North San Diego County School News Briefs: TPHS students earn AP Scholar Awards

CARMEL VALLEY - A total of 508 students at Torrey Pines High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar from the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Students took AP Exams in May after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on the exams.

At Torrey Pines High School, 42 students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. These students are Brian Alford, Gregory Bernstein, Michael Chen, Ryan Chuang, Amanda DeMarco, Jamie Ding, Michelle Filiba, Stephen Goodman, Auroni Gupta, Danielle Jabin, Lina Kaisey, David Khaw, Eugene Kolinko, Nathan Koon, Dylan Lake, Connie Lam, Bryan Lau, Graeme Lazarus, Ernest Lee, Philip Lin, Jeffrey Lio, Brandon Liu, Bo Ma, Anthony Neuberger, Chandramani Ramachandran, Yasuyuki Sakurai, Rafael Send, Carolyn Southern, Jenny Tan, Sean Tanaka, Henry Tung, Abhilasha Tyagi, Alice Wang, Vivian Wang, Alex Warburton, Steven Wilfong, Karen Ye, Cindy You, Joanne Zhang, Kevin Zhang, Phillip Zhang and Wendy Zhao.

A total of 207 TPHS students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of three or higher on five or more of the exams.

One hundred five TPHS students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of three or higher on four or more of the exams.

One hundred ninety-six TPHS students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of three or higher.

Of this year's award recipients at Torrey Pines High School, 31 were sophomores at the time of the test: Mostafa Al-Alusi, Vivek Bhagwat, Vivek Bhave, Alan Cai, Alexander Chan, Alex Chang, Samuel Chang, Stella Chen, Irene Cheng, Parker Clark, Tianqi Gao, Annie Jia, Cynthia Jiang, Anirudh Kumar, Jerry Li, Xinyang Liu, Kevin Lo, Kaichen Ma, William Minteer, Olivia Petrocco, Daniel Qu, Justin Shyu, Joongyu Song, Eric Tsai, Justin Uang, Xinran Wang, Zehui Wang, Tara Wu, Jessie Yu, Jessica Yuan and Edward Zhu.

Most of the nation's colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams.

SPHS Parents Club meets Nov. 15

ESCONDIDO - The San Pasqual High School Parents Club will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the school library. RBV to hold Stussy Sale

VISTA - Rancho Buena Vista High School's Grad Nite committee will hold a Stussy Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in the teachers' parking lot of the school, 1601 Longhorn Drive. In addition to Stussy items, brand names including Paul Frank, World Industries and DC will be featured.

St. Patrick Parish school plans festival

CARLSBAD - St. Patrick Parish School, 3820 Pio Pico Drive, will hold its annual Fall Festival and Chili Cookoff from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10.

Activities will include game booths, rock climbing, sliding on giant inflatable slides and ceramic painting by Color Me Mine. There will be demonstrations by Gitso Dojo Americano; Gyminy Kids Oceanside; and Butler, Searon, O'Conner Irish Dancers. A monkey bridge courtesy of Boy Scout troop 748 also will be featured. Canyon Crest plans Holiday Bazaar

CARMEL VALLEY - More than 15 vendors will offer famous designer products for a fraction of retail prices at Canyon Crest Academy Foundation's Holiday Bazaar from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Star of India restaurant, 3860 Valley Center Drive. Admission is free to the event, which will feature designer products from Juicy Couture, Rock 'n' Roll Republic, True Religion, L.A.M.B. and other labels. Other vendors will include Golden Treasures Jewelers Del Mar, which will offer a One-Day-Only Sale, and Truly Noteworthy, which will offer custom note cards, trendy fashion jewelry and unique gift items. The foundation will sponsor a Holiday World Market, which will sell cookies, preserves, handcrafted table decorations, candles and other items.

Judo tournament planned

VISTA - The Pacific Southwest Judo Association will hold its annual tournament starting at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Rancho Buena Vista High School. Competitors from 5 to 75 will compete under IJF rules on three mats. Spectators, especially those interested in the Olympic sport of judo, are encouraged to attend. Bishop's School plans Admissions Open House

LA JOLLA - The Bishop's School will hold an Admissions Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 10 on campus, 7609 La Jolla Blvd. The meeting was rescheduled to the date because of the recent wildfires. Prospective students and their parents are invited to learn more about the school and tour classrooms, performing arts and athletic facilities, and new learning center where students enhance their study skills. Encinitas resident makes dean's list

Stephen Silver of Encinitas recently earned a spot on the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass.

Carlsbad resident enters medical school

Robert Beers of Carlsbad has entered the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine as part of the class of 2011. He is studying to be an osteopathic physician. Beers earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Cal State San Marcos. He is the son of Lowell and Deborah Beers of Carlsbad.

Canyon Crest places high in math contest

CARMEL VALLEY - Canyon Crest Academy recently placed 25th in a national mathematics contest sponsored by National Assessment & Testing. Coach Brian Shay prepared students for the 2007 Fall Startup Event, the students' first major competition of the academic year, where they worked furiously for 30 minutes, racing to answer 100 problems on a variety of mathematical topics. Several Canyon Crest students earned individual awards: Marco Gentili placed 15th in the ninth-grade division, while Leon Zhou and David Ding placed 11th and 25th respectively in the 10th-grade division.

Rolling Hills plans bazaar, craft fair

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - Rolling Hills School, 15355 Penasquitos Drive, near the Doubletree Resort, will hold a Holiday Bazaar and Craft Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 on campus. The event will feature food, a bake sale, homemade holiday crafts by local artists, games and crafts for children, and an opportunity drawing. Many local companies that provide products and services will be represented. All proceeds will go to the Penasquitos Northeast Action Group, which informs the public about the latest developments affecting the quality of life in northeast Penasquitos.

Golf tournament to benefit ECHS programs

The sixth annual American Heritage Golf Tournament, which benefits Escondido Charter High School athletic and extracurricular programs, will be held Nov. 12 at the Maderas Golf Club, 1770 Old Coach Road.

Registration and a putting contest are planned from 10 a.m. to noon. A shotgun start, best ball - four-player scramble is set for 12:30 p.m., with the tournament ending at 5 p.m. Winners of a lottery will have a chance at a hole-in-one for $100,000. A barbecue dinner and awards ceremony will follow.

Cost for individual players is $175, which includes player spot, golf shirt, gift bag, lunch, dinner and a souvenir foursome photo. Foursome packages are $600. Scratcher cards and a superticket cost $40, which includes two mulligans; five raffle tickets; entry into the putting, long drive and closest-to-the-pin contests; entry into the scratcher game to win a vacation; and entry into the $100,000 shoot-out drawing (four people will be chosen.) Additional dinner tickets cost $35.

Plans for D.C. trip under way

BONSALL - The Sullivan Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association has been busy planning for the annual student trip to Washington, D.C. This year's trip will take place from May 24 through 30. Committee members for the event include Chairwoman Lisa Harrison, Treasurer Gina McInerny and fundraising Chairwoman Tina Bell.

Parents must be PTSA members for their children to take part in the trip. Overall cost of the trip is approximately $1,900, however, much of that can be earned through various PTSA fundraisers. These include raffles, a Bonsall Elementary School carnival event, poinsettia sales, a Santa shop at Bonsall Elementary School, rummage sale, school dance, babysitting nights, casino night and scrip usable at Daniels and Major Market.
