructive adolescent behavior, will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 and run on Thursday nights through April 19 in Rooms 82, 84 and 43 on the Fallbrook Union High School campus at 2400 Stage Coach Lane. Fallbrook's top businesses and residents honored at annual dinner
FALLBROOK - Ten major awards were presented at the recent 62nd annual Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce dinner themed "Denim & Diamonds" and held at Pala Mesa Resort.
The "Citizen of the Year" is the highest recognition the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce presents. This year's honoree is the 28th to be recognized in the chamber's 61-plus year history, and was presented to Roy Ansell. The honor recognizes an individual who has shared their special talents with the community by contributing time, resources, leadership and energy toward the betterment of Fallbrook. The efforts and accomplishments are not confined to a single year. They often reflect work done over several years.
Ansell has served as a director, treasurer, vice president and/or president of a number of organizations, including the Fallbrook Youth Task Force; Rotary Club of Fallbrook, where he has 12 years of perfect attendance; American Association of Individual Investors (San Diego); Rotary Club of Fallbrook Foundation; Fallbrook Music Society; and the Investment Committee Chair of Legacy Endowment Community Foundation. The award was presented by Budd Sutliff, the 2006 president of the chamber.
The Excellence in Large Business Honoree was Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac, and was accepted by Becky Young, Fleet Director. Democratic club to host film screening
FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Democratic Club will host a screening of the film documentary "Iraq for Sale" at its meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the board room of the Fallbrook Public Utility District, 990 E. Mission Road.
The film is described as an examination of war profiteering, in which director Robert Greenwald takes viewers inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. "Iraq for Sale" is described as uncovering the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision-makers who allow them to do so. Running time is 75 minutes.

Healthcare board meetings televised
An extra television replay of Tri-City Healthcare District Board meetings will be added in three cities on the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. KOCT-TV, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications have scheduled the replay of the board meeting to expand their service to the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista. The extra replays will begin on Feb. 2 and are in addition to their regularly scheduled telecasts of the Jan. 25 board meeting.
Carlsbad residents can watch replays of the board meetings on Time Warner Cable channel 3 on the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. and the following Friday of the month at 10 a.m.

Docents sought for Blue Sky Reserve
POWAY - The city is looking for naturalists to join an active group of wildlife enthusiasts at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve.
Docent naturalists work with the public, schools and Scout groups to promote a greater understanding of natural resources. They also perform tasks such as leading nature walks, restoring damaged habitat, minor trail maintenance, assisting at interpretive programs, foot patrols or maintaining kiosk displays.
An eight-week training course is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Feb. 28 at Lake Poway, followed by field visits to the reserve from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday mornings (no training during Easter week).

Workshop on future San Marcos park set

Grand reopening of dining room on tap
SAN MARCOS - The San Marcos Senior Center, 111 W. Richmar Ave., will hold a grand reopening of its lunchroom at 10:45 a.m. Feb. 1. The new dining room has been named "The Discovery Cafe" in honor of San Marcos being known as the Valley of Discovery.
Local artist Pete Manuri donated his time and talent to paint a mural on the dining room wall. He will be on hand to talk to attendees about his artwork.

Chinese New Year Cultural Fair on tap
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Chinese Center will welcome the Year of the Boar with the 25th annual Chinese New Year Cultural Fair on Feb. 24 and 25 in downtown San Diego's Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District, Third Avenue at J Street.
An estimated 25,000 attendees will experience the Chinese New Year with traditional Chinese performances, arts and crafts and authentic food. Admission is free. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 24 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 25.
