FALLBROOK —— Rachael Hanewinckel of Fallbrook has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship by the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Hanewinckel is entering her senior year at California Lutheran University.

She is one of 12 students across America who received the Toyota Motor Sales, USA Scholarship, Los Angeles Region, one of the awards the MCSF gives. The foundation was created in 1962 to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships to qualified sons and daughters of Marines and former Marines, as well as Navy Corpsmen who serve with Marines. The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than 19,000 scholarships valued at nearly $29 million during the past 43 years.

This year, the MCSF has awarded a record $1,767,260, the highest amount ever given for scholarships to 1,039 sons and daughters of Marines and former Marines by the Foundation.

Candidates for Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation awards, in addition to being children of Marines or former Marines, must illustrate their commitment to their communities, and provide a record of service to others.

Funding for the awards comes from annual scholarship balls and golf tournaments conducted around the country. Additional funds come from the generous contributions given annually by individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations.
