FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Historical Society has elected new officers for the 2006-07 year. They are: Jack Story, president; Lee Schaeffer, vice president; Judy Gillespie, treasurer; Sandra Baxter, recording secretary; and Jane McKee, corresponding secretary.
The society's annual "Old Timers' Picnic" takes place beginning at 11 a.m. June 25 at the museum at 260 Rockycrest Road.
No reservations are required, and it is not necessary to be a longtime resident or society member to attend. Just bring a favorite dish to share. Admission is free. The museum and Pittenger House will be open to offer a glimpse of life in the early days of Fallbrook including vintage cars, farm implements, firefighting equipment, home and school exhibits and "Fallbrook in Miniature," complete with working model railroad.
In addition, there will be vintage books and magazines available for sale and an opportunity drawing.
Legacy Endowment to host seminar
FALLBROOK -- Legacy Endowment will host a seminar on the benefits of "New Opportunities for Gifts of Real Estate" from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 28 at the Grand Tradition, 1602 S. Mission Road.

Printmaking group has exhibit
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego & North County Printmakers members will exhibit their recent prints June 30 through Sept. 4 at the Lyceum Theatre, 79 Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. The exhibit is titled "Printmaking & Beyond IV" and provides a look at contemporary fine art printmaking.

Library summer reading program under way
VALLEY CENTER -- The Valley Center branch of the San Diego County Library is offering "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales," its summer reading program for children, through Aug. 10 at the library, 29200 Cole Grade Road. Art show to benefit teacher fighting cancer
LEUCADIA -- Bekah Price, a teacher and single mother of two girls, is fighting advanced mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Staff members and families of A Children's Garden, the North County preschool where Price taught and her youngest daughter attends, are uniting to raise funds for her expenses and special experiences with her daughters. Each June, A Children's Garden holds a combination art show and graduation ceremony for students from the school's Leucadia and Olivenhain locations. San Marcos youth earns Congressional Award Gold Medal
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Daniel Parker of San Marcos received The Congressional Award Gold Medal, Congress' highest honor for youth service, at a June 21 ceremony in Washington, D.C. Members of Congress, including Senate and House Leadership, presented Daniel, along with 242 other young awardees, with Gold Medals in ceremonies held on Capitol Hill.
In earning the prestigious medal, Daniel completed more than 400 hours of Voluntary Public Service by building three portable planter boxes for disabled youths at a Vista school, where the students could plant flowers and vegetables.
The Congressional Award Foundation encourages participants to be well-rounded by setting goals in personal development, physical fitness and cultural exploration. Daniel wanted to earn the Civil Air Patrol rank of sergeant for his Personal Development goal, which he accomplished by taking leadership courses and being on the Color Guard. For his Physical Fitness goal, Daniel aimed to shorten his running time, which he accomplished by running multiple times throughout the week and by learning karate. For his Expedition, Daniel took part in a trek to Philmont, where he backpacked for 10 days.
Archaeologist to discuss diet of early Texans
RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- The San Diego Archaeological Society will present "Putting Dinner on the Table in the Texas Archaic," a free lecture by New Mexico State archaeologist Glenna Dean, Ph.D., at 8 p.m. June 24 at the Los Penasquitos Ranch Adobe.
Dean will discuss her analysis of desiccated human feces (coprolites) from archaic southwest Texas. This study of what is possibly the earliest organized latrine in the United States provided important data about the ethnobotany and cultural ecology of prehistoric southwest Texans.

Scottish Highland Games upcoming
VISTA -- The 33nd annual San Diego Scottish Highland Games & Gathering of the Clans will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 24 and 25 in Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Drive. Puppy Love Party at Belly Up
SOLANA BEACH -- The North County Humane Society & SPCA will team up with the Belly Up Tavern to host another Puppy Love Party from 8 to 10 p.m. June 28 at the Belly Up, 143 S. Cedros Ave.
The Puppy Love Party is a mix-and-mingle for local professionals and singles to help raise funds to support the local animal shelter. It will feature the popular Hunks for Hounds bachelor auction and Hotties for Hounds bachelorette auction. Guys and gals ranging in age from 20s to 40s will be auctioned off to raise money for the 6,000 lost and unwanted animals that come through the doors of the NCHS each year. All proceeds will go directly to the care of the homeless animals.
The event will feature food, entertainment and a silent auction. New to the event will be the "Hair of the Dog" after-hours party, including a live band starting at 10 p.m. The party is free to those who attend the Puppy Love Party. All others are admitted with a $10 donation.
Tickets for the Puppy Love Party are $30 thereafter at the door. VIP tickets are $75 and include early admission to fraternize with the bachelors and bachelorettes from 7 to 8 p.m., all-access seating at the event with a personal auction bidder, unlimited appetizers and drinks during the pre-party.

Chat with the Cat in the Hat
VISTA -- Moonlight Angels Auxiliary will host a lunch and a "Chat with the Cat in the Hat" at 11:30 a.m. July 8 at the Moonlight Amphitheatre Patio, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. This whimsical occasion celebrates the opening show of Moonlight Stage Productions summer season, "Seussical the Musical," which runs from June 28 to July 9. Guests will meet actors from the production and have the special opportunity to take a behind-the-curtain tour of the set. Other activities include various crafts and a hat-making contest.

Civil War re-enactment upcoming
VISTA -- The fifth annual Civil War Re-Enactment will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 8 and 9 at the Antique Gas & Steam Museum, 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave.
The event will recreate the era of the American Civil War, featuring live battle scenes, complete with a battery of authentic period cannons. There will be tours of the museum's extensive collection of antique equipment and grounds, period music, Civil War arts and crafts vendors and an assortment of food and drink.
Battles will take place at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Artillery and field demonstrations will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days.

Mission Marketplace sponsors essay contest

Junior Seau is Grand Marshal of parade
OCEANSIDE -- NFL All Pro linebacker Junior Seau will be the Grand Marshall for the 13th Annual Freedom Days Parade in downtown Oceanside. A native of Oceanside, Seau attended Oceanside High School and the University of Southern California prior to being drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1990. Number 55 was a fan favorite, playing 13 years with the San Diego Chargers and three years with the Miami Dolphins. In 2002 he was voted to a record 12th consecutive Pro Bowl appearance.
The theme of this year's parade is "Proud to Be an American." The weekend celebration starts at 5 p.m. June 30 with a carnival located at the corner of Mission Avenue and Myers Street. The carnival will be underway from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 1, 2 and 3; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 4.
The parade festivities kick off at 10 a.m. July 1 at Wisconsin Avenue on South Coast Highway moving north to Civic Center Drive. Music will be provided by four marching bands, floats, walking parties and more.
The O'Fest Street Fair will offer crafts, international food, retail and information booths. The street fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 3; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 4. O'Fest will continue throughout July 4 until sunset when the holiday comes to a grand close with a fireworks display. This year, KYXY will provide a music simulcast to accompany the fireworks.

Masons participate in parade
OCEANSIDE -- Surfside Lodge No. 112 F&AM Prince Hall Affiliated, will participate in the Freedom Days Parade July 1 under the supervision of Worshipful Master Ernest Pierce Jr., Senior Warden Floyd Gaskins and Junior Warden Curtis Dydell.
Dress for this occasion is black suit, black tie, black shoes, white shirt, gloves and aprons.
