OCEANSIDE - The Joseph H. Pendleton chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars will meet Sept. 22 at Coco's Restaurant, 3905 Mission Ave. Social hour is at 11 a.m., lunch at noon. At 1 p.m. the speaker will be a U.S. Air Force officer who will help celebrate the 60th birthday of the Air Force. Cake will be served. Cost: $13. Hawaiian Canoe Regatta and festival set

OCEANSIDE - The Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club and Toyota of Escondido will present Discover Tundra Summer Luau on Sept. 15 during the Harbor Days Festival at the Oceanside Harbor.

A Hawaiian Canoe Regatta with awards will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Canoes, paddles and instruction will be provided for those who want to join in the friendly competition. A Hawaiian festival featuring Hawaiian dancers and live music will follow the canoe regatta from 1:30 to 4:30.

Cougar Athletic Club breakfast set

ESCONDIDO - The Cougar Athletic Club will host its quarterly breakfast Sept. 15 at Cocina del Charro restaurant, 525 N. Quince St. The guest speaker will be John Cunningham, who is an Escondido resident and former baseball coach at the University of San Diego. Fellowship will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a buffet breakfast served at 9:15. Cost for breakfast is $11. Information: Club Secretary George Cordry, (760) 751-1750.

The club, which has 200 members, is open to former Escondido High School athletes, students, coaches, teachers, counselors, administrators and friends.

Volunteers sought to clean up trail

DEL MAR - The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy will sponsor habitat restoration events from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the San Dieguito Lagoon at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Volunteers are needed to help remove non-native vegetation and debris along one of the newest segments of the San Dieguito River Park's Coast-to-Crest Trail. Participants should bring water and sun protection and wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes.

Pacific Belles to hold Tea and Fashion Show

ESCONDIDO - "Classic Costume Curtain Call" will be the theme of the Pacific Belles Chapter of Sweet Adelines International's ninth annual Tea and Fashion Show set for Sept. 15 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., with the show to begin at 2.

Costumes from past Sweet Adelines competitions will be modeled by members accompanied by songs from each competition. Directed by Dick Fields, the Pacific Belles will perform songs from the group's repertoire and showcase its newest quartet, 4 on the Floor. Special guest quartet will be A Song and a Smile from the Palomar Pacific Men's Barbershop Chorus. Beverages and homemade goodies will be served. A raffle also is planned. Co-chairwomen for the event are Darlene Thorud, lead, and Mary Walman, baritone.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Proceeds from this event and other chorus events go to the Young Singers Foundation.

Event for dog owners on tap

SAN MARCOS - The Silver Bay Kennel Club will present American Kennel Club Responsible Dog Ownership Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at the California School of Dog Grooming, 655 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road. Signups will take place from 11 a.m. to noon.

Activities will include Canine Good Citizen testing, dog grooming and canine nutrition seminars and a rummage sale. There also will be contests from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Categories include waggiest tail, longest ears, best kisser, furriest, dog and owner look-alike, ugliest dog and best costume. In addition, attendees can groom their dogs under the supervision of professional grooms. Owners must bring their own grooming tools.

Admission is free; dogs must be leashed.

NARFE to hold rummage sale

OCEANSIDE - The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15 in the parking lot of the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane.

Donations will be accepted from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Part of the proceeds will be given to the Alzheimer's Association to benefit research.

Media makers to speak at CSUSM

SAN MARCOS - Cal State San Marcos will host a presentation by Jodi Wille and Adam Parfrey, two controversial, independent media makers and book publishers whose work explores topics from Oujia boards to Mexican pulp art and punk rock.

The free event is part of the university's fall Mediamaker Series and will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in Academic Hall Room 102 on the CSUSM campus, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road.

Parent advocates group to meet

POWAY - Parent Advocates Seeking Solutions, a support group for parents of children ages 15 and older who have developmental disabilities, will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, 16275 Pomerado Road. Special Olympics volunteers needed

NORTH COUNTY - The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, in partnership with Special Olympics, is seeking volunteers for San Diego's fall regional Special Olympics event Sept. 22 in Rancho Bernardo.

Volunteers are needed to serve as time keepers, scorers, referees and for other tasks. Two shifts are available: 8 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

North County Singles Club plans events

NORTH COUNTY - The North County Singles Club invites singles ages 55 and older who like to dance to its Summer Patio Party at 1 p.m. Sept. 22 at the home of its membership chairman.

A $5 fee is requested. Lunch will be provided, along with a variety of beverages. Attendees are asked to bring a small salad or dessert to share.

In addition, the group will hold an Oktoberfest dinner-dance Oct. 7 at the Escondido Country Club. The Tenor Tones will provide live music. Cost is $24.
