Veterans group plans barbecue

WINCHESTER ---- The Southern California Eagles Chapter of the 101st Airborne Division Association will host a barbecue at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pines Air Park in Winchester.

The chapter is urging all present and former division members to attend. World War II veterans are encouraged to attend as the group's guests.

The cost is $5 to $7, but WWII veterans will be admitted free.

Sierra Club plans wine-tasting event

WARNER SPRINGS ---- The Santa Margarita Group of the Sierra Club is selling advance tickets to a "Sierra Sunday" fundraiser Sunday at Shadow Mountain Winery.

Club supporters are invited to enjoy a leisurely afternoon at a rustic winery and vineyard on Sunshine Summit, along the historic Butterfield Stage route. Participants will be supporting local environmental issues as they sample wines and appetizers while listening to live flamenco guitar and strolling through the vineyards.

Cost is $25 for the event, which will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Advance reservations and payment are required. It is not necessary to be a Sierra Club member.

Class on family journaling planned

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A free class on family journaling will be offered Monday at the Lake Elsinore Senior Center.

Janet Meservy from Sensible Senior Home Care will teach participants how to get started so they can share their life's experiences with their loves ones.

Organizers say journaling is a way to record a family's history and personal stories that can be shared with members of future generations.

All adults are welcome at the free class that starts at 12:15 p.m. at the center, 420 E. Lakeshore Drive. For information, call 951-674-2526.


Rotary offers safety program for kids

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club is sponsoring a second week of Safety Town for young children at Helen Hunt Jackson Elementary School.

A morning session will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and an afternoon session will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Safety Town is an interactive program designed to introduce and teach children ages 5 to 8 various aspects of safety. The curriculum focuses on lessons about safety, including poison and drug prevention; calling 911; animal and gun safety and disaster preparedness.

Museum offers kids camp for youths

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Museum continues to offer summer camp sessions for kids for the next two weeks.

The Summer Explorers Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays and is designed to explore the history of the valley and allow children to experience the cultural traditions of the region.

The camp, geared toward children 8 to 10, will feature hands-on learning, field trips and a variety of craft projects. The cost is $65 per week. Campers should bring lunch, snacks and bottled water each day.

Mall to offer free family films

TEMECULA ---- The Promenade is offering a free Family Film Festival at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Edwards Cinema.

The theater will show two different movies each week. Seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Next week's selections are "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." And from Aug. 3 through 5, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "Monsters vs. Aliens" will be screened.

City offers hip-hop dance class

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The city of Lake Elsinore is offering a hip-hop class from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Thursdays at Lake Community Center.

The classes, which cost $25 for four weeks, are designed for children ages 10 to 14 and will teach the latest steps of the hip-hop movement.

Scholarship set for teen hospice volunteers

MURRIETA ---- Hospice of the Valleys recently announced a new scholarship program for hospice teen volunteers.

The $1,000 scholarship will be open to all teen volunteers who have completed 50 hours of service between May 1, 2010, and April 30, 2011. An essay also is required.

Volleyball players sought in Menifee

MENIFEE ---- Organizers of a new volleyball league are trying to get people pumped up about the coed volleyball games that are being offered this summer.

The games will run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and there is a Tuesday night session from 6 to 9 p.m.

MSJC seeks donated vehicles

Mt. San Jacinto College's automotive technology department is looking for donated vehicles that can be worked on by students.

The vehicles should be less than 10 years old and in running condition. All donations will be filtered through the college foundation so they are tax deductible.

Seniors club invites new members

TEMECULA ---- Seniors' Golden Years, an active charitable and social club in Southwest County, invites member to join them.

The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St. Activities include bingo, socials, potlucks and trips.

Singles group plans social event

TEMECULA ----The Half Century Singles will host a meet-and-greet dinner on Thursday.

The event will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Olive Garden, 29025 Overland Drive in Temecula. Participants will buy their own food and drinks. The cost is $6 with a reservation and the attire is California dressy.

Half Century Singles is a dining club with social introductions for single men and women 50 and older.

Singles group seeks new faces

TEMECULA ---- The Best Years Senior Singles Club is looking for a few good men and some nice ladies.

The club was started about 20 years ago and is for singles age 55 and older who live in Southwest County.

The group focuses on friendship and socializing and members meet weekly for dinner at area restaurants. Other activities include card and domino games, trips to see stage performances and trips to Laughlin and the Palm Springs Follies.

Michelle's Place hosts group

MURRIETA ----- A self-help group for women dealing with breast cancer meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at Michelle's Place.

Survivors, those newly diagnosed and women undergoing treatment can share feelings, learn methods of coping and get resources.

Center to screen for sun-damaged skin

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A facial skin screening will be offered to adults Wednesday at the Lake Elsinore Senior Center.

Representatives from Prime Care of Sun City will conduct the screening, which will show the damage the sun has caused to your skin, screen for early signs of skin cancer and provide information on how you can protect your skin from further damage.

All adults are invited to the screening, which starts at 12:15 p.m. at the center, 420 E. Lakeshore Drive. For information, call 951-674-2526.
