Health and wellness weekend

CARLSBAD -- The city of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation department will present its Health and Wellness Weekend on July 11 and 12. The Community Health and Fitness Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11 in the southwest parking lot of Westfield Plaza Camino Real. The event will feature a Fitness Activity Circuit, a variety of physical activities, demonstrations, products and informational booths. The 28th annual Carlsbad Triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. July 12 at Tamarack Beach with a 1K swim, followed by a 25K bike course and 5K run along the beaches, lagoon and wildlife preserve. AARP course offered to seniors

VISTA -- The McClellan Senior Center will hold a four-hour AARP Driver Safety class from 1 to 5 p.m. July 28 at the center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The refresher class is available to all who have completed the regular eight-hour class in the past 48 months (since August 2005). The cost is $12 for AARP members, $14 for nonmembers. Guest speaker for Alzheimer's group

VISTA -- The Vista Alzheimer's Caregivers Group, sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association, will play host to guest speaker Dr. Dan Sewell of the UCSD Senior Behavioral Health Program from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 16 at 1080 Arcadia Ave. Meetings are free. Guest speaker at Jewish seniors club

Fifth-grade essay winners announced

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Kiwanis Club held its annual fifth-grade essay contest June 11. The topic: "What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up." Winners received $50, and honorable mention students received $20. Library launches career center

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Public Library, in partnership with the nonprofit San Diego Workforce Partnership/North Inland Career Center, launched the Escondido Library Career Center on July 1. The career center, at 247 S. Kalmia St., will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. Workshops include resume writing and critique, mock interviews, networking, introduction to the personal computer and introduction to job search on the Internet. Ceramics for kids

Pet adoption to be held

Athletic club to meet

ESCONDIDO -- The Cougar Athletic Club will hold its quarterly breakfast meeting at 8:30 a.m. July 11 at Cocina del Charro, 525 N. Quince St. Speaker Mike Frank will discuss his high school, college and major league baseball career. Free support group for children offered

ESCONDIDO -- The Elizabeth Hospice Center for Compassionate Care will hold "Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery," a support group for children and teenagers, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 22 at 930 Canterbury Place. The group's goal is to help families thrive, find positive ways to share emotions and adjust to changes in family life when a parent has cancer. Free concert to be held at Lake Poway

Digital scrapbooking class to be held

SAN MARCOS -- The San Marcos Senior Center will hold a digital scrapbooking class at 10 a.m. July 13 at the center, 111 W. Richmar Ave. Come and see how easily photos can be scanned, and once scanned, how they can be organized on your computer and then be used to create a spectacular Digital Photo Book.
