RBHS students win Emmy Awards

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Regional Occupational Program students from Rancho Bernardo High School recently won three Student Emmy Awards from the National Television Academy regional competition. Jason Skiano, Jermaine Jackson, Jason Yeh, John Pratt and Nathan Fisher submitted work from their ROP digital media class and caught the eye of the judges.

The regional Student Emmy Awards recognize students in seven categories, three of which were won by RBHS students. As a producer for "RB Underground," a segment from Rancho Bernardo High's Bronco Magazine, Skiano won the Emmy in the category "Arts & Entertainment, Cultural Affairs." Jackson, Yeh and Pratt were awarded for their public service announcement "Save a Tree" in the category "Hubbard Family Public Affairs/Community Service/Public Service." In the "Sports" category, Pratt and Fisher took home a Student Emmy for their March 2006 sports segment in Bronco Magazine.

Rancho Bernardo High School's ROP offers students hands-on experience in arts and media classes, including digital media production, computer graphic arts, photo processing/photography, and screen printing and design. For information on ROP, go to http://www.sdcoe.net/rop.

RBHS students to perform concerts

RANCHO BERNARDO -- Musical groups from the Rancho Bernardo High School Music Program will perform the following concerts:

- The Concert Bands perform at 7:30 p.m. May 23 in the RBHS Performing Arts Center, 13010 Paseo Lucido, Rancho Bernardo. Free.

- The Orchestra will perform its spring concert at 7 p.m. May 24 at the Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. Free.

- The Wind Ensemble and Combined Concert Bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 31 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. Tickets cost $9.50; $5 for seniors and students. For tickets, e-mail Laurie Allen at lallen@rbhsmusic.org.

- The Orchestra will perform a concerto concert at 7 p.m. June 5 in the RBHS Performing Arts Center. Free.

- The Wind Ensemble will perform its final concert of the year at 7:30 p.m. June 12 in the RBHS Performing Arts Center. Free.

'West Side Story' performances set

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Church at Rancho Bernardo's Extreme Broadway theater program will present the musical "West Side Story" at 7 p.m. May 31 and June 1, 7 and 8 at the church, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court.

PHS choirs to perform spring concert

POWAY -- Poway High School's award-winning choirs will present their annual spring concert, "Spirit & Soul," at 7 p.m. June 7 and 8 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

The concert will feature the music of Motown with gospel and black spiritual selections. Familiar songs with choreography will include songs by the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and other favorites from the 1960s.

Tickets cost $5 and are available by mail. Order forms can be downloaded from the PHS Choir Web page at http://www.pusd.info/teachers/ngray/default.htm. Some tickets may be available at the door the night of the concert.

Theater arts camp offered

RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court, will offer a theater arts camp for students in first through eighth grade from 8:30 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays, July 16 through 27.

Classes offered will include dance, puppetry, tumbling, musical theater, etiquette, voice and set design. There also will be a special musical review performance at the end of the camp.

Young Artists Symphony concert set

ESCONDIDO -- The Young Artists Symphony, conducted by Mary Gerard, will perform at 1 p.m. June 2 in the Center Theater at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. The program will include works by Dvorak, Ravel, Copeland, Shostakovich and Stravinsky.

YAS includes young musicians from throughout the county. Students ages 12 to 22 will be featured in this final concert of the season. Also performing will be the Fiddle 'n' Bow Orchestra (the YAS preparatory orchestra).
