Senior computer class to graduate
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Senior Citizens Club will graduate its current class June 15. New classes begin June 22. Classes contain no more than six students and feature 18 hours of instruction. ROP classes being offered
FALLBROOK -- Computer classes being offered through the Regional Occupational Program will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning the week of June 21 at Fallbrook Union High School at 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane. The classes are for people who know little about the computer applications Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Students will learn these applications and how to use the Internet. Dog obedience classes offered
FALLBROOK -- Dog obedience classes will be offered from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays from June 26 through July 31 or Aug. 28 through Oct. 2 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.
The class provides training for dogs and puppies 12 weeks and older. The first class will be indoor instruction in a classroom and people should not bring their dogs. Fee is $55 for the six-week session. Call (760) 728-1671.
Class of 1969 plans 35th reunion
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Union High School Class of 1969 will have its 35th reunion July 16 through 18 at the Pala Casino Resort and Spa. Activities include an ice breaker July 16, brunch, golf, cocktail party and dinner dance July 17, and a farewell brunch July 18.

Skatepark reopens
ENCINITAS -- The grand reopening of the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA skatepark is set for 1 p.m. today and will include the dedication of a new vert ramp, which was acquired and donated by Target.
Shaun White, the Carlsbad native who is one of the nation's top snowboarders and skateboarders, and BMX pro Mat Hoffman will host the event. There will be a demonstration by top pro skateboarders and BMX riders, an autograph signing session and a silent auction featuring items donated by the athletes. There will also be an open skate session for YMCA members.
The renovated 33,000-square-foot park features two new concrete bowls, including a clover bowl and a kidney bowl, and a 15,000 square foot-street course and vert ramp.
Boys & Girls Clubs name winners
CARLSBAD -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation recently awarded 25 Leonard & Edith Polster Scholarships to area youngsters at the Olympic Resort and Spa at a dinner hosted by the Polsters.

The Polsters, Rancho Santa Fe residents, established the Scholarship Program in 1988, "to give something back to the community." To date, more than 400 students in the San Dieguito, Carlsbad and Oceanside high school districts have received financial support totaling over $500,000 for their college education -- an award program supported entirely by the Polsters.

Cottonwood Creek Park dedicated
ENCINITAS -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicating the Cottonwood Creek Park is scheduled for 3 p.m. June 14 at 95 N. Vulcan Avenue.
The park, measuring more than eight acres, features three observation decks, two pedestrian bridges and picnic facilities around the Cottonwood creekbeds.
There are also two half-basketball courts, two tennis courts, a climbing rock, restrooms and a large open turf area. At the southwest corner of the park, there is an eight-foot high veteran's memorial of red mountain sandstone.

Charity golf tournament set
ENCINITAS -- The Hi-Noon Rotary Club of Carlsbad will host its first Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course on June 15. The registration fee, $150 per person/$600 per foursome, includes cart, green fees, awards banquet, range balls and goodie bag. Funds raised will provide college scholarships for deserving students.
The tournament will feature a best ball, team scramble format. Awards will be given for low gross, low net, high gross, closest to the pin, longest drive and putting contest.

Jazz concert series offered
CARLSBAD -- The free annual TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert series will kick off at Carlsbad's Stagecoach Park from 6 to 8 p.m. June 18 and feature The Braxton Brothers. Twins Wayne and Newton blend what they call "twin ESP" into their vivid, feel-good, contemporary jazz.
Eleven TGIF concerts will be held in Carlsbad parks through August and are presented by the city's Cultural Arts Office. Take bus trip to see Vatican exhibit at museum
ESCONDIDO -- Take a trip to see the exhibition "Saint Peter and the Vatican: The Legacy of the Popes" at the San Diego Museum of Art. The Escondido Arts Partnership will host a bus trip to the museum from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 10.
The exhibition will include the Vatican's unique collections of art and historical objects, some dating back to the third century. Works by Michelangelo, Bernini, Canova and others will be on view. The exhibition represents the largest Vatican collection to ever tour North America.
Tickets cost $45 and $40 for EAP members. Cost includes transportation, continental breakfast, admission to the exhibition, self-guided audio tour, box lunch and free time to explore Balboa Park.

'Getting There' art exhibit to open
ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Arts Partnership will host its juried exhibition, "Getting There," from June 17 through July 23, at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 142 W. Grand Ave. "Getting There" represents artists' literal or metaphoric interpretation of how they went from where they were to where they are.
There were 137 pieces submitted for the exhibition. Juror Rachel Teagle, assistant curator for the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, selected 51 pieces to be included in the show.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 19. Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m.

Harrah's to help rebuild landscape
VALLEY CENTER -- Harrah's Rincon Casino & Resort and the Rincon Indian Tribe have announced the launch of the "Harrah's Rincon Re-Leaf Effort," which will present 300 local families who were affected by the 2003 fires with plants and Lowe's gift certificates to help re-landscape their property. Local Valley Center firefighters who battled the blaze, as well as government officials, will help kick off the program at 10:30 a.m. June 17 during the topping-off ceremony for the hotel tower expansion.
Tennis program for youths set

Walk to benefit HIV/AIDS patients

Rotary Freedom Ride on tap
RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club will sponsor its third annual Freedom Ride from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12. Join the anticipated 100 motorcycles and convertible cars for a 50-mile ride through North County's back country. Proceeds will benefit children's and club charitable programs.
Preregistration fees are $25 for the rider/vehicle and $20 per passenger. On the day of the event, fees will cost an additional $5. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Dance recital, workshops planned
RAMONA -- The Ramona Council of Arts, Unlimited, will present its annual dance recital at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at Olive Peirce Middle School Performing Arts Center. This year's recital is titled "It's Delightful, It's Delicious, It's DeLovely." Admission is free.

Summer reading program to begin
POWAY --- The "Read for the Gold" reading program will run from June 19 to Aug. 7 for preschoolers through teens who will be entering the 12th grade this fall.
Participants are encouraged to read a certain number of books and record information about what they read. They will receive incentive awards for their achievements.

Dance workshop for youths offered
SAN MARCOS -- New West Ballet School will offer a dance workshop for children who want to sample different styles of dance from July 26 through 30 at the school, 968 Rancheros Drive, Suite W. The workshop will have a "Cinderella" theme and will include a presentation at the end of the week.
Classes will include ballet, jazz, tap and creative movement. Two age groups are available: ages 4 through 6, and 7 through 9. Classes will begin at 9:30 a.m. and finish in the early afternoon. SAN MARCOS -- The city offers West Coast Swing classes for adults. A beginners class is held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive. The next start date is June 23.
An intermediate class is held at 7 p.m. Mondays at The Barn in Walnut Grove Park, followed by an intermediate-advanced class at 8. The next start date is June 21.

City offers Jazzercise classes
SAN MARCOS -- The city offers ongoing Jazzercise classes at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
Classes, which are 60 to 65 minutes in length, begin with a warm-up, then continue with about nine aerobic routines, including Top 40, jazz, country, funk and classics. Classes are held at 4:45 and 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Cost is $8 for walk-ins and $88 for an eight-week class pass. New-student packages are available.
Child care is available for all classes at $1.50 per child and 50 cents for each additional child.

Vista Boys & Girls Club offers day camps
VISTA -- Day camps will be offered this summer at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Camps will operate from June 14 through Aug. 17. Day camp hours will start at 7 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. at which time the club will return to its traditional programming until 6:30 p.m. Cost is $50 per week or $35 for a minimum of three days a week per child, payable in advance. Additional children per family may attend at the reduced rate of $45 per sibling per week; no credits or substitutions allowed. Attendance is limited to 200 youths. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and additional weeks may be reserved with a $10 nonrefundable deposit per child per week. Limited scholarships are available. Low-cost insurance available for children
VISTA -- The Vista Community Clinic is offering parents of uninsured children assistance enrolling in Healthy Families, a low-cost government-funded program that provides comprehensive health coverage for eligible families in California. The program provides children one full year of complete medical, prescription, hospital, dental and vision coverage for a low monthly premium. To qualify, a family of four must have an annual income of between $18,000 and $46,000. Children must be under the age of 19 and may not qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal. Vista senior center programs available
VISTA -- The Gloria E. McClellan Senior Center, at 1400 Vale Terrace in Brengle Terrace Park, offers "one-stop shopping" for area seniors. Senior Center programs include the office of the Vista Senior Citizens Inc., and all of its programs, Saturday bingo games, Vista's popular senior trip program, "Culture Caravan," the "Out & About Vista" transportation program and the Nutrition Transportation Program. Church offers Safe Harbor program

Allstate gives grants to two nonprofits
OCEANSIDE -- The Allstate Foundation has provided $5,000 in grants to two Oceanside nonprofit organizations, the Joe & Mary Mottino Family YMCA and the Brother Benno Foundation, in memory of former Allstate sales manager Ron Alexander, who passed away Feb. 11 from leukemia. Funds to the YMCA will be used to conduct the first annual YMCA Ron Alexander "Splash" program, a national program that teaches youths ages 1 to 12 and their parents how to be safe around water. The program will be offered free and includes bus transportation. Funds to Brother Benno's will be applied toward anger management and financial training for participants in the residential drug and alcohol program.
Meals-On-Wheels seeks volunteers

'Last Chance' hike scheduled
VISTA -- Preserve Calavera will sponsor a hike of special areas that will soon be lost to development from 9 to 11 a.m. June 12. Hike starts at the dead-end of Faraday by Brookhaven Pass in the Shadowridge area of Vista. Thomas Guide page 1127, H1. From Interstate 5, take Palomar Airport Road east, left on Business Park, left on Sycamore, left on South Melrose and right on Faraday to the end. Hikers will hike a riparian area with 200-year-old coast live oak trees, coastal sage scrub and rock formations, and into a canyon where mountain lion scat has been found. Grant-writing workshop upcoming
OCEANSIDE -- How to write a winning grant proposal will be the subject of an upcoming workshop, Grant Writing Basics, to be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26, in Room 3102 at MiraCosta College, One Barnard Drive.
Offered through MiraCosta's Community Services Program, this workshop is aimed at directors, organizers, board members, volunteers and other individuals who are interested in getting an overview of the grant writing process. Topics include basic elements of a grant, types of funding available and tips from a judge's perspective.
