Oceanside public library receives grant

OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Library received a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts recently to host "The Big Read," which promotes community-based reading programs through activities such as read-a-thons, book discussions, lectures, movie screenings, and performing arts events. Planned partners include the Oceanside Museum of Art, Oceanside Historical Society, Camp Pendleton libraries, Veterans Association of North County, Barnes & Noble and a group of local published military authors. Activities will take place in April and May 2010. Additional support for The Big Read will be provided by the Friends of the Oceanside Library and the Oceanside Public Library Foundation. Sober Riders donate to Boys & Girls Club

Jewish camp group offers activities

OCEANSIDE -- Camp Gan Israel has spots available in its Jewish day camps from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through July 17 at Empresa Elementary School, 4850 Avenida Empresa. The camp for 4- through 10-year-olds weaves Jewish themes through stories, songs, games, contests, and creative activities. Also features swimming, sports, field trips and a Shabbat party.
