North San Diego County School News Briefs: King scholarships announced

OCEANSIDE - The following students were recent scholarship recipients of the city of Oceanside's 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships Program:

  • Ahvianna M. Armstead, Oceanside High, $1,500. Plans to major in political science with a minor in music, then go to law school. Has a 3.78 grade point average and plans to go to UC Irvine.
  • Ayesha A. Sabree, El Camino High $1,500. Was 2006-07 Youth of the Year at the Oceanside Boys & Girls Club. Plans to go to Palomar College to earn an associate in arts degree in criminal justice and serve as an FBI agent or private investigator.
  • Alonte D. Horn, MiraCosta Adult Learning Center, $2,000. Plans to earn a degree in business at MiraCosta College. Believes in giving back to his family and community by being all that he can be.
  • Timothy D. Rowe-Mitchell, El Camino High, $2,000. Has been in the MCJROTC for 3 1/2 years, plans to major in criminal justice and wants to be a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.
  • Michael N. Henderson, Rancho Buena Vista High, $2,000. Plans to attend West Los Angeles Community College and transfer to UCLA. Plans to major in business finance.
  • Winter Victoria Santana, Ocean Shores High, $2,000. Plans to go to MiraCosta College, then transfer to a four-year university to earn a psychology degree.
  • Narmi Playa-Sandoval, Ocean Shores High, $2,000. Plans to attend MiraCosta to earn a nursing certificate. Has been involved in Associated Student Body and girl's soccer team at Ocean Shores.
  • Khrystyna Gozar Mandigma, Oceanside High, $3,500. Plans to pursue a nursing degree with a specialty in anesthetics. She volunteered at the Tri-City Medical Center and the Health Career Academy.
  • Lanae K. Harper, Guajome Park Academy, $3,500. Wants to study journalism and elementary education. She is the valedictorian of Guajome Park Academy
  • Joi Ashley Fletcher, Vista High, $3,500. Plans to attend Cal State Chico to pursue a degree in nursing. Has volunteered with the MiraCosta Summer Bridge Program. Has a GPA of 3.62.
  • Chun-Han "Hank" Lin, Guajome Park Academy, $3,500. Wants to earn a PhD in engineering. Has volunteered as a peer tutor since the seventh grade and has served on Associated Student Body as school treasurer.
  • Christian M. Parker, Oceanside High, $4,000. Plans to earn a bachelor's degree in math or fashion design. Has volunteered at the Libby Lake Community Center and with the Sun Program painting houses and has been a member of the basketball, track and cheerleading teams.
  • Brittney Juliet Allen, Rancho Buena Vista High, $4,000. Plans to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. to study journalism. Has participated in the concert and marching bands and has been on the varsity track and field teams since her freshman year. Her 3.58 grade point average puts her in the top 25 percent of her

graduating class.

  • Veronica N. Herrera, Oceanside High, $5,000. Wants to be an English teacher to teach kids how to speak up against social injustices. Has volunteered with the Lifeline tutor service, at the library and with the Advancement Via Individual Determination program.
  • Daniel DeRobles, El Camino High, $5,000. Plans to go to San Diego State University to major in psychology/pre-med. Wants to work with patients with mental disorders. Has volunteered with Women's Resource Center, Libby Elementary School, and the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Has been on the varsity soccer team for two years and has a 3.71 grade point average.
  • Khalia Zara Baldwin, El Camino High, $5,000. Wants to study international relations with an emphasis in Middle Eastern affairs. Has been on the mayor's Youth Council and plays on field hockey teams. Has earned enough credits to graduate early with a 3.58 GPA.

Flora Vista students raise money for wheelchairs

ENCINITAS - Sixth-graders at Flora Vista Elementary School recently put on a play.

Throughout practices and performances, they encouraged other students and community members to donate funds to the charity that the sixth-graders had chosen: Free Wheelchair Mission of Santa Ana, which makes and sends simple wheelchairs made of a resin patio chair and two bike tires. Each wheelchair costs $44.40 to make, and is sent to needy people in Third World countries.

The students' goal was to raise $500 to buy 10 wheelchairs. They raised more than $5,000 to purchase 100 wheelchairs. The founder of the organization visited Flora Vista for a small reception and to receive the donation from the sixth-graders.

Carlsbad resident earns scholarship

Diana Lorenz of Carlsbad recently received a five-year, $12,500 Dean's Scholarship from Newman University. She will transfer from Santa Barbara College to Newman this fall. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have at least a 3.3 grade point average and a score of 23 on the ACT exam or 1,600 on the SAT 1.

Mission Estancia Girl Scouts help sick kids

OCEANSIDE - Recently, members of Girl Scout Troop 1611 from Mission Estancia Elementary School collected more than eight large garbage bags of toys to donate to children at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego.

The girls took on the community service project as a way of saying thank you to the hospital for treating a fellow troop member who was hospitalized with a brain infection and needed surgery. The troop collected toy donations at their school, and held performances and a father-daughter dance, where they took contributions. The girl who had been sick held an online sale of jewelry she made during her recovery, raising $8,000 to fund a home movie theater for the hospital playroom.

Pacific Rim principal honored

CARLSBAD - Students, PTA members and parents at Pacific Rim Elementary School recently presented Principal Steve Ahle with a custom surfboard, golf bag and certificate for new golf clubs as a thank you for his leadership for the past eight years. Ahle is leaving Pacific Rim and will be principal of Carlsbad's newest elementary school, Poinsettia Elementary, due to open for the 2007-08 school year.

Area residents make dean's list

NORTH COUNTY - Two area residents recently earned spots on the dean's lists at their respective schools. Alina Gauntlett Shaw of Encinitas was named to the dean's list at Scripps College in Claremont. She recently graduated with a major in Hispanic studies and Latin American studies. Rachel Krause, a graduate of Carlsbad High School, made the dean's list at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. A mathematics major, she is the daughter of Charles and Karen Krause of Carlsbad.

Local students earn prestigious award

NORTH COUNTY - Michael R. Moll from Montecito High School in Ramona and Ashley M. Scott from San Pasqual Academy in Escondido recently were awarded the prestigious Horatio Alger Association's California State Scholarship to assist in funding for their college educations.

Michael and Ashley are two of 100 scholarship recipients in California who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity and hardships in their lives, while also demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, commitment to pursue a college education and desire to contribute to society.

The program is one of the largest need-based financial aid programs in the country and this year, awarded more than 1,200 state scholarships to students, ranging from $2,500 to $10,500 each.

Poway resident is college grad

Christian Dato recently graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. with a bachelor's degree in history/government and law, a double major.

Area residents earn college honors

A number of local residents earned a spot on the winter quarter dean's honors list at UC Santa Barbara. To be placed on the list, students must attain a grade point average of at least 3.75 carrying 12 or more units in the College of Arts and Letters, or 3.50 in the College of Engineering.

Escondido honorees include psychology/philosophy major Christina Anderson, financial mathematics and statistics major Michael Carlson, English major Christopher Clemons, pre-political science major Jasmine Lefever, psychology major Talea Miles, undeclared letters and science program major Caitlin Moyer, pre-communication major Hannah Perry, psychology major Andi Reed, financial mathematics and statistics/economics-mathematics major Ian Roberts, pre-biology major Steven Shedd, global studies-English major Megan Slocum and pre-political science major Anthony Tartanto.

Poway honorees include pre-political science major Andrew Botte Bates, pre-biology major Michael Beccarelli, undeclared letters and science program major Keisha Berglund, English/black studies major Briana Brickley, global studies major Whitney Broeking, English major Dawn Burley, English major Lisa Gary, history/religious studies major Megan Pucket, pre-psychology major Robin Ribnik and communication/business economics major Miriam Shoval.

Ramona resident Julia Ausin, an art history/art major made the list, as did Vista resident and pre-communication major Nicole Gaskari.

San Marcos honorees include pre-psychology major Corey Price and business economics/Spanish major Jessica Villalobos.

Valley Center honorees included communication major Alicia Harrison, mechanical engineering major Coleman Murray and pre-communication major Carolyn Wheatley.

Summer library programs continue

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook Library's summer programs have begun.

The schedule is:

  • 10:30 a.m. July 11: Pacific Animal Productions, preschool.
  • 10:30 a.m. July 12: Puppet show, school age, presented by Icarus Puppets, Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St.
  • 10:30 a.m. July 18: Puppet show Kathy Felker of Puppet Productions puts on a show featuring a variety of puppets, preschool age.
  • 10:30 a.m. July 19: Radical Reptiles, school age, Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St.
  • 10:30 a.m. July 25 Stu Mulligan's Music and Juggling, preschool.
  • 10:30 a.m. July 26 Alakazam Magic Show, school age, featuring Jeff Marcus, Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St.

Teen programs will be held at the library and will be:

  • 3 p.m. July 19: Magic instruction, Tony Bradley teaches how to do magic tricks with cards and coins.
  • 3 p.m. Aug. 2: Forensics and fingerprints: Cindy McQuein shows how to take and lift fingerprints from various surfaces.
  • 3 p.m. Aug. 9: Special-effect makeup: Christine Friel, professional movie makeup artist teaches techniques for applying movie makeup.

All programs are free of charge and are sponsored by the Friends of the Fallbrook Library with help from members of the National Charity League.

Prizes are funded by the San Diego County Library System, Friends of the Fallbrook Library and Wee Little Sprouts of Fallbrook. Anyone desiring to donate prizes may contact the librarians at the Fallbrook Library at (760) 728-2373.
