Corvette group to gather Thursday

TEMECULA ---- Corvettes of Temecula Valley will hold its monthly membership meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pat & Oscar's restaurant,

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

All Corvette owners are welcome to attend, or to the join the club.

Tax preparers to hear from editor

MURRIETA ---- A talk by someone well-versed in tax issues that affect older people is on the agenda when the California Society of Tax Consultants meets on July 7.

Enrolled agents, certified public accountants and California registered tax preparers are invited to the dinner meeting, which will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Richie's Real American Diner, 40651 Murrieta Hot Springs Road.

The dinner will feature guest speaker Renee Rodda, who is the editor of Spidell Publishing's California Taxletter and associate editor of Spidell's Elder Client Planner newsletter. She lectures extensively on tax issues that affect aging Americans and has authored "Overview of Medicare and Medicaid/Medi-Cal Rules."

The cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

Assembly candidate to address group

MENIFEE ---- Carl Wood, a candidate for the 65th state Assembly District, will be the featured speaker when the Menifee/Perris Valley Democratic Club meets Thursday.

The group gathers at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Menifee Community Center, 30627 Menifee Road. The venue is accessible to people with disabilities.

City Web manager to talk to group

TEMECULA ---- The Web manager for the city of Temecula, Jonathan Hall, will be the featured speaker during Saturday's meeting of the Temecula Valley Computer Users Group.

Hall is scheduled to discuss the city's website, its design and how the content was organized. He also will address public disclosure laws, specifically the laws and rules that govern what kind of information can be uploaded to the site.

The meeting is set for 10:15 a.m. in the Temecula Public Library, 30600 Pauba Road. Visitors are welcome.

Genealogists delve into historical photos

TEMECULA ---- Old photographs will be the topic when the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Speaker Patti Hacke will talk about identifying old photos and present tools to help date them by looking at pose, background and props, clothing and hair style. She will present dozens of old photos to illustrate the techniques.

The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society meets the second Monday of the month at the Temecula Library Community Room, 30600 Pauba Road. Guests are welcome.

Books to be discussed

TEMECULA ---- Books by two authors will be discussed at the July 12 meeting of the Temecula Library Book Discussion Group.

"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and "The Sound and The Fury" by William Faulkner are on the agenda.

Civitan Club meets Monday

TEMECULA ---- Members of the Temecula Valley Civitan Club will meet Monday.

The club is a community service organization that raises money for the developmentally disabled and children's organizations. New members are welcome.

Rotary to meet at new locale

TEMECULA ---- Temecula Sunrise Rotary announced that the club has shifted where it meets each Tuesday morning.

Starting next Tuesday, the group will meet at 7 a.m. each week at Journey's End at Pechanga, 45000 Pechanga Parkway.

Newcomers Club plans fashion show

MENIFEE ---- The Temecula Valley Newcomers Club will hold a fashion show at 10:30 a.m. July 19 at the Menifee Lakes Country Club.

Organizers say club members as well as guests are welcome to attend the show.

The fashions will be provided by Macy's in cooperation with Eileen Fisher. A luncheon will also be served.

The cost is $17 and check-in time for the event is 10:30 a.m. The country club is at 29875 Menifee Lakes Drive.

Elks members meet weekly

TEMECULA ---- Members of Temecula Valley Elks Lodge No. 2801 meet on Tuesday evenings at the Diaz Road lodge.

On the first, third and fourth week of each month, a dinner is held at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. On the second and fifth Tuesday of the month, a dinner is held for family members and guests.

Chess club meets regularly

MURRIETA ---- A new United States Chess Federation-approved chess club meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at a home in Murrieta.

Chess players of all levels are invited. The club now has almost 40 members, with more than half of them children ages 6 to 16. One-third of the members are professional USCF-rated players.

Club activities include casual play, club tournaments and USCF-rated tournaments. Chess books and DVDs are available for club members.

On Saturdays, chess classes are taught from 3 to 6 p.m. with an advanced teaching method using new digital technology.

Elks recognize middle school students

TEMECULA ---- Temecula Valley Elks recently awarded dozens of middle school students in an annual Student of the Year recognition.

Middle schools in Temecula and Murrieta were asked to submit applications for three girls and three boys, including an essay stating why the student should be chosen. The Elks recognized 84 winners and runners-up, judging students on their academic achievement, citizenship and involvement in school and leadership activities. The winners received a $50 savings bond, and all received a certificate and a medal, plus a coupon from Chick-fil-A restaurant.

The winners and runners up from each school are:

-- Bella Vista: Rachel Bushrow and Quinn Casey won and Kylie Hanebrink, Marissa Yzaguiree, Samuel Irvin and Imran Habib were runners-up.

-- Calvary Murrieta: Brittany Bither and Josiah Nauert won and Kezia Cunalata, Shelby Stiefel, Garrett Hayden and Kevin Oh were runners-up.

Past president installed to state board

Sonya K. Matthies, past president of the Elsinore Woman's Club and the De Anza District was installed as Area D Vice President for General Federation of Women's Clubs/California Federation of Women's Clubs on May 14 at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco Airport.

Matthies previously served as the recording secretary on the 2008-2010 board.

The "Golden Bear" Award was presented to Matthies at the meeting for her efforts in merging the two clubs in Area D ---- The Sun City Woman's Club and the Menifee Woman's Club merged to become the GFWC Menifee Woman's Club.
