North San Diego County Community News Briefs: Golfers still welcome for tournament

BONSALL - Golfers are still welcome for the third annual golf tournament sponsored by the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce scheduled for May 11 at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a 1 p.m. tee-off time for men and women. The $95-per-player entry fee includes a pre-tournament four-hole putting contest with three winners, the 18-hole round, golf cart, and green fees, golfers goody bag, three tickets for refreshments during play, and contests during play including the chance to win a new car or cash.

There also will be a post-tournament dinner with an entree choice of roasted prime rib or chicken Marsala with wine, plus side dishes and assorted desserts, and no-host bar. There will be door prizes for golfers and a cash prize for the winning team.

Proceeds from the event benefit chamber events such as the annual sheriff's appreciation day, Bonsall and Fallbrook student of the month programs, Bonsall Country Festival/Business Expo and other community activities.

Reche club plans spaghetti dinner

FALLBROOK - The Reche Community Club will have its first-ever spaghetti dinner May 19 at the clubhouse, which was the community's first school. Originally called "Fall-Brook School," the one-room schoolhouse was built in 1886 and is located at 1319 Live Oak Park Road.

Besides spaghetti, the menu for the dinner includes homemade sauce, meatballs, salad, garlic bread and ice cream or sherbet for dessert. Drink selections include coffee or punch. Sodas may be purchased separately. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children younger than 12. Openings still available for historical society luncheon

FALLBROOK - Reservations can still be made for the Fallbrook Historical Society's annual luncheon at 11 a.m. May 11 at the Grand Tradition. Knitting group to meet

FALLBROOK - The local knitting group, the Knit Wits, will meet at 10 a.m. May 9 at the Fallbrook Senior Center at 399 Heald Lane. Angel Society awards grants

FALLBROOK - The Board of Directors for Fallbrook's Angel Society met recently and awarded funds totaling $15,500 to these nonprofit organizations:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of North County, to support their five Core Programs. (Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, The Arts, Health and Life Skills, and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.)
  • Fallbrook People to People, to help with operating expenses associated with finding and placing workers to fill the needs of residents of our community.
  • Sullivan Middle School, to provide funds toward their annual trip to Washington D.C. Forty-eight students will participate in this year's trip.
  • Student of the Month Program, to help fund the monthly awards breakfast at Fallbrook Golf Club.
  • Bonsall Fallbrook Little League, to provide funds to support development of another playing area, work on improving grass, and correcting drainage problems.

The Fallbrook Angel Society uses proceeds from the Angel Thrift Shop, member dues, and other donations to fund requests for worthy community projects.

All of the merchandise sold in the Angel Shop comes from community donations. The Angel Shop is open for business from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is located at 1002 S. Main Street.

Women Marines to meet

OCEANSIDE - The next meeting of the Edith Macias Vann Southern California Chapter of the Women Marines Association will be at 11:15 a.m. May 12 at Grandma's Hilltop Cafe in the Oceana Shopping Center, 539 Vista Bella. Sale to benefit FFA chapter

ESCONDIDO - The Orange Glen High School chapter of the FFA will hold a rummage and plant sale from 7 a.m. to noon May 6 at the AG Farm, Midway Avenue and Valley Parkway entrance. Teen summer clubs forming

ESCONDIDO - An orientation about Escondido Education COMPACT's teen summer clubs will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 10 in the Vineyard Room at the East Valley Recreation Center, 2245 E. Valley Parkway.

Summer clubs meet one day each week during June and July to do community service from 1 to 3 p.m. Membership is open to all high school students, including this year's seniors, and to anyone who will be entering high school next fall. Any student who has not previously taken part in the summer clubs is required to attend orientation in order to pick up registration packets.

Registration will be held on a first-come, first-served basis from 3 to 6 p.m. May 11 at the COMPACT offices, 2247 E. Valley Parkway. Last year's summer club members are required to register again this year, and will receive their packets in the mail.

In commemoration of Older Americans Month, Palomar Pomerado Health is offering free installation on its Lifeline service. Lifeline also is offering Mother's Day gift certificates.

Lifeline is an easy-to-use personal response service that ensures older adults living at home will receive quick assistance whenever it is needed, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

By pushing a lightweight, waterproof button that can be worn around the neck or wrist, a subscriber has immediate access to a highly trained monitor who will assess the caller's situation and link each subscriber to the care they need.

Installation on Lifeline will be free through May 31; a savings of $75. The monthly service fee is $39, with no longterm contract required.

Senior center offers rides

CARLSBAD - Carlsbad residents 60 years of age and older who cannot drive and is in need of transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping now have someone to turn to. The Carlsbad Senior Center's Transportation Program could be your solution. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made at 2 p.m. or later and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Bros. The first Thursday afternoon of the month transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's. Mondays through Fridays, seniors can enjoy lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Nominees sought for nonviolence awards

SAN DIEGO - The Tariq Khamisa Foundation, dedicated to breaking the cycle of youth violence, is now accepting nominations for its 10th annual "Gandhi Nonviolence Awards." Fiesta de los Penasquitos on tap

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - The Rancho Penasquitos Town Council will sponsor the 12th annual Fiesta de los Penasquitos from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6 on Black Mountain Road between Twin Trails Drive and Carmel Mountain Road. Admission is free.

The fiesta's theme this year is "Many People, One Community," with many of the festivities geared toward celebrating the different cultures in the community. GOP group holds cookbook fundraiser

CEC offers enrichment lectures

RANCHO BERNARDO - The Continuing Education Center at Rancho Bernardo offers college-level, non-credit enrichment lectures on a variety of subjects.

Upcoming lectures include the following:

  • "The Neolithic Revolution" by Bruno Leone, 1:30 p.m. May 9.

In addition, the CEC will host a free community lecture by political scientist Carl Luna at 7:30 p.m. May 10 at the Oaks North Community Center, 12578 Oaks North Drive.
