Community news briefs: Yard sale to benefit fire victims

FALLBROOK -- A communitywide yard sale to benefit the Fallbrook fire victims will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at Fallbrook High School. Organizers will begin accepting items at 6:30 a.m. The event is hosted by Catalyst Mortgage and ISU Insurance Service. All funds will be donated to Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce Legacy Endowment.

Swap meet set for Nov. 17

FALLBROOK -- The annual fall swap meet at Rancho Monserate Country Club will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 17 in the 19th hole patio area. Items for sale will include household goods, collectibles, furniture, tools, clothing, holiday items, art works, jewelry and antiques.

Some of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the recently organized account at Wells Fargo Bank to aid the fire victims of Valley Oaks Mobile Home Park.

The Rancho Monserate Country Club is at 4650 Dulin Road.

Library bookstore plans sale, holiday boutique

FALLBROOK -- The Bottom Shelf Bookstore will hold its pre-holiday, half-price sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 21. All store merchandise will be half off the price marked.

In addition, the bookstore's Holiday Boutique will run from Dec. 3 through 22. The boutique will feature gift-quality books, audio and video materials, plus a variety of holiday cards. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Oceana to hold ballroom dance

OCEANSIDE -- Oceana will hold a ballroom dance for couples and singles 55 and older from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Nov. 17 at 550 Vista Bella. The dance will feature table seating, finger foods and refreshments, as well as music by The Vidals. Attendees should bring their own alcoholic refreshments. Cost is $6 per person.

Motorcycle ride benefits Toys for Tots

OCEANSIDE -- The Goldwing Road Riders Association chapter CA1N will hold its 20th annual Motorcycle Benefit Ride in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program on Nov. 17. The ride will start at the Oceanside Harbor Parking Lot No. 1 and end at Casino Pauma in Pauma Valley. Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. and run until 11 a.m. From 300 to 400 motorcycle riders are expected to participate and the ride will depart Oceanside Harbor promptly at 11:30 a.m. with Santa and Mrs. Claus leading the way.

Registration fee for the ride is $10 and one new, unwrapped toy or game per participant (rider and co-rider). There will be free coffee and baked goods at the start of the ride and lunch will be provided by Casino Pauma. Tri-City Computer Club to meet

Senior center to hold Winter Ball

OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Senior Center will hold a Winter Ball for anyone 55 and older from 7 to 10 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Beach Recreation Center, 300 N. The Strand. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the senior center, 455 Country Club Lane, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If enough seats are available, tickets will be sold at the door for $12 the night of the event.

The dance will feature the music of South Coast Swing. Although light refreshments will be served, attendees are asked to dine prior to the event as dinner will not be served. The parking fee is waved at Pay Lot 30 at Seagaze and North The Strand and at Pay Lot 24 at Myers Street and Pier View Way. Thanksgiving lunch planned

VISTA -- The Gloria McClellan Senior Center will hold a Thanksgiving Celebration lunch at noon Nov. 21 at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The menu includes roast turkey with gravy, candied yams, cornbread dressing, parsley cauliflower, a roll and cranberry apple dessert. Tuna salad and soup of the day also will be offered. Moonlight Angels to hold Holiday Dinner

VISTA -- The Moonlight Angels Auxiliary will hold its Holiday Dinner meeting from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The annual event includes a White Elephant auction. The public is invited to attend and bring a wrapped gift, funny or useful, for the fast-paced auction.

Library to host fall concert

Kids choir needs singers

MiraCosta offers software workshops

CARDIFF -- "Introduction to Windows XP" and "Intermediate Windows XP" are two one-day workshops offered through MiraCosta's Community Services Program. "Introduction to Windows XP" will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 30; "Intermediate Windows XP" will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 7. Both classes will be held in Room 112 of MiraCosta's San Elijo campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. In "Introduction to Windows XP," students will learn how to save, retrieve, print, and edit their work; learn about the control panel, my computer and my documents folders; learn how to use the word processing and drawing programs; and learn how to work with multiple programs at one time.

In the "Intermediate Windows XP" workshop, students will learn to organize and manage files on the hard drive; rename, delete, copy, and move files and folders; create shortcuts; install and uninstall software; and copy files to a CD. QuickBooks class for business owners

CARDIFF -- Learn the basics of QuickBooks, a program designed for the small- to mid-sized business owner who enjoys Quicken's ease of use but prefers a more traditional approach to accounting. Two workshops of "Introduction to QuickBooks" will be offered: from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 12. Both classes will be held in Room 112 of MiraCosta's San Elijo campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. In the one-day workshop, offered through MiraCosta College's Community Services Program, students will learn to set up a chart of accounts, reconcile checking accounts, create and pay invoices, track payables and receivables, and more. ENCINITAS -- Seaside Center for Spiritual Living will host a benefit concert and dinner and raffle from 6 to 9 p.m. today. The concert features musical artists Jami Lula, Peggy Lebo, Candice Graham and the Seaside Teen Group's own Amanda Walker. Proceeds will go to fund the teen group's winter camp, and 10 percent will go to fire relief in San Diego County.

Holiday festivities planned for Encinitas

ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Holiday Parade will hit the streets of downtown starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The event will kick off with a Tree Lighting ceremony featuring Santa Claus at 5 p.m. in the Lumberyard Center, 937 S. Coast Highway 101. Applications are still being accepted for entry to the parade, themed "Since 1957, a Classic Holiday Tradition," celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Encinitas Parade. Floats, marching bands, children's groups, specialty cars and patriotic organizations will travel along South Coast Highway 101, beginning at the corner of D Street and finishing at J Street. Also celebrating the 1950s theme of this year's event, a costume contest will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in the Encinitas Visitor Center parking lot at Second and and H streets. The city of Encinitas is still seeking volunteers to serve as Parade Route Monitors to assist with the distribution of parade information along the parade route and to monitor spectators during the parade. Motorcycle club to remember 'forgotten warriors'

The Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club/Legacy Vets will remember Lance Cpl. Dennis R. Christie and Lance Cpl. Michael W. Havranek, who were listed as Missing in Action June 11, 1967 in South Vietnam. Both men were with 3rd Force Recon Company out of Camp Pendleton. The helicopter they were in went down while trying to insert Marines.

There will be a motorcycle ride and presentation of "Forgotten Warrior" flags to the men's families on Nov. 17. Riders can meet at San Diego Harley Davidson in Clairemont Mesa at 11 a.m. and the bikes will leave at noon. The run will end at the Pala Community Center on the Pala Indian Reservation for the presentation of the flags, lunch and music.

These are the fourth and fifth "Forgotten Warrior" flags to be presented. The first flag was presented to the parents of Pfc. Thomas F. Green in Ramona during Labor Day weekend 2006. The second flag was sent from Ramona to New Jersey and was presented to the brother and sister-in-law of SP4 John H. Hoeffs on Veteran's Day weekend, Nov. 10. The third flag was sent from Pala to Ocala, Fla. and will be presented to the family of Lt. j.g. Michael R. Zerbe on Nov.18.

Christie joined the Marines from Imperial Beach and Lance Cpl. Michael W. Havranek was from Missoula, MT. Christie's will be presented to his brother, Craig Christie, in Montana. Lance Cpl. Michael Havranek's flag will be presented to his uncle, retired Col. Delbert Hazelhorst, USAF. Call (760) 443-9037.

VFW auxiliary to host holiday bazaar

SAN MARCOS -- The Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795, will host a craft and holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the post, 212 W. Mission Ave. The bazaar will feature handmade crafts and gifts and homebaked goodies. Hamburgers and hot dogs with side dishes will be served at noon for $5.

YMCA to hold bake, craft fair

ESCONDIDO -- The Palomar Family YMCA annual bake and craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the YMCA, 1050 N. Broadway. Proceeds from the fair will benefit Mary's House, a transitional living program in Escondido for young women who are turning 18 and "aging out" of San Diego's foster care system.

Philosophical Library to host medium

ESCONDIDO -- The Philosophical Library, 2091 E. Valley Parkway, will host renowned medium Hollister Rand at two events.

- 7 p.m. Nov. 17: Hollister will give messages to audience members from loved ones living in the spirit world. Cost is $30.

VC Tennis Club fall social on tap

VALLEY CENTER -- The Valley Center Tennis Club will hold its fall social and tennis round robin at 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Adams Park, 28751 Cole Grade Road. Soft drinks and water will be provided; members will bring food to share with all. Also, balls will be provided.

Everyone will be paired for doubles play, and prizes will be awarded for the highest scores in a series of matches.

Tax aspects of fires will be discussed

Holocaust talk, Klezmer concert set

JULIAN -- The Julian branch of the San Diego County Library, 1850 Highway 78, will host a two-part World Music and Cultural Arts program at 1 p.m. Nov. 18.

First, Ramona resident Erwin Levy will present "Eyewitness to the Holocaust." In June 1939, 15-year-old Levy escaped Germany as part of the Kindertransport to England and later served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1944 to 1948.

Following the talk, San Diego's Alexander Gourevitch will present a free Klezmer concert. Trained in Russia, Gourevitch is one of the world's top Klezmer clarinetists.

YMCA to offer Pre-Pig Out Workout

RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- Rancho Family YMCA is offering a Pre-Pig Out Workout from 8 to 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22. For the cost of $10 per person, adults can burn enough calories to earn an extra slice of pie by exercising at the state-of-the-art Wellness Center or attending a full line-up of holiday fitness classes.

Adults can participate in "Step and Sculpt," "Pilates" or "Family Yoga" classes, and the lap pool will be available from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Kids can join in the "Family Yoga" class, make a craft or try their steps at "Dance Dance Revolution."

All proceeds raised from this event will go toward the YMCA new-equipment fund.

RB Chorale to present holiday show

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Tickets are on sale for the RB Chorale's holiday performance of "A Jingle Bell Celebration" at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21 and 22 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The popular concert is always a sell out. Net proceeds will go toward scholarship awards for musically talented local high school graduating seniors.

Under the direction of Pat Bean, the group rehearses every Tuesday evening to prepare for an upbeat concert that features chorale numbers, featured singers, dancing, costumes and a lavish set design.

Also, the U.S. Marines will be on site with its Toys for Tots drive; patrons are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy.

Rotarians add blogger to club

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Paul Gorman has been inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club. He specializes in the sale and leasing of office and industrial properties for Sperry Van Ness.

Gorman spent more than 20 years in the software industry before entering commercial real estate and also served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years as an aviator, reaching the rank of commander.

'Carols by Candlelight' performances set

ESCONDIDO -- The 18th annual "Carols by Candlelight," benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego, will take place at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Performers will include country artists Joe Nichols, Collin Rae, Juice Newton, Buck Howdy and others.

The family event will feature the celebrity performers singing holiday songs, as well as their own hits onstage. Hosted by San Diego County Credit Union, the evening will conclude with a rendition of "Silent Night" sung by the stars and the audience by candlelight in an outdoor courtyard.
