Vista holds leadership academy
VISTA - The city of Vista will host its first Citizens' Leadership Academy starting this September. The free program is designed to give citizens an insider's view of their local government and to build a stronger relationship between the city and the community.
The program will run for eight weeks starting Sept. 20 to Nov. 8, on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., with the exception of one lunchtime meeting on Sept. 27. The first class will be held at Vista City Hall, 600 Eucalyptus Ave., with subsequent classes at various locations like Wildwood Community Center, the Vista Library, Vista Fire Station No. 1 and the county jail in Vista.
The academy's curriculum will discuss important issues like public safety, development, traffic, growth and finances. RANCHO PENASQUITOS - The Rancho Family YMCA's coed fall basketball and soccer leagues for kindergartners through fifth-graders will run from Sept. 8 through Oct 20.
Basketball games will be played at Sundance and Deer Canyon elementary schools and soccer games will be played at the YMCA's new Scripps Poway Parkway location. The one-hour games will be played on Saturdays, preceded by a 45-minute practice.

Healthy cooking classes offered
POWAY - Donna Wolf, a registered dietitian and gourmet cook, teaches simple, healthy cooking classes for all ages and skill levels. Participants can learn how to create meals without the excesses of sugar, salt and fat and utilizing healthy ingredients and fresh herbs and spices. Organic ingredients also are used.
All classes are held in a gourmet kitchen at a residence in Poway unless otherwise noted.

Discover San Marcos hike planned
SAN MARCOS - The city's Community Services Department will offer the first in a series of fall Discover San Marcos hikes from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 1.
Participants can hike or bike the new road and trail access at South Twin Oaks Valley Road before the road officially opens. The moderately difficult route is approximately four miles in length and includes a 500-foot elevation change.
Park along Twin Oaks Valley Road near the Village Drive intersection. Reservations are not required; sign-in at the meeting location.

Sheriff's station seeks senior volunteers
SAN MARCOS - The San Marcos Sheriff's Station is seeking new members for its Senior Volunteer Patrol Program. As the "eyes and ears" of the Sheriff's Department, Senior Volunteer Patrol members cover all of San Marcos and unincorporated areas of north and south San Diego County.
Duties include checking on the homes of residents who are on vacation; visiting home-bound individuals through the You Are Not Alone (YANA) program; patrolling parking areas for handicapped parking violations; reporting abandoned vehicles, graffiti and suspicious activities; and performing office duties. Volunteers must be available for a minimum of six hours per week.
Applicants must be age 50 or older, have a valid driver's license, undergo a background check and have their physician's approval. Candidates then participate in a 72-hour training academy.

Exercise, swim lessons offered at warm-water pool

Nature hike set at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO - Naturalist and biologist Carol Stanford will lead a moderately-strenuous, four-mile hike and talk about plants and animals at 3 p.m. Aug. 26 at Daley Ranch. OGHS Alumni Barbecue set for Sept. 21
ESCONDIDO - The first Orange Glen High School Alumni Barbecue will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in the high school gymnasium, 1600 Glenridge Road. Speakers will include alumna and Escondido Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler, as well as OGHS Principal Diego Ochoa and others.

Jewish foundation transforms culture of giving
SAN DIEGO - The Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego recently graduated the first class in its Endowment Leadership Institute. Three years after ELI launched with the goal of transforming the culture of legacy giving in San Diego, almost 500 families have stepped forward to promise an estimated $120 million for the community.
Inaugurated in April 2004, ELI is a program in which the Foundation partners with agency, synagogue and day school lay and professional leadership to establish bequests and other estate gifts. These bequests will build future endowments for the Jewish community.
ELI's first class included the Agency for Jewish Education, Congregation Adat Yeshurun, Congregation Beth Israel, Hillel of San Diego, Jewish Family Service, Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center-Jacobs Family Campus, San Diego Jewish Academy, Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School, Temple Adat Shalom, Temple Solel, Tifereth Israel Synagogue and United Jewish Federation of San Diego County.
The second and current class includes Beth Jacob Congregation, Chabad of University City, Congregation Beth Am, Congregation Beth El, Congregation Dor Hadash, Ohr Shalom Synagogue, Ner Tamid Synagogue and Temple Emanu-El.
