Scouts plan car wash for Saturday

WILDOMAR -- Scouts from Wildomar are planning two car washes this Saturday.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 332 will be putting their rags to use from 10 to 2 p.m. at the VFW, 21180 Waite St. this Saturday as well as July 25. Boys interested in joining Scouts can get information at the car wash.

Meanwhile, members of Boy Scout Troop 332 will be cleaning cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grease Monkey, 32120 Clinton Keith Road. The cost of a car wash will range from $6 to $9 and will include hand drying by the Scouts.

Money raised from both washes will help send Scouts to camp.

Annual jazz festival kicks off

TEMECULA -- The sixth annual Temecula Valley International Jazz Festival will feature a bebop competition as well as well-known jazz artists.

The lineup for the three-day festival that starts Friday includes Poncho Sanchez, Alex Ligterwood, Richie Cole, Allison Adams Tucker, Patricia Talem and others.

Tickets cost $25 and concerts will be in the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main St.

Store to host band battle

MURRIETA -- 16 Underground is looking for bands to register for its inaugural Battle of the Bands, which is set for 6 p.m. Saturday.

Brandee Waldon, the store's owner, said she's looking for the best bands in the area to sign up for the event. The store sells designer clothes for juniors for $16 or less.

Hip Trigger to play in Murrieta

MURRIETA -- The local band Hip Trigger, a classic and contemporary rock band, will be featured Saturday as part of the Murrieta Concerts in the Park series.

The free outdoor concert series runs from 6 to 8 p.m. every other Saturday through Sept. 12 at Town Square Park, 24700 Adams Ave., behind the library.

Hip Trigger will perform a wide collection of family-appropriate rock classics from a variety of eras and genres.

Tack swap meet set for Saturday

TEMECULA -- The Rancho California Arabian Horse Association will hold a swap-a-rama in conjunction with its annual barbecue on Saturday at Green Acres Ranch.

Horse lovers are encouraged to clean out their tack room and rent a space to sell their used items for $20. Vendors of new or used items also are welcome. Buyers can find a great deal on a piece of tack or show clothes.

The tri-tip and chicken barbecue costs $15 for adults or $20 at the door. The meal for children 10 and younger costs $10 or $15 at the door.

Tourney to benefit local man

HEMET -- A golf tournament planned for Sunday will raise money for chemotherapy for a local man.

A 1 p.m. shotgun start is planned for the Bobby's Journey Golf Tournament, which will be at Seven Hills Golf Club in Hemet.

The money will benefit Bobby McDonald, a 44-year-old man who was diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma.

The cost is $70 a player and includes a Mexican banquet dinner, which will start about 6 p.m. The cost for the dinner alone is $20.

Temecula Valley People Helping People is organizing the tournament. The nonprofit organization assists those in need in Southwest County.

Knitting club to meet at library

MURRIETA -- The Murrieta Public Library's Knitting Club will meet at 4 p.m Monday in the library's community room.

Instructor Peggy Hagberg will be available to assist beginner and advanced knitters with their projects.

The knitting club meets the second Monday of the month and is open to anyone 14 or older. Attendees are encouraged to bring their projects and must provide their own needles and yarn. There is no cost to attend.

Student art activity planned

MURRIETA -- Children can discover their inner Picasso during an art activity set for Tuesday at the Murrieta Public Library.

Participants will learn to see art in a new way as they use different magazine cutouts, scissors and glue to create their own work.

The activity is geared toward students in third through fifth grades.

Promenade kicks off concert series

TEMECULA -- The Promenade mall in Temecula will kick off its annual summer concert series on July 17.

The first event will feature the music of Sebastian Sidi, who was born in Uruguay and performs classical, rock and progressive music.

Future concerts will showcase Hot Rod Lincoln on July 24, Habo Jazz on July 31, C.G. Ryche on Aug. 7 and Duo Tones on Aug. 14.

The concerts take place in the mall's plaza, which features seating and an interactive fountain. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Drop-in games offered

LAKE ELSINORE -- The Lake Community Center is offering a new drop-in program featuring old-style games including kickball, badminton, dodge ball, floor hockey and indoor soccer.

The cost is $1 per player and participants must be at least 16. The games will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays and will be supervised by staff members at the community center, which is at 310 W. Graham Ave.

Free class offered for cancer patients

Women undergoing cancer treatment can bet a free boost of self-esteem through the "Look Good … Feel Better" program offered by the American Cancer Society.

The free classes are taught by volunteers who are beauty professionals and certified cosmetologists. The program offers beauty tips to cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. The makeup and health tips for skin, nails and hair can help restore the patient's appearance and self-confidence.

Small groups of six to 10 women are led by a volunteer cosmetologist using practical, hands-on experience. The program also features wigs, turbans and scarves, if available, as options for those who are experiencing hair loss. Each participant receives a free cosmetics kit for use during and after the workshop.

The classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at 3rd District Supervisor Jeff Stone's office, 29995 Evans Road, Suite 103, Sun City, and from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Sunwest Village, 1085 Sunwest Drive in Hemet.

Blood drives set next week

Three blood drives are scheduled in Temecula this week.

The drives will be held from:

- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kohl's, 32085 Redhawk Parkway

- 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at Pat & Oscar's, 29375 Rancho California Road

- 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Henry's Marketplace, 40408 Winchester Road

Donors must be 16 years old, healthy and weigh at least 110 pounds; the process takes about an hour.

Children's support group to meet

MURRIETA -- Michelle's Place, the Women's Breast Cancer Resource Center, will host Kids Konnected, a monthly support group for children 5 to 18 who have a parent with cancer.

Seniors group schedules trips

TEMECULA -- Seniors' Golden Years of Temecula Valley is planning several excursions over the next couple of months.

On July 23, participants will be off to the Del Mar Races and lunch. The cost is $61.

On Aug. 15, the group will gather for lunch and to take in a production of "Fiddler on the Roof." The cost is $68.

Future trips include Laughlin/Riverside from Aug. 19 to 21 and a day trip to the Pala Casino on Sept. 10.

Group plans concert on July 18

TEMECULA -- Seniors Golden Years of Temecula Valley is sponsoring a concert at 6 p.m. on July 18.

The featured entertainer will be Sally Anne Bachmann and dessert will be served after the performance.

The concert will be at the Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St. in Temecula. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the center.
