Michelle's Place to hold financial aid workshop

TEMECULA -- A financial workshop to assist women going through breast cancer will be offered Thursday by Michelle's Place Breast Cancer Resource Center.

The workshop, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temecula Community Recreation Center, will help women find and understand various financial resources. It will feature speakers discussing gas, food, utility, prescription, home care, mortgage and rental assistance. The workshop is free for women going through breast cancer.

The workshop came out of the center's Pink Ribbon assistance program, which helps women in need.

"We find a lot of them are struggling with finding financial help," said Michelle's Place's Carrie Linden. "We want them to see what's out there in the community."

Linden said many of the women are not aware of what's available.

There are eight speakers scheduled to appear and other organizations will make literature available.

Linden said the workshop will help participants match faces with organizations, which will help make it more comfortable when working with some of the agencies.

Adult fitness swimmers meet in Temecula

TEMECULA -- A Masters Swim Program for adults is held from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Temecula Elementary School pool.

The cost is $30 per month, and participants will need to join United States Masters Swimming.

Disaster training offered

SUN CITY -- Sun City Disaster Services will hold a public training event at 1 p.m. Wednesday in North Town Hall.

Julie Pardini, disaster director from American Red Cross, will discuss her organization's role in a disaster.

Transportation to be discussed

TEMECULA -- A discussion about the future of transportation in Riverside County will be held when Citizens for Democracy meets at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Mary Phillips Senior Center.

Temecula City Councilman Ron Roberts will be the featured presenter.

Citizens for Democracy is a nonpartisan organization promoting citizen-centered public policy dialogue.

Native plants topic of talk

RIVERSIDE -- A program titled "Cactus, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada," will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District.

The free program is hosted by the California Native Plant Society, Riverside-San Bernardino chapter.

Stephen Ingram, a botanist, writer and photographer, will give a multimedia presentation that will examine the natural history of these plants, including their origins, ecology, conservation, practical horticultural advice for cultivation and share some of the best places to see these succulents in the wild. The program will showcase species and varieties that occur in California's deserts and coastal areas.

The California Native Plant Society offers programs, workshops and field trips to promote appreciation, conservation and use of native plants in gardens and natural landscapes.

Woman's guild plans tea

TEMECULA -- St. Catherine's Catholic Church Woman's Guild will hold a tea at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

The guild will be registering members for the new year. Dues are $15.

Cops For Kids plan fundraiser

LAKE ELSINORE -- The 11th annual Cops For Kids fundraiser will have a beach theme when its held at 6 p.m. Friday at Links @ Summerly golf course.

The cost is $95 per person. Cops for Kids benefits children and seniors in Lake Elsinore.

TEMECULA -- Rhythms, a dance party for Temecula residents 15 to 18 years old, will be held from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Seniors invited to football game

SUN CITY -- Senior citizens are invited to the Super Senior Kick-Off event Friday at Heritage High School in Homeland.

Super Senior members will receive free bus transportation and tickets to the football game between Heritage and Lakeside.

Bus pickup sites will include the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center and the Oasis community.

Super Seniors is a collaboration of the Menifee Valley PTA Council, Perris Union High School District, the Ceniceros Center and Partnership for Healthier Communities.

Tea, fashion show planned at center

SUN CITY -- A high tea and fashion show will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center.

Burke's Outlet in Sun City will provide the fashions, featuring 20 outfits for children, teens, adults and seniors.

The event, sponsored by Family Service Association, also will include door prizes and a pianist. Tea sandwiches will be served with scones, petit fours, lemon bars and fresh fruit. Volunteers will be dressed in tuxedos to assist serving tea.

The cost is $20 per person in advance, or $25 at the door. It's $10 for children 11 and younger. All proceeds benefit the Ceniceros Center.

The center offers programs and services such as senior nutrition, exercise, recreational and special events. They recently started game days that include table games and the Wii Fit video game.

Boy Scouts plan car wash

Square dance club plans event

TEMECULA -- The Grape Stompers Square Dance Club will hold its Grape Stomp Saturday at the Temecula Community Center.

TEMECULA -- A 5-kilometer Walk Through the Vineyards benefiting Michelle's Place, the breast cancer resource center, will be held Saturday at Maurice Car'rie Winery. Registration begins at 7 a.m., race begins at 8.

The cost is $20 per person, and includes a race T-shirt.

Dancers plan tryouts

MURRIETA -- A Murrieta dance team will hold auditions for female dancers ages 21 and older from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Oldlympics open Saturday

Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District's 24th annual Oldlympics will be held Saturday to Oct. 7 at various locations in Hemet and San Jacinto.

There will be 18 events for people 50 and older: Bench press, billiards, bowling, bridge, cribbage, fun-tathlon, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, Texas hold 'em, pickle ball, pinochle, Scrabble, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, tennis and track and field.

The cost is $5 for one event, $8 for up to three, $10 for up to five, $15 for up to eight and $20 for unlimited events. The Oct. 7 awards banquet costs $6.

Genealogy and history fair planned

TEMECULA -- Temecula Valley Genealogical Society will hold its annual Genealogy and History Fair from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at Temecula Public Library.

The event will feature experts in British, Italian, German and United States family research. Also participating will be the Temecula Valley Historical Society, Temecula Valley Museum, Vail Ranch Restoration and the Murrieta Family History Center.

In addition, there will be experts on Internet family research. Venders will include representatives who provide photo restoration, custom bookbinding and scrapbook supplies. There will also be information provided on patriotic and lineal societies.

Museum seeks docents

TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Museum is looking for volunteers for its docent program.

Docent help museum visitors learn about the history of the Temecula Valley. Training will be provided.

The museum will offer a series of docent training classes starting Sept. 22. Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to noon for six Mondays.

Docents will be trained in presentation techniques and history relating to the cultural heritage of the Temecula Valley. Candidates are required to attend the full training course and sign up for at least one to three days of service each month.

Day of Wine and Chocolate tickets available

TEMECULA -- Pastry chefs and chocolatiers will offer their sweet sensations in concert with wines from Temecula Valley's wineries at Hospice of the Valley's 12th annual "A Day of Wine and Chocolate" fundraiser. The event will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Wilson Creek Winery.

Music will be provided by Guilty Conscience. There will be silent and live auctions for items such as a private catered dinner utilizing chocolate in the salad, entree and dessert courses.

Tickets are $50 in advance and $75 at the door. Picnic lunches provided by The Forge are available for an additional fee.

Nonprofits sought for festival

TEMECULA --- Nonprofit community service organizations are invited to participate in the city's Halloween Family carnival from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

Groups may request a 10-foot, by 10-foot game booth for no charge. The group is responsible for providing table, chairs, canopies and game supplies. The city will provide candy and prizes.

SERVING THE FLAG

Air Force Airman Eric G. Durbin, Air Force Airman Danielle M. Selisker and Air Force Airman Vanessa B. Callirgos have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Durbin, the son of Marcella Durbin of Temecula and Robert Durbin of Jamul, is a 2006 graduate of Chaparral High School.

Selisker, the daughter of Kathy Liso of Sun City, is a 1998 graduate of La Serna High School in Whittier.

Callirgos, the niece of Anna Callirgos of Wildomar, is a 2007 graduate of Elsinore High School.

Army Pvt. Lynn M. Hopkins has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

Hopkins, the daughter of Lance Hopkins and Sandy Hopkins, both of Fallbrook, is a 2007 graduate of Julian Charter High School in Murrieta.

Navy Seaman Charles V. Hull and Navy Seaman Recruit Israel Harris recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, they completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Hull, the son and stepson of David and Stephanie Hull, of Murrieta, is a 2007 graduate of Murrieta Valley High School.

Harris, the son of Diana Harris of Temecula and Israel Harris of San Marcos, is a 2006 graduate of Hemet High School.
