North San Diego County School News Briefs: 'Art Mania' planned at St. Patrick

CARLSBAD - St. Patrick Parish School will host its third annual art show, Art Mania, a showcase of kindergarten through eighth-grade student artwork, May 19 through 22 at the St. Patrick Church Parish Center, 3281 Adams Ave.

With almost 500 pieces on exhibit, visitors will enjoy many applications of art elements, with each work chosen by the children from their yearlong portfolio.

Most of the art pieces were created through Arts Attackâ (CQ), a program developed by a local Encinitas artist for kindergarten through eighth-grade schools. The program is an educational tutorial of all the basic elements of art supplemented by video instruction, and leads children through the elements of art and principals of design.

Exhibit hours are 4 to 7 p.m. May 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 20 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated to help foster art education and appreciation. The exhibit was made possible because of donations received at last year's exhibit.

Winston School plans arts festival

DEL MAR - The Winston School will hold its annual Festival of the Arts fundraiser from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 19 on campus, 215 Ninth St. Showcasing student talent in music, drama, sculpting, painting, computer graphics and other fields, the event will benefit technology and arts programs for the learning disabled at the school. A silent auction, carnival games and food also will be featured. Admission to the event is free.

Grauer open house planned

ENCINITAS - The Grauer School will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. May 20 to highlight its middle school program and new campus at 1500 S. El Camino Real. Guests will learn about the school's middle school curriculum, meet middle school teachers and preview middle school camps and courses; as well as enjoy ice cream, live music and art. The event is designed for parents and children who are prospective sixth-graders for fall 2007, but is open to the entire community. For more information, call (7600 944-6777.

Vista resident is college dancer

Kathleen Whalley of Vista, a sophomore musical theater major at Illinois Wesleyan's School of Theatre Arts, recently danced in "Under Construction," a dance concert featuring dances by five choreographers. The show was performed April 10 through 15 in the McPherson Theatre in Bloomington, Ill.

"Under Construction" presented dances ranging from ballet to hip hop, and explored themes including love, violence, oppression, comfort and community.

European trip planned

CARLSBAD - T.R. and C.R. Robinson, anthropology and sociology instructors at Carlsbad High School, are signing students up for a trip to the most beautiful cities in Europe during the summer of 2008. The trip will include stops in Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Heidelberg. Optional stops in Potsdam and a Danube river trip also will be offered. Local student is top scholar

CARLSBAD - James Curry, a student at La Costa Canyon High School, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. Formed in 2002, the society recognizes only the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. Membership entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.

St. Francis plans golf tournament

The annual St. Francis Parish Charity Golf Tournament will be held on June 18 at the Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos. Tee time is 1 p.m. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a day of fun that benefits the children of the St. Francis Parish community. Early bird players are $105, and a team of four is $400 before June 4. Tournament fees include a pre-tournament lunch, 18 holes of golf, participation in hole-in-one contests, post tournament hors d' oeuvres reception and an evening prime rib dinner.

Del Mar resident earns honor

Lindsay Blodgett of Del Mar, a member of the class of 2010 at Dartmouth College, has been cited for outstanding academic achievement in her study of biology during the winter 2007 term. She is the daughter of Edward and Betsy Blodgett. Members of the Dartmouth faculty are invited to submit citation reports only when a student is sufficiently distinguished to merit special recognition. Such citations are rare, and usually only a few undergraduates receive them each term.

College admission seminar set

CARMEL VALLEY - The Carmel Valley Community Park and Recreation Center will offer a college admission seminar this summer. The five-day sessions are designed for upcoming 12th-graders getting ready for the college admission process.

Topics to be covered include finding the "right fit" when looking for colleges, how to write a resume and highlight community service and extracurricular activities, writing essays and how to organize the senior year month by month.

The first session will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 18 through 22. The second session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 through 10. Cost is $175 per session for residents of Carmel Valley and $195 for nonresidents. Registration begins May 5 at the Carmel Valley Community and Recreation Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive. Event to benefit Sanderling school

Sanderling Waldorf, a nonprofit school based in Cardiff, will hold its annual silent auction event at 11:30 a.m. May 20, at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Internationally recognized soprano Marguerite Krull will headline entertainment and executive chef Mark Kropczynski will prepare brunch for attendees.

The brunch will feature two entree stations and a variety of pastries, scones and other selections. Silent auction and raffle items will include a day of pampering at La Costa Spa, a series of classes at the Ashtanga Yoga Center, a drum lesson and signed CDs from Sha Na Na drummer Paul Kinbarow, massages, gift baskets and gift certificates.

Cost to attend the fundraiser is $60. Tables for 10 also may be purchased. For reservations, call the school at (760) 635-3747.

The event will raise funds for the continued growth of this unique, fledgling, nonprofit school, which fosters the education of the "whole child." The Waldorf educational system, which originated in Europe in the 1920s, is dedicated to providing alternative approaches to traditional education while maintaining high academic standards. The curriculum includes art, music, movement and languages. The school offers classes from kindergarten through third grade, with plans to continue its expansion to grades K-8.

OGHS music department awards banquet on tap

ESCONDIDO - The Orange Glen High School Music Department will hold its awards banquet at 6 p.m. May 18 in the Performing Arts Center on campus, 2200 Glenridge Road. Dinner tickets cost $13 and are available at the OGHS cashier.

Del Dios students compete at science fair

ESCONDIDO - Fourteen students from Del Dios Middle School in Escondido were invited to compete at the recent Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. The following seventh- and eighth-graders received awards: Chandra Lukes, first place; Miguel Zuniga, Victor Murillo and Allyson Jochims, second place; Thesalie Dumlao, Michelle Hamed, Stephanie Hernandez, Cynthia Hernandez, Andria Mendoza, Victoria Moreno and Benancio Pineda, third place; and Robert Laguna, Lucero Martinez and Hilda Sotelo, fourth place. Chandra Lukes qualified to compete this month at the California State Science Fair.

Read-A-Thon held

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - Students at Rolling Hills Elementary School took part in a Read-A-Thon March 5 through 9, reading a total of 84,803 pages during the event, organized by the Rolling Hills PTA.

Because of the remarkable reading rate, corporate partners Shea Homes and Harcourt Children's Books donated $2,500 to the PTA, which will invest the money in programs that are valuable to Rolling Hills, but are not included in the school district budget. More than 85 percent of the approximately 400 Rolling Hills students participated in the event by recording the pages they read and turning in reading logs signed by their parents. Eight classrooms had 100 percent participation, which earned them coupons for free ice cream donated by the Carmel Mountain Ranch Baskin Robbins.

Ramona High class of '57 to reunite

Ramona High's Class of 1957 will hold its 50th reunion buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Ramona Outdoor Community Center. A picnic for all Ramona High alumni will follow on the next day at the same location. Fallbrook 4-H Swine Club sponsoring kiss a pig contest

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook 4-H Swine Club members are urging people to vote for local restaurant owners to kiss a pig as a fundraiser they are sponsoring in conjunction with the youth fair taking place May 19 and 20 at the high school. Money raised will be used toward expenses they incur when they show their pigs at this year's San Diego County Fair. - Participating restaurant owners are Dave Odom, Fallbrook Cafe; Delos Eyer, La Caseta Mexican Restaurant; Tim White, Little Caesar's; and Alan Bonaguro, Sweet Leilanis. Tickets are available at each of the restaurants, and are $1 each. The restaurant owner who receives the most votes by the time of the contest will get to kiss the pig. The kiss a pig contest will take place at approximately 3 p.m. May 20 as part of the awards presentations.

4-H Club plans pancake breakfast

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook 4-H club will have a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 19 and 20 at the Fallbrook High School Ag Department. This event will coincide with the annual Youth Fair taking place at the same location. Breakfast will be $5 will benefit the club's Relay for Life team. This team will join other teams from Fallbrook to raise money for the American Cancer Society taking place from 10 a.m. June 2 to 10 a.m. June 3 at Fallbrook High School.

Fallbrook ag department to hold plant sale

FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook High School Agriculture Department will have a plant sale May 19 and 20 during its annual youth fair. The sale will feature bedding plants, shrubs, trees, perennial color, ground cover and house plants, along with a special set of "Certified Organic Vegetables and Herbs" donated by a local nursery.

Old ink cartridges sought

FALLBROOK -Kopa Literary Magazine is a club that meets weekly at Fallbrook High School. Each year the club produces a publication comprised of student art, poetry and short stories. To help supplement the cost of publication, the Kopa team is recycling old ink cartridges with a company by the name of Empties4cash. Anyone with empty or unwanted ink cartridges can contact the editors with the information given below and they will provide pick-up at any convenient time. St. Peter's plans art show

FALLBROOK - St. Peter's Catholic School will hold an art show fundraiser from May 17 through 20. The show will highlight the work of the children attending St. Peter's school as well as include a variety of pieces displayed by local artists. From 8:30 a.m. to noon May 20, the public is invited to attend the show.

There will be a dessert reception hosted by the Lace Apron as well as an opportunity to meet the artists and participate in a raffle drawing for a personal lesson with one of the featured local artists. On May 17, families whose children attend the school are invited to the show from 6 to 7 p.m. The morning of May 18 will be "Grandparents' Day" for which the show will be open until noon. Sponsors of this event include The School of the Arts, The Lace Apron, Roadside Advertising, and Major Market.
