Theater camps offered in Poway

POWAY -- Winspear Creative and the city of Poway will host summer theater camps the weeks of July 16 and 23 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road. Held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the camps are designed to encourage children to use their imagination and grow through the arts.

Children can learn the art of acting, singing and dancing, as well as specialty skills such as costume and design. Theater games, plays and small performances are all part of the fun-filled camps.

Camps are grouped by age: Children ages 5 and 6 can sign up for Creative Play camp; ages 7 through 9 can enroll in Dramatic Adventure camp; and ages 10 through 12 can join Creative and Performing Arts camp. All campers will receive a T-shirt and will be able to take home any crafts created during the camps.

Girls can audition for a cappella choir

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Becky Rash of Active Audio and Entertainment will hold auditions for the fall semester of the San Diego A Cappella Girls Ensemble on July 20. Girls ages 11 to 17 of all voice ranges are invited to audition.

The choir rehearses once a week at Music for Kids, 16475 Bernardo Center Drive. Each rehearsal focuses on music theory, ear training, improvisation, sight singing, vocal technique and preparation of repertoire. The repertoire is strictly a cappella (without accompaniment) in various genre, including jazz, contemporary, classical, gospel and world. Public performances will be offered several times a year.

Church offers 'School of Rock' workshop

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Church at Rancho Bernardo's Art Institute will present "School of Rock," a one-week workshop for junior high, high school and college students interested in guitar, bass, keyboards or drums/percussion.

Students can learn how to perform rock music and will be taught the basics of the music business, publishing, song writing, recording and sound/technical.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 through 13, with a concert at 7 p.m. July 13, at the church, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court.

Theater arts camp set for July

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court, will offer a theater arts camp for students in first through eighth grade from 8:30 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays, July 16 through 27.

Classes offered will include dance, puppetry, tumbling, musical theater, etiquette, voice and set design. There also will be a special musical review performance at the end of the camp.

Summer acting workshop offered

FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook Players will offer workshops for ages 10 and older that will include the techniques necessary to improve not only theater skills, but improve confidence with life situations, as well.

A four-day "Performing Arts Workshop," led by Diane Felthous, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 24 through 27. Participants will learn about monologues, theater dance and choreography, stage movement, audition techniques, character development, theater make-up, theater vocabulary, stage singing, and more. Cost is $85 for all four days.

A two-day workshop taught by Susan Korean will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 31 and Aug. 1. Day one will be "Tuesday at the Improv," which will focus on improvisation skills, thinking on your feet, body language and impromptu routines. The second day continues with "The Next Best Thing," which is fashioned after the popular television show. Dialects, movement and tips on staying in character will be explored. Cost is $45 for both days.

A student showcase for parents will be presented at each workshop.

Both workshops will be held at the Bonsall Community Center, 31505 Old River Road.

Church offers performing arts camp

ESCONDIDO -- Emmanuel Faith Community Church will host its second "Kickin' It Up" performing arts camp for students entering grades one through eight from July 30 through Aug. 2.

"Kickin' It Up" will feature age-group specific classes that include choreography with Chris McPherson; art classes with the church's resident artist, Eleanor Lane; wild motion/percussion, acoustic, electric and bass guitar classes; gymnastics; and various games.

The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 30, 31 and Aug. 1; and from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2. A student performance showcase is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2.

In addition, aspiring student musicians in grades one through eight who play the drums, keyboard or guitar, can audition July 21 for a Christian rock band that will perform during the week of "Kickin' It Up." Call for an audition time.

HVMS Band, Tall Flag Team reunion planned

ESCONDIDO -- A reunion and dinner for former members of the Hidden Valley Middle School "Raider" Band and Tall Flag Team, classes of 1977 through 1999, will be held Aug. 18 at Felicita Park. Also invited to attend are former music boosters and band parents, as well as family members. The event will be hosted by former director, Jon Riksford.
