FALLBROOK - The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County installed officers and new directors for the 2007-08 year at its July board meeting.

Installed as officers were:

Kent Borsch, president; Mary Mack, first vice president; Jack Rockwell, second vice president; Donna Reisbeck-Stoewer, secretary; Mike Boman, treasurer.

New directors installed for two-year terms were: Tracey Moe, CRC Health Group Inc.; Doug Woods, auto dealer; Kelly O'Donnell, Temecula Valley Bank; Mark Fabela, Coldwell Banker; Patrick Marelly, Loan Warehouse.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County is a nonprofit organization. Its mission is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring adults

Methods used to achieve this mission include activities in:

  • education and career development.
  • the arts.
  • health and life skills.
  • sports, fitness and recreation.

During the school year the club reaches more than 700 children through its program activities.

Knitting group to meet

FALLBROOK - The Senior Knit Wits will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 at the Fallbrook Senior Center, 399 Heald Lane to continue with their ongoing project of knitting many items for the families of the Marines serving overseas. Members are urged to attend and bring their projects to "show and tell." Donations of yarn and needles are welcome. Drop them off at the senior center. Call (760) 728-9074.

Fashion show to benefit library

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Eastern Star members will sponsor a fashion show to benefit the Fallbrook Library Building Fund from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Masonic Lodge at 203 Rockycrest Road. The show will feature fashions by Donna's Unique Boutique of Fallbrook. The event will feature luncheon, the fashion show and door prizes. Birding hike set for Aug. 11

FALLBROOK - The Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, located between Temecula and Fallbrook, will host its first-ever birding hike from 6 to 10 a.m. Aug. 11. The tour will be led a professional bird monitor who will help hikers identify birds by sight and sound. A docent also will be on hand to orient hikers to the reserve environment from its natural history to research programs.

This hike requires moderate to strenuous physical activity. Bring good boots, water and binoculars. A $10 donation is suggested to support the docent program. Hikes have a 12-person limit. Contact Spring Strahm at (760) 728-9446 for reservations, directions and further information.

Booksigning set at art gallery

FALLBROOK - Author Rebecca Farnbach, accompanied by local historian Margaret Ray, will sign copies of her book "Images of America: Fallbrook" from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 10 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Brandon Gallery. Farnbach will discuss the photos in the book.

Many of the images were donated by the Fallbrook Historical Society and from pioneer families of the valley. Others are intended to be reminders of happy hours spent barefoot on a tricycle or wading in De Luz Creek, churning homemade ice cream, proudly showing garden produce or putting on a play at school.

This is Farnbach's third "Images of America" book published by Arcadia Publishing. She co-authored similar books about Temecula and Murrieta with Loretta Barnett and Marvin Curran.

Post polio group to meet Aug. 14

ESCONDIDO - The North County Post Polio Group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway, in the Joslyn Senior Center complex.

Dr. Bradley Schnierow will present "Sleep Disorders and Chronic Pain," discussing sleep disorders and pain from post polio syndrome, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Schnierow is a specialist who is board certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, as well as the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is an assistant clinical professor at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, director of the UCSD Sleep Disorder program and a staff physician at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

Senior Anglers to meet Aug. 17

ESCONDIDO - The Senior Anglers of Escondido will meet at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave. Members of the U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary will present a program on boating safety, marine environmental pollution awareness and the auxiliary.

The Senior Anglers will take a trip to Silver Lake and the surrounding lakes in September for a week of fishing.

Berkley Hart to give benefit concert

ELFIN FOREST - The duo of Berkley Hart will perform at The Escondido Creek Conservancy's sixth annual "Concerts on the Creek" benefit program at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 in an outdoor setting at a ranch in Elfin Forest.

Asian-inspired gourd art will be on display

VALLEY CENTER - Asian-inspired gourd art made by members of the Fallbrook Gourd Patch will be on display from Aug. 11 through the end of September at the Valley Center Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.

'Healthy Living' program on tap

ESCONDIDO - In preparation for "Healthy Aging" month, Palomar Pomerado Health will bring preventive health information to the community from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 16 in Graybill Auditorium at the Palomar Medical Center, 555 E. Valley Parkway.

The free "Healthy Living, Test Your Knowledge" event will examine participants' knowledge on common health threats, while providing information on preventive measures toward cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes.

North County Idol deadline is Aug. 11

RB club names Rotarian of the Year

RANCHO BERNARDO - The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club has named Paul Sullivan as its Rotarian of the Year.

Sullivan is chairman of the club's Membership Committee, and under his stewardship over the past year, the club has grown by 20 new members.

Sullivan is chief financial officer of the YMCA of San Diego County. He and his wife, LeAnn, have three sons ages 18, 23 and 25.

Sewing club to meet Aug. 11 and 15

Course explores prime time TV history

O'side Library system closed Aug. 10

OCEANSIDE - The entire Oceanside Public Library system will be closed for a Staff Development Day on Aug. 10, as part of the library's Strategic Plan for 2007. Facilities affected include the Civic Center Library, Mission Branch Library, Community Computer Center and the Oceanside READS Literacy Center. In addition, both library bookmobiles will not be in service that day. Normal service hours will resume Aug. 11. Grace Chapel screens Friday films

OCEANSIDE - Grace Chapel of the Coast runs family-friendly films the first Friday of each month at 7 p.m. The old Crest Theater is now occupied by Grace Chapel and the facility boasts one of the largest screens in all of San Diego County, located at 102 N. VFW holds shrimp boil

VISTA - VFW Post 7041 will hold a Low Country Shrimp Boil from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at the post at 1717 E. Vista Way, Suite 117. Vista holds leadership academy

VISTA - The city of Vista will host its first Citizens' Leadership Academy starting this September. The free program is designed to give citizens an insider's view of their local government and to build a stronger relationship between the city and the community.

The program will run for eight weeks starting Sept. 20 to Nov. 8, on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., with the exception of one lunchtime meeting on Sept. 27. The first class will be held at Vista City Hall, 600 Eucalyptus Ave., with subsequent classes at various locations like Wildwood Community Center, the Vista Library, Vista Fire Station No. 1 and the county jail in Vista.

The academy's curriculum will discuss important issues like public safety, development, traffic, growth and finances. Participants will learn how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated and how city departments operate. They will also meet city council members, department heads and staff, as well as tour city facilities and development projects.

Tournament benefits Casa de Amparo

VISTA - The eighth annual Fore the Children Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 20 at Vista Valley Country Club to benefit Casa de Amparo, an Oceanside nonprofit organization providing child abuse prevention and treatment services throughout San Diego County.

League looking for volleyball coach

OCEANSIDE - The U.S. Youth Volleyball League is looking for a volleyball instructor for its Oceanside site. Applicants must be able to work well with youths and have played or coached volleyball at high school, club or college level. The instructor will demonstrate volleyball skills, help set up volleyball drills and run game days. Time requirement is Sept. 12 to Nov. 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays.

The USYVL is an instructional league that operates in a coed format for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. The organization's mission is to provide every child with a chance to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, supervised, low-pressure environment.
