Southwest Riverside County Community News Briefs: Quilts to color Old Town in annual display

TEMECULA - More than 150 patchwork quilts will be displayed in Old Town from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, as the Valley of the Mist Quilters Guild presents its ninth annual Outdoor Quilt Display.

The quilts will be on display on banisters and storefronts from archway to archway in Old Town Temecula along Old Town Front Street, as well as inside some businesses and in the gallery at the Mercantile, 42051 Main St. Admission is free.

A "small quilt" silent auction will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a "large quilt" live auction will take place at 1 p.m., both in the courtyard of the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main St. The proceeds will benefit the children of Hugs Foster Family Agency in Temecula.

The show draws spectators and quilt enthusiasts from across Southern California. The featured quilter, Lyn Mann, has been featured in numerous books and magazines.

The Quilters' Guild will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Recreation Center.

Norah McMeeking, a nationally recognized speaker and author of "Bella Bella Quilts," will speak at the meeting. She will also conduct a two-day workshop Monday and Oct. 12 using her pattern, St. Mark's Wall Hanging.

Board member named to Friends of Reagan group

TEMECULA - Susan Weaver has been elected to the board of directors of the Friends of Ronald Reagan SP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to individual initiative and the recognition of those whose positive attitudes help the community.

Weaver, of Temecula, has five children. She earned a master's degree in education and has taught literature, composition and speech in home school settings for 21 years. She also teaches SAT preparation at Palomar College and Temecula's Biola Star program.

Under her direction, teens visit Temecula schools to present the history of the sports park. She created a lesson plan for third-graders teaching how locals built a sports park, without government funds, earning Reagan's praise.

The Friends of Ronald Reagan Sports Park, in association with the Temecula posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Michael McCracken, are still seeking nominations for the second annual Tribute to Veterans, which will be held Dec. 1 in the Community Recreation Center at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

The tribute will honor those who continue to serve the community.

Tax consultants group meets today

SUN CITY - California Society of Tax Consultants invites enrolled agents, certified public agents and California registered tax preparers to its dinner meeting from 5:15 to 8:30 p.m. today. The group meets the first Wednesday of the month at Boston Billie's restaurant, 26850 Cherry Hills Blvd.

Democrats to give awards

TEMECULA - The Democratic Club of Southwest County will hold its third annual Democrats' Awards Night at 6 p.m. Thursday at Temeku Hills Country Club.

The awards recognize those who work to improve the quality of life and maintain Democratic values in the region. The recipients are Tom Courbat, Maxine Ewig, Doug Dye and Bernice Evendorff.

The evening will include dinner and speaker Louis Vandenberg of KPFK radio, who has experienced a run for Congress.

Bibleland topic for history group

TEMECULA - Don Conibear, son of the late artist Ted Conibear, who created the once famous tourist draw, Bibleland, will speak when the Temecula Valley Historical Society meets at noon Friday at the historical Pujol Schoolhouse on Santiago Road.

The club hopes that many of the local models who posed for the lifesize sculpture of The Last Supper, or their children, will turn out for a re-creation photo.

Computer users to meet Saturday

TEMECULA - The Internet will be the topic when the Temecula Valley Computer Users Group meets Saturday at Temecula Public Library.

At 10 a.m., Cheryl Wester will continue last month's presentation on recording streaming media from the Internet. She will demonstrate how to record music and radio shows and use a computer to its best advantage.

At 11 a.m., Bill Harkins will give a talk on "History of the Internet." He will describe the early Internet as used only by military, government and universities, growing into the global phenomenon of usage by millions worldwide. He will also discuss Web 2.0, showing some of the collaborative Web sites and exciting Web features.

Lions plans lunch, fashion show

TEMECULA - The Temecula Lions Club will present its annual Autumn Leaves Luncheon and Fashion Show at noon Saturday at the Temecula Community Recreation Center.

The $25 admission includes lunch. Proceeds benefit the Lions Club International Fund's Sight First Program, which assists impoverished patients suffering from river blindness and other maladies in Third World countries.

Pancake breakfast to raise funds

QUAIL VALLEY - The Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its monthly pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and younger.

The money will go to the volunteer station, which covers Quail Valley and portions of Canyon Lake and Menifee.

Single moms group holds fundraiser

TEMECULA - A comedy night Oct. 12 will benefit Single Mothers United in Rewarding Fellowship, a nonprofit group supporting single moms and their children.

Comedienne Kathy Westfield will appear at the 7 p.m. event at Rancho Community Church. She was a winner on "America's Funniest People." Childcare is available for children younger than 10.

In five years, SMURF has welcomed 375 parents to its weekly meetings and Sunday dinners. Some moms receive help with basic necessities such as rent and gas, as well as job placement and educational assistance.

Tours of McPherson castle offered

LAKE ELSINORE - The Lake Elsinore Historical Society will conduct tours of Aimee Semple McPherson's castle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20.
