FALLBROOK -- The Dream Artisians Spring Faire will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 7 and 8 around the heart-shaped lake at the Grand Tradition, 1602 S. Mission Road. Admission and parking are free. The event will feature artists who handcraft everything from country to fine art. Lunch will be served in the Victorian mansion and there will be a wine tasting with wine from the Fallbrook Winery.

Community garage sale planned

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Community Center will host its annual spring rummage sale from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 1 at the center at 341 Heald Lane.

More than 50 booths will be set up on the lawn and in the auditorium. Event set-up begins at 6:30 a.m. Refreshments will be available.

Space rental is $25 and people can register by calling (760) 728-1671 or stopping by the community center to choose a booth space. Vendors must pre-register and obtain a resale permit number. Those numbers are available by calling (800) 400-7115 or visiting http://www.boe.ca.gov.

Hospital auxiliary hosts blood drive

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary will host the San Diego Blood Bank for a drive from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 9 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. Forty-nine pints were collected at the December drive.

Donors will receive a limited-edition San Diego Blood Bank "do it for the doughnut T-shirt," and be awarded a voucher for a free whale-watching trip donated by Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing & Islandia Sportfishing. Because of rising fuel costs, there will be a $5 surcharge per person. Donors also will receive a voucher good for two free admissions to the San Diego Natural History Museum's exhibit "Genome: The Secret of How Life Works."

Donors should be at least 17 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. People are eligible to give blood every 56 days, and are reminded to eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood.

Church plans women's program

BONSALL -- "When Women Long for Rest" is the topic for author Cindi McMenamin, featured speaker for Womenís Enrichment Night from 6 to 8 p.m. March 8 at Riverview Church. The evening will feature a catered dinner, music, free babysitting, a raffle and door prizes.

McMenamin is a pastor's wife, free-lance writer and author of "Letting God Meet Your Emotional Needs," "When Women Walk Alone," "When God Pursues a Womanís Heart" and "When Women Long for Rest."

She has appeared on television and radio programs across the United States and in Canada.

Land conservancy plans program

Volunteers needed for schoolhouse

ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Historical Society needs docents to allow for one Friday or Saturday afternoon service assisting historic research or sharing local history. No experience is necessary for the unpaid position.

Library celebrates 92nd anniversary

CARDIFF -- Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library will celebrate the library's 92nd birthday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 18 at the library, 2081 Newcastle Ave.

The library was founded in March, 1914, and was located in the Cardiff Mercantile Building at the corner of San Elijo and Chesterfield. The Friends were founded in 1984 to support the library and to advocate for a permanent location.That goal was achieved on March 22, 2003.

Car show rolls into Del Mar

Sisters sought for breast cancer study

SAN DIEGO -- Sisters of women diagnosed with breast cancer are needed to participate in the Sister Study. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health is responsible for the long-term observational study examining environmental and genetic causes of breast cancer.

Farmers market to feature music, baby animals

Arbor Day celebration set for March 11

VALLEY CENTER -- Dos Valles Garden Club will host an Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. March 11 at the Memory Garden in Adams Park, 28751 Cole Grade Road. Members of the club have been working hard to clean up the park for the event.

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872, in Nebraska, where more than 1 million trees were planted. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated all over the world, although the dates vary in keeping with the local climate. California's celebration takes place from March 7 through 14.

Dos Valles members will plant an oak tree at the Memory Garden in memory of members who have died. There also will be a viewing of the new Native Plant Garden, which was made possible by a grant from the California Garden Club Inc.

Take a walk through Escondido history

ESCONDIDO -- Jack Pomeroy will lead a 90-minute "Rediscovering Escondido" walking tour at 11 a.m. March 11. Meet at Broadway and Grand Avenue.

The tour will include stories along "High School Hill," as well as a view of the surrounding hills. The walk includes a steep, two-block section that may be challenging for some. The free tour is sponsored by the Escondido History Center and the Escondido Citizens Ecology Committee and is one of five different routes offered throughout the year.

Toastmasters to conduct workshop

The workshop is designed to develop and improve one's public speaking abilities. Participants can learn how to control nervousness when called on to speak, how to organize information for presentation and how to use voice and body language to keep the attention of their audience. Jazz concert to benefit L.R. Green

Sheriff's Station seeks senior volunteers

SAN MARCOS -- The San Marcos Sheriff's Station's Senior Volunteer Patrol Program is seeking new members. As the "eyes and ears" of the Sheriff's Department, the Senior Volunteer Patrol covers all of San Marcos and unincorporated areas of North County, from Lawrence Welk Village to Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest.

Duties include checking on the homes of residents who are away; checking on home-bound individuals who participate in the You Are Not Alone program; and patrolling parking areas for violations of handicapped parking rules. They also report abandoned cars, graffiti and other signs of suspicious activities; perform office duties; and assist deputies in various ways.

Applicants must be age 50 or older, have a valid driver's license, undergo a background check and have their physician's approval. Candidates then participate in a 70-hour training program. The next training academy will begin in May.

O'side Senior Center hold ballroom dance

The art of photo transfers to be taught

OCEANSIDE -- Kate McCavitt will present a two-session workshop on the Art of Photo Transfers from 6 to 9 p.m. on two consecutive Mondays, March 13 and 20 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, School of Art, 219 N. Coast Highway. Explore photo transfers onto paper, canvas and even wood. Learn surface preparation and multiple transfer techniques, hand coloring black and white and sepia photos for copy transfers, as well as creating original art by hand embellishing, underpainting, overpainting, collage and mixing mediums.

  • Palm Springs Follies, April 7. Cost is $74 for members and $84 for nonmembers. Trip includes motorcoach transportation, time on your own in Palm Springs and admission to the matinee featuring Jo Ann Castle.
  • Anza Borrego Desert, April 11. Cost is $65 for members and $75 for nonmembers. Trip includes motorcoach transportation, narration and guided desert walk with a SDSU professor, picnic lunch and stops at Dudley's Bakery and a family farm grapefruit stand.
  • Viejas Casino and outlet stores, April 27. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Trip includes motorcoach transportation and a coupon booklet for Viejas and the stores.

CAMP PENDLETON -- The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet March 11 at the San Luis Rey Officers' Club. Breakfast will be at 9:30 a.m. Dr. Delores Wardell, author of Naomi's Place, a story of two women who started an orphanage in the coal mining region of Appalachia, will present the program, "From Orphanages to Foster Homes: Where are the Children?" Christian Women's Club to meet

LAKE SAN MARCOS -- "Far Away Places" is the theme of the San Marcos-Vista Christian Women's Club's luncheon scheduled for 11:30 a.m. March 20 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive. Cost is $11, all inclusive.

Guest speaker Vivian Baniak, a published freelance writer and former American Embassy employee, will share how as an embassy employee, she was able to offer hope to hurting families living in "far away places."

The special feature will be a "Magic Jam" with renowned magician Michael E. Johnson, who recently was named Entertainer of the Year by his peers in the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Music will be provided by inspirational singer Woody McClinton of Oceanside.
