Food to make July 4 celebration festive

FALLBROOK - The Grand Tradition 4th of July event, sponsored by the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance, will showcase a variety of foods, some old favorites and some new. Local organizations and businesses are working with the F.B.A.

The Kiwanis club will be handling hot dogs and hamburgers. Part of the money raised will support the youth programs funded by Kiwanis, according to President Cathy Kerley.

"The hamburgers will be from Major Market and will be good quality and a nice size," said Kerley, "including lettuce, tomato and onion." Hot dogs will be Ball Park frankfurters with mustard, ketchup, relish and onions. The hot dogs and hamburgers will be an alternative for those not wanting a full meal and wishing to use their tickets at other booths. The Kiwanis have invited students from the Key Club at the high school and the Builder's Club from Potter Junior High to help that day.

Fallbrook Beautification Alliance members are serving the chicken dinner special provided by Major Market. The dinner includes a baked chicken breast with baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad and roll.

The Soroptimists will be serving Sourdough Pizza this year, offering either pepperoni or cheese toppings.

"We jumped at the opportunity to be part of this event," said Donna Clark, first vice president of the Soroptimists.

Clark said this will be the first time she has attended the Fallbrook's 4th of July celebration after others raved about last year's event. The Soroptimists provide scholarships for high school girls and also sponsors the annual Miss Fallbrook Pageant. Sourdough pizza owners John and Ruthie Harris will provide their delivery truck on site to keep the pizzas hot.

Rally for Children will once again offer apple pies and chocolate chip cookies. "Rally" provides the annual enrichment day for all children, Arts in the Park, and provides funding for many youth programs in the community.

Fire Safe Council will have the popular snow cones and cotton candy; and Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green will supply soft drinks and popcorn.

There also will be beer, wine, water and free coffee.

The adult entrance fee of $25 ($30 at door) will include admission and 10 food/beverage tickets. Children's fee of $10 will include admission and five food/beverage tickets. The tickets may be used at any booth for whatever people enjoy.

Profits made from the sale of food and beverages enables the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance to sustain and maintain local projects and keep Fallbrook beautiful, therefore, no outside food can be brought in, except baby food. Anyone arriving with a cooler will be asked to return it to their car. Parking is $5 on the Grand Tradition lot with free off-site parking off Peppertree Lane. Tickets may be purchased online at www.fallbrookbeautification.org.

Operation Homefront seeks backpack donations

Operation Homefront, with support from the community, would like to ensure that 2,500 military children are prepared for the 2007-08 school year. The nonprofit organization is collecting school supplies to fill backpacks of deserving kids. Items needed include spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, notebook paper, notebooks, rulers, colored pencils, calculators, erasers and anything else to get a child ready for a new school year.

Monetary donations of $25 will purchase a backpack and all the trimmings for one military child and can be mailed to Operation Homefront, P.O. Box 26747, San Diego, CA 92196. Write "Back to School" in the memo line of the check.

School supplies can be dropped off at any San Diego County Saturn dealership. Call Tricia De La Paz at (858) 695-6810 or e-mail tricia@operationhomefront.net.
