Theater group to hold auditions
VALLEY CENTER -- Valley Center Community Theater will hold auditions for "Mr. Scrooge's Christmas (A Christmas Carol)" from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Valley Center Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road. 'Lil Abner' onstage at Kit Carson Park

'Sleepy Hollow' to open Oct. 3
VISTA -- Encore Youth Theatre, the youth outreach of Moonlight Cultural Foundation, will present "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a musical adaptation of Washington Irving's classic ghost story.
The play, written by Carlsbad playwright Heather Megill, tells the story of timid teacher Icabod Crane, his love for the beautiful Katrina VanTassel, and the legend of the "Headless Horseman" of Sleepy Hollow.

Entries sought for T-shirt art contest
OCEANSIDE -- Entries are being sought for a T-shirt art contest for the third annual Oceanside Turkey Trot. The first-place winner will receive $400 and have their art placed on the 4,000 participant T-shirts and on the Oceanside Turkey Trot Web site. Second- and third-place winners will receive $200 and $100, respectively.
The Oceanside Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving Day 5K race benefiting the Move Your Feet Before You Eat! Foundation and the Oceanside Unified School District. Five dollars from each registration fee goes directly to the Oceanside school of the participant's choice.

SD Flute Guild to hold competition

Theater classes offered for kids
POWAY -- The city and Winspear Creative will offer theater classes for kids Thursdays, Oct. 2-Dec. 11, in Templars Hall at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
Children ages 4 to 6 can sing and swing in "Broadway Babies" as they learn fun new songs. Class times are 3-3:45 p.m. In "Vocal Motion," children ages 7-12 will be introduced to basic musicianship skills through song. Class times are 4-5:30 p.m. Participants will perform at the "Christmas in the Park" festival.

'Art Safari' class to begin Oct. 6
POWAY -- Artist Susan Bainbridge will teach an "Art Start: Art Safari" class for youths ages 7 to 12 from 3:45-5 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 6-Nov. 10, in the Great Room at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
Participants can create art based on the exotic animals, designs and landscapes of Africa using a variety of media.

CHS dancers offer classes for kids
CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers will offer weekly dance classes for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. One-hour classes will be held Oct. 1-Dec. 9 at Carlsbad High School. 'Art Expressions' classes offered
FALLBROOK -- Marilee Ragland will teach "Art Expressions" classes this fall at the Fallbrook School of the Arts, 310 East Alvarado St.
Students will participate in a variety of projects using paints, pastels, paper mache, collage and mixed media. Some of the artwork will be displayed in the children's room of the Fallbrook Public Library in December.
Classes for ages 8 to 12 will meet from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 7-Nov. 4; ages 5-8 will meet from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 6.

Christmas theater workshop offered
SAN MARCOS -- Theatre West and Premiere Productions for Kids is registering youths ages 7 to 18 for its upcoming theater workshop, "A Small Town Christmas." No audition required.
The workshop will provide a hands-on experience where acting, singing and theater dance are introduced. Every child enrolled will receive at least one line or solo as a cast member in the show.
The workshop will be from 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Oct. 18-Nov. 22. Rehearsals will take place from 4-6 p.m. Dec. 1-3. Performances will be Dec. 4-7 at the San Marcos Community Center.
