MURRIETA - A grand opening for Murrieta school district's Early Childhood Education Center will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Avaxat Elementary School. The opening will be held in conjunction with the school district's annual Health, Safety and Information fair.

The event will include children's activities, free books, entertainment, refreshments, resource materials and information for local families.

The center is for children 6 weeks to 3 years old and will offer classes and programs to help children develop.

The events are sponsored by the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Parent Center, 24300 Las Brisas Road North. For information, call Kate Hamaker at 696-1600, Ext. 2175.

Park to open Saturday

LAKE ELSINORE - Perret Park is set to open at 10 a.m. Saturday. The park, in Lakeland Village, will offer access to Lake Elsinore.

Perret Park also features a volleyball area, tot lot, basketball court, gazebo with picnic tables, restroom facilities and a resurfaced parking lot.

Coffee shops celebrates opening

MURRIETA - Classic cars, live music and free drinks will be among the festivities marking the grand opening of It's A Grind coffee house in Murrieta.

Music will be provided by Southern Comfort Jazz and the Drifters Car Club will display more than 20 classic cars, with trophies awarded for various categories. Customers who sign up for It's A Grind's Perks Club will receive a free drink coupon. Owners Bill and Dot Gallahan will donate a portion of the day's proceeds to the local Boys and Girls Club.

ACLU topic for GOP club

TEMECULA - Rees Lloyd, a former American Civil Liberties Union attorney, who now considers the ACLU "the Taliban of American liberal secularism," will speak when the Temecula Valley Republican Women Federated meets Monday at Sizzler.

Fire history topic of talk

TEMECULA - "A Fire History of the Santa Rosa Plateau" will be discussed at a meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Bear Creek Fire Station.

Over the past century, a number of fires have burned on the plateau and surrounding areas. The Riverside County Fire Department will speak about those and how they indicate where fires are likely to reoccur.

The talk is free and fire safety materials will be available.

Cooking class offered

MURRIETA - A cooking class offered by Murrieta Valley Unified School District Adult Education will begin Monday. Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vista Murrieta High School.

The first session of Cooking with Chef Zees will feature Chinese cooking.

The cost is $80 for eight weeks, plus $7 per class to cover the cost of the food being prepared.

Electoral system topic of meeting

TEMECULA - A public forum, "Voters vs. Vendors, Who Wins?," will be sponsored by Citizens for Democracy at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Mary Phillips Senior Center.

The forum will feature a citizen review of the state of electronic voting in Riverside County. Following the review, citizens will be asked to deliberate the question, "Does the Riverside County electoral system operate on the basis of consent or trust?"

Citizens for Democracy is a nonpartisan organization promoting citizen-centered public policy dialogue.

Women's club marks 2nd decade

SUN CITY - The Menifee Valley Woman's Club will begin its 20th year of service at a meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church

Water topic for rose society

High Hopes marks anniversary

TEMECULA - High Hopes, a social recreation program for people with developmental disabilities, will celebrate its eighth anniversary with a Mardi Gras-themed dinner dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Temecula Community Center.

The High Hopes dance team will perform a number from the play "Hairspray."

The cost is $1 for residents, $2 for nonresidents.

Heroes With Heart dinner Sept. 21

TEMECULA - The Trauma Intervention Program of Southwest Riverside County will honor those who are first at an emergency scene and go the extra mile to help others during the third annual Heroes With Heart event at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at Pechanga Resort & Casino.

TIP volunteers provide emotional and practical support to victims immediately after a tragic event. They are called to emergency scenes by police, firefighters and hospital personnel throughout Southwest County.

The cost for the dinner is $75.

Komen art contest is Saturday

TEMECULA - The annual Kids 4 Komen Art Contest to support the Inland Empire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Playland at The Promenade.

The goal of the event is for each child to find a creative way to help share the Komen organization's promise: To save lives and end breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality of care and energizing science to find the cure.

Entries can also be downloaded and mailed in by Monday to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Inland Empire, 26765 Madison Ave., Suite 108, Murrieta, CA 92562.

The winners will be announced at the ninth annual Race for the Cure on Oct. 21 at The Promenade. Winners in each age category will receive a U.S. savings bond.

Temecula fitness program ends Sunday

TEMECULA - The Fitness in Temecula program will conclude for the year with a Run for Fitness starting at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Community Recreation Center.

The 5 and 10 kilometer walk/run will be around Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

The cost is $25 for those 18 and older. It's free for youth with paid adults or $10 for other youths. Race day registration will be from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m.

The FIT program, concluding its third year, helps residents keep in shape by walking or running around a track. Information about health topics was offered and tracking cards were available for people who wanted to track their progress.

Fibromyalgia health camp set

TEMECULA - A Fibromyalgia Wellness Camp, a series of nine weekly classes about health and fitness, begins Sunday at PowerHouse Gym.

Organizers say the "team-training" style event will cover various topics, offer chances for group discussion and led to a greater understanding about health and fitness related to fibromyalgia.

The 90-minute workshops begin at 4 p.m. The $169 cost includes supplements and materials.

Free health talks offered

LAKE ELSINORE - The Lake Elsinore Senior Center is offering three free health talks for adults- on arthritis, skin care and the need for water.

The Arthritis Support Group will welcome a speaker from the Arthritis Foundation who will discuss pain relief at 12:15 p.m. Monday.

Prime Care and Health Net will provide free sun damage screenings at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a speaker on skin health at 12:15 p.m.

A free lecture, "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" will be offered at 12:15 p.m. Sept. 26.

Pediatric first aid class offered

MURRIETA - Pediatric first aid and CPR courses will be offered by the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Parent Center from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Sept. 22.

The class meets Department of Public Social Services licensing requirements. The cost is $75 and registration is required prior to the class date.

Grief support group meets

MURRIETA - A grief support group meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month at Temecula Valley Church of Religious Science.

The Rev. Ron Card leads the group, which for those who have experienced a loss of any type.

MURRIETA - Heartland Hospice offers a free support group for those who are experiencing grief from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the Murrieta Senior Center.

Center offers classes, groups

SUN CITY - Tai chi classes are offered from 9:15 to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday at Center for Spiritual Living.

Classes are free, but an offering is accepted.

Two support groups meet at the center, as well. Overeaters Anonymous meets at 10 a.m. Mondays and Co-dependence Anonymous meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.

MURRIETA - The annual Aging with Dignity Symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Rancho Springs Medical Center.

Free registration includes a health screening, continental breakfast, opportunity to win door prizes, educational booths and information presented by experts in the fields of physical fitness and health, elder fraud, elder abuse, hospice, Social Security, Medicare/Medi-Cal, long-term care and end-of-life planning, asset protection and financial security and levels of care for the elderly.

Senior driving course offered

The AARP driver safety program, a classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older will be offered this month.

MURRIETA - Representatives of HICAP will provide information for seniors Sept. 21 at the Murrieta Senior Center.

HICAP - Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program - is administered by the California Department of Aging.

Information about Medicare, retirement planning, health insurance and coverage, and future health-related costs will be available.

The program visits the center the first and third Friday of the month. Consultations are free, but appointments are required by calling (800) 434-0222.

Shot clinic hours revised

RIVERSIDE - Vaccination times at the Riverside animal shelter now include Fridays. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday.

Vaccination prices for dogs are $6 for rabies and bordatella, or kennel cough, shots and $9 for distemper/parvo.

Cat vaccination prices are $18 for tapeworm, $14 for distemper, $10 for feline leukemia and $6 for the Corona virus.

The shelter also schedules low-cost vaccination clinics once a month. The next one is Saturday
