- A discussion and booksigning will be held at 7 p.m. July 19 with Marlise Elizabeth Kast, author of "Tabloid Prodigy."

- A Harry Potter Midnight Magic Party will be held starting at 8 p.m. July 20. When the clock strikes 12:01, the book store will begin to sell the last book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The party also will feature games and photo shots with a Harry Potter standee.

Museum to host John Wayne look-alike

VALLEY CENTER - A John Wayne celebrity impersonator will appear at the official opening of a centennial tribute to the late movie star from 1 to 4 p.m. July 21 at the Valley Center History Museum.

The John Wayne look-alike is a Valley Center resident who goes by the name Stan D and who regularly appears at film festivals, Western shows and fairs.

The museum has created an exhibition recalling the days when John Wayne lived, shopped and rode horses in the Valley Center-Pauma Valley area. It is timed to remember the 100th anniversary of his birth. The display includes personal memorabilia, mementos and photos.

Intermediate manga art classes to begin

ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Arts Partnership will host intermediate manga art classes led by award-winning illustrator Crystal Hawkins from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, July 21 and Aug. 4 through Sept. 1, at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 142 W. Grand Ave. Manga is the Japanese comic book version of amine.

Classes are for ages 12 and older; no experience is required. Bring paper, pencils and erasers. Cost is $35 per class; $180 for all six classes. To register, stop by the gallery or call (760) 480-4101.

V-Day book event planned

ESCONDIDO - A V-Day: Reclaiming Peace 2007 book event will be held at 7 p.m. July 21 at the Metaphor Cafe, 258 E. Second Ave. The event will feature readings about violence against women from Eve Ensler's book, "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and a Prayer," followed by a question-and-answer session.

Suggested donation is $10; food and drinks cost extra. Proceeds will benefit the Center for Community Solutions.

V-Day events are intended to create awareness of violence toward women and to raise money for local organizations working to end it.

Church to re-create 'Galilee by the Sea'

ESCONDIDO - Explore authentic marketplace shops to see, hear, touch and even taste what life was like in Bible times as Escondido Church of the Nazarene turns its campus into a seaside village for its summer family ministry, "Galilee by the Sea."

The summer family ministry will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 23 through 27 at the church, 1555 S. Redwood St. A preview night will take place at 5:30 p.m. July 22 to watch the village take shape and register for the week. There is no registration fee.

Take a hike at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO - Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.

All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a quart of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance unless otherwise noted.

- 9 a.m. July 22: Naturalist Rick Paul will lead an occasionally-strenuous four-mile hike to see a diverse plant population and expansive views. Meet at Cougar Pass parking lot.

- 4 p.m. July 26: Naturalist DJ Summers will lead an easy, one-hour hike for parents and their children, followed by a craft for the kids to make at the Jack Creek Picnic area.

- 7:30 a.m. July 28: Naturalist Don Parnell will lead a sometimes strenuous, 11-mile physical workout hike over many trails on the ranch. The hike will take about five hours, including two breaks. Parnell will also point out significant flora and fauna.

- 8:30 a.m. July 28: Naturalist Jack Pomeroy will lead a moderately strenuous, 4.5-mile roundtrip hike and talk about the red-diamond rattlesnake, Southern California earthquakes and common native plants.

- 3 p.m. July 29: Naturalist and biologist Carol Stanford will talk about the plants and animals of Daley Ranch on a moderately-strenuous, 3.5-mile hike on Boulder Loop Trail.

OASIS classes set for seniors

Special effects makeup program set

RANCHO PENASQUITOS - The Rancho Penasquitos Library, 13330 Salmon River Road, will host a free special effects makeup program for teens with theatrical makeup artist Christine Friel at 4 p.m. July 23. This program is part of the 2007 Summer Reading Program called "Get a Clue @ Your Library" and is appropriate for ages 11 to 18. Registration is not required.

During the demonstration, Friel will create realistic wounds using latex and stage blood. She will also create glittering fairies, elaborate cats and believable beards.

Healthy cooking class offered

POWAY - The Diabetes Health Department at Palomar Pomerado Health will sponsor a class titled "It's a Wrap! Healthy Cooking Using Lettuce and Tortilla Wraps" from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. July 25 in Meeting Room D on the third floor of Pomerado Hospital, 15615 Pomerado Road.

The class will offer healthy wrap recipes, cooking tips and advice on low-fat and low-sugar creative cooking.

Library Friends donate prizes for adult reading program

POWAY - The Friends of the Poway Library has donated $500 in gift cards from local businesses as prizes for the Poway Library's summer reading program for adults, "Summer Sleuthing @ Your Library."

Adults who read five books by Aug. 4 will be entered into an opportunity drawing for prizes, including the $25 and $50 denomination gift cards donated by the Friends, plus gift certificates to other Poway businesses.

All adults who sign up for the program will receive a San Diego County Library pen and a coupon for a free paperback book from the Friends' Book Store, as well as other prizes when they complete two and four books. Those who complete five books will receive a travel mug and will be entered into both the Poway Library's opportunity drawing and the San Diego County Library's grand-prize drawing for a $40 gift card from Westfield shopping centers. Readers who write reviews of the books they have read will have one additional chance at the drawings for each review.

SAN MARCOS - The city and the INDEPENDant Players have announced their "Shakespeare Under the Moon" performance schedule. The Los Angeles-based troupe of actors will present "Romeo and Juliet" on July 21 and "Julius Caesar" on July 22 in the gardens of the Wood House in Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Road. Both performances will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Hike, raptor program planned

SAN MARCOS - The city's Community Services Department will sponsor a summer interpretive hike and program Aug. 4 at Jack's Pond Park, 984 La Moree Road.

At 10 a.m., participants can take an optional short hike around the park and to Jack's Pond to identify birds. At 11 a.m., Nancy Conney from Sky Hunters Raptor Education and Rehabilitation will present an informative lecture and will be accompanied by live birds of prey. Bring binoculars; some children's binoculars will be available.

The program is recommended for ages 5 and older. An adult must accompany all minors. Wearing walking shoes is recommended.

Exercise is focus of women's health luncheon

CARMEL MOUNTAIN RANCH - Palomar Pomerado Health and the American Heart Association will present "Move It! Staying Healthy Through Exercise" from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, 14050 Carmel Ridge Road. The event is part of the heart association's "Women In Health" luncheon series sponsored by PPH.

Dr. Elizabeth Salado will deliver the luncheon presentation, and a Palomar Pomerado Health physical therapist will demonstrate and lead guests through some simple yet effective exercises that women and men can do at home.

Knitters Guild to meet July 23

Fallbrook has big win in June senior cribbage match

FALLBROOK - After losing the May Senior Challenge Cribbage match, the Fallbrook team rebounded with a big win on June 28. Fallbrook won 73 games to Oceanside's 61 wins in the 38-player match.

Ed Wozniak, Fallbrook, won all seven games with two skunks to take first place. Second and third places went to Fallbrook peggers Frank Cardiff with six wins and two skunks followed by Woody Wood with six wins and no skunks. The next five places belonged to Marty Hess, Eileen Haworth, Lois Ash, Chuck Grow and Nancy Jacobson, who all had five wins with a skunk.

The $25 gift card donated by the Ralph's Grocery on Old Grove Road in Oceanside was won by Carl Troupe.

The matches are held on the fourth Thursday of the month and consist of seven games. The next match will be held July 26 at the Vista Elks Lodge 1947 E. Vista Way. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. Play begins at 12:30 p.m.

Art gallery prepares for chair event

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook's Brandon Gallery is gearing up for the "Art of the Chair," an event scheduled for Sept. 15 featuring painted chairs by Brandon Gallery and community artists as well as guest artists Rich Stergulz, Jack Ragland and Gabriele Baber.

For the event, vintage and newer chairs are transformed into fine art pieces by the artists and will be showcased throughout August and early September in the windows of local businesses along Main, Alvarado and Hawthorne Streets.

A "Where's This Chair?" hunt will take participants on a journey through local shops to identify their favorite among the beautiful and whimsical chairs and vie for a chance to win prizes. Everyone will have the opportunity to bid on their favorite chairs at the silent auction Sept. 15 at the Brandon Gallery at 105 N. Main St. Brandon Gallery is a nonprofit branch of the Fallbrook Village Association. The event will include prizes, food, music, a daytime silent auction and an evening live auction where bidders can vie for some of the most celebrated chairs. The event will raise money for the Brandon Gallery.

The schedule is:

- 2 p.m.: Children's painted chair recognition event, Village Square, Main and Alvarado.

- 2 to 5 p.m., silent auction, with silent auction winners announced at 5 p.m.

- 5:30 to 6 p.m.: Live auction viewing and reception.

- 6 p.m.: Live auction of "Favorite Chairs," featuring local dignitaries, live music and a gourmet reception.

Bottom Shelf plans summer sale

FALLBROOK - The Bottom Shelf bookstore will hold a "Midsummer Madness" sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21, with all merchandise half-price. There is a selection of hard-cover and paperback fiction, biographies and history, cooking and craft books, children's books plus audio books, CDs, videos, sheet music and a select assortment of magazines. All proceeds from this sale will go to the new library building fund.

The bookstore, located on the lower level of the Library at 124 S. Mission Road, is operated by Friends of the Fallbrook Library and volunteers are always needed. Information forms are available at the store.

Donations of materials that are clean and in good condition are welcome. Sets of encyclopedias, Reader's Digest books, collections of National Geographic magazines and records are no longer accepted. The bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Call (760) 728-3835.

Martial arts camp planned

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Martial Arts will do an Olympic-themed summer camp from Aug. 6 through 10 at its facility at 113 S. Main St. The camp will include speakers, taekwondo fun and Olympic games at Live Oak Park on Aug. 10. Daily snacks and lunches will be provided. Women's support group meets

BONSALL - A.S.A.P. (Always Say A Prayer) is Riverview Evangelical Free Church's support group for women with chemically dependent family members. The group meets from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the church, and is beginning a new study called "Boundaries." This study is intended to help with Biblically-based answers to questions. Workout location changes

FALLBROOK - Due to the closure of the Fallbrook High School track, the location of the Wednesday evening workout for the Fallbrook Walking and Running Club has been changed to the Los Jilgueros Preserve, also known as the Dog Park. The preserve is located just north of the high school on South Mission Road. Members will meet at 6 p.m. in the preserve parking lot. Members also will continue with their Saturday workouts starting at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Fallbrook Library. Light refreshments will be served.

The starting time and location for the Sunday morning workout for the Fallbrook Walking and Running Club has changed. Meet at 6:45 a.m. at Sandia Creek Park. Take De Luz/Pico Road from E. Mission Road for about two miles. At the bottom of the hill, turn right on Sandia Creek Road. Go about one mile to the Sandia Creek parking lot on the right-hand side just before crossing Sandia Creek. Walkers will enjoy the shaded hiking trail.
