RANCHO PENASQUITOS - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will host Westview High School's "Music is Magic" fundraiser March 31 aboard the USS Midway.
The event will feature dinner, music, dancing, a drawing, and silent and live auctions to raise money for the school's instrumental music program. Now five years old, the program has been supported mainly through donations from students and parents. In order to grow, the program needs to boost its inventory of written music, coaching, instruments and equipment. Rivers will speak on the importance of supporting music programs in schools.
Auction items include a stay at the Westin Inn in Horton Plaza and a week in hundreds of resorts around the world, as well as gift baskets. One raffle winner will receive $5,000 cash. Raffle tickets cost $25 and five for $100, and no more than 500 will be sold. Winner does not have to be present to win.

Youth In Court Day set for March 9
VISTA - The Superior Court of Vista will once again open its doors to hundreds of North County students for the Youth In Court Day on March 9 at the Vista Courthouse, 325 S. Melrose Ave.
The judges and staff of the Superior Court will join with the North County Bar Association to show more than 1,000 students how the justice system works and expose them to job opportunities in law and law enforcement.
The day-long event will include mock trials for elementary and middle school students and educational sessions for high school students on diverse topics such as domestic violence, death penalty trials, use of forensic evidence and the devastating impact of gang violence.
The mock trials will start at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The educational sessions begin at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m.

Don Diego Scholarships offered
NORTH COUNTY - The Don Diego Fund will award five scholarships to local high school seniors who have been involved in the San Diego County Fair.
One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 4-H member, one $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to an FFA member, one $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has been an employee of the Del Mar Fairgrounds or the San Diego County Fair and two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students who have been exhibitors in activities and events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Applications are being accepted now through April 2 and are available on the fairground's Web site at http://www.sdfair.com.
The Don Diego Fund provides financial support for deserving San Diego County college-bound students. The fund was formed in 1986 as a lasting tribute to Tom Hernandez, who, in the role of Don Diego, was the legendary host of the San Diego County Fair from 1947 until his death in 1984. In his memory, the Don Diego Fund was created to provide college scholarships for outstanding San Diego County high school students who have participated in the annual San Diego County Fair or other events associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have participated in the San Diego County Fair or other events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds before this year and anticipate graduating no later than June. Applications for the scholarships provided by the Don Diego Fund must be accompanied by a certified copy of high school transcripts and postmarked on or before April 2.
Don Diego Scholarship winners also must demonstrate talent for organization, leadership, innovation, and have made a valuable contribution to the community through participation in the fair, their school and extracurricular activities. Scholarships are not awarded on financial need alone. The scholarships may be used at a two- or four-year college or university.

St. Francis Preschool plans Open House
VISTA -St. Francis Preschool will host an Open House for parents at 8:30 a.m. March 6 on campus, part of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish School, 525 W. Vista Way.

Invisible Children benefit set
OCEANSIDE - The Rancho Christian Fellowship and Invisible Children clubs at Rancho Buena Vista High School will hold a fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. March 2 at Chick-Fil-A, 3475 Marron Road.
The outdoor event will feature the screening of the film "Invisible Children" and speakers who will address the campaign to halt the war in northern Uganda. Admission is $5 at the door. Attendees should bring lawn chairs. A drawing with gift certificates and other prizes will be held.
Proceeds will go to the Invisible Children Club at RBV and will be used to fund its participation in a nationwide competition to send money to schools in northern Uganda. The winning school will take a trip to the country this summer.

City offers King scholarships
OCEANSIDE - For the 14th year, the city of Oceanside, through its Community Service Commission, will sponsor the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships, awarded to graduating high school seniors for their first year of college.
Applicants must be seniors living in Oceanside or attending Oceanside schools. More than $300,000 has been set aside for the scholarships since their inception, all from community donations. Scholarships can be used at community and four-year colleges.
In addition to academic achievement and written faculty recommendations, scholarship winners should reflect King's legacy of service, integrity and commitment to excellence throughout their lives. As part of their application, candidates will be asked to write a brief essay describing how King's life has affected their own.
Completed applications are due by April 13. Winners will be notified no later than May. More information and applications are available at high school counseling offices.
EEF fundraiser to be held
ENCINITAS - The Encinitas Educational Foundation at Ocean Knoll Elementary School will host Night at the Races, an auction fundraiser to establish a mobile science and computer lab to be used to accelerate instruction at Ocean Knoll.
The group's goal is to raise $25,000. The community is invited to help make the goal a reality by donating items including gift certificates, tickets, group event packages and merchandise for the auction or by sponsoring the event for $250. LCCHS Parent Information Night planned

Local residents earn college honors
NORTH COUNTY - Several local residents recently earned academic honors at their respective colleges. Rachel Krause, a 2005 graduate of Carlsbad High School and daughter of Charles and Karen Krause of Carlsbad, was named to the fall 2006 dean's list at Grove City College in Pennsylvania for earning 3.4 to 3.59 grade point average. Timothy Hemker of Carlsbad and Rachel Savage of Encinitas were named to the 2006 autumn quarter dean's list at Seattle Pacific University for attaining at least a 3.50 grade point average.
Ag scholarships available
FALLBROOK - Any graduating senior or college student residing in the Fallbrook Union High School District and pursuing a degree in horticultural or agricultural related fields of study is eligible to apply for a 2006-07 award offered by the Fallbrook Garden Club.

National Charity League chapter offers scholarships
FALLBROOK - The San Luis Rey chapter of the National Charity League is offering $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Fallbrook High School senior girls. Awards are based on GPA and school and community activities. Also taken into consideration are community service work, financial need, personal recommendation, essay and interview with the scholarship committee. One of the scholarships will be the Ann Daniel Memorial Scholarship, which goes to the girl whose commitment to community service surpasses the other applicants.
National Charity League is a nonprofit corporation composed of Patroness and Ticktocker groups, organized to initiate and encourage charitable endeavors and to foster the mother-daughter relationship in philanthropic, cultural and leadership development. Funds for the scholarships are raised through various events throughout the year. Kindergarten registration begins at Bonsall elementary
BONSALL - Kindergarten registration begins at Bonsall Elementary School on March 1. Children must be age 5 before December 1 to enroll. Old ink cartridges sought
FALLBROOK -Kopa Literary Magazine is a club that meets weekly at Fallbrook High School. Each year the club produces a publication comprised of student art, poetry and short stories. SPHS grad trains for mission
Melinda Snapp of Escondido, daughter of Warren and Kathleen Snapp, recently entered the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, where she is studying Spanish for two months. She will go on to serve a mission in Tucson, Ariz. for 18 months. A graduate of San Pasqual High School, she completed a two-year dental assisting program at Palomar College and attended Brigham Young University-Idaho as a floral design major. She is the fifth of the Snapp's six children to serve a mission.

Vallecitos scholarships offered
SAN MARCOS - The Vallecitos Water District, in collaboration with the San Diego chapter of the California Special Districts Association, invites all local high school seniors to participate in its scholarship program to win one of five regional $1,000 grants to apply toward college.
The program, designed to expand special district awareness, requires all participants to draft an essay that best describes special districts and their role in local government.
Applicants are encouraged to research the topic through internet and library research, attending a special district board meeting or interviewing special district employees or officials. Criteria includes community involvement or volunteer service, letters of recommendation and a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
Applications are available at high school counseling offices. Packets are due by 5 p.m. March 9 at the Vallecitos Water District office, 201 Vallecitos de Oro, San Marcos. All entries turned in to the district will be viewed by the Vallecitos Board of Directors, with the winners being forwarded to the association for an opportunity to compete in the regional competition. San Elijo fundraiser set
SAN MARCOS - San Elijo Elementary School will host a spring fundraiser, Mardi Gras Madness and Casino Night, from 5:30 to 11 p.m. March 10 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club.
The event will feature a jazz band, disc jockey, casino tables, and silent and live auctions. The school is partnering with Live Oak Elementary School in Orleans Parish, La. The kindergarten through eighth-grade school is in New Orleans' Hurricane Katrina recovery district and has more than 400 students. The campus was devastated during the hurricane and is still struggling to recover. Ten percent of proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the school to help with rebuilding efforts. In the spirit of giving, San Elijo students will soon exchange e-mails and collect art, music and other supplies for students at Live Oak.
Tickets for the fundraiser cost $60. Admission includes a welcome reception, entrance to the silent auction, dinner, dessert, coffee, live auction participation, dancing and $100 in casino money. A no-host bar will be available as well as the opportunity to participate in a raffle. Most of the proceeds will support technology, music and art programs at San Elijo Elementary.
