SAN MARCOS - Cal State San Marcos will hold a Video in the Community Screening and Partners Celebration at 7 p.m. today in Arts Building Room 111 on campus, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road. The event will feature screenings of student videos produced for local nonprofit and community groups.

Quilt and craft festival on tap

DEL MAR - The Del Mar Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through May 12 in Bing Crosby Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

The event will feature a variety of sewing, quilting, needle-art and craft supply exhibits from many quality companies, plus "Make and Take" workshops and free seminars.

Press Club to mark 25 years

RANCHO BERNARDO - The Press Club of North San Diego County will celebrate its 25th anniversary at its next meeting set for 10:15 a.m. May 11 at the Remington Club Phase II, 16916 Hierba Drive.

The event will feature live entertainment, food and cake. All are welcome; admission is free.

Special Olympics event set

SAN MARCOS - The Human Development Program at Cal State San Marcos will host a Special Olympics bocce ball tournament demonstration from 9 a.m. to noon May 12 at the Clarke Field House on campus, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road.

There also will be opportunities to try a variety of other Special Olympics sports. The event is free and open to people of all disability levels. Volunteers and coaches also are needed. No experience is required.

Letter Carriers Food Drive set

The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct its 15th annual nationwide Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 12.

Area residents can participate by leaving a bag of nonperishable food items by their mailboxes to be picked up by their letter carriers. No glass items.

The donations will go to a local food bank or pantry.

Sale to benefit girls soccer team

VISTA - The Vista Storm Girls Soccer Team (ages 10 and younger) will hold a rummage sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 12 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 651 Eucalyptus Ave. Items for sale will include clothing, toys, books, furniture, household items and more.

Brain Injury Foundation to hold meeting

ENCINITAS - The San Diego Brain Injury Foundation will sponsor a meeting for brain injury survivors, their families and professionals from 10 a.m. to noon May 12 in the conference center at Scripps Hospital Encinitas, 354 Santa Fe Drive.

Patsy Sholders, a brain injury survivor and past president of the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, will speak on "Life After a Brain Injury."

Sons of American Revolution to meet

Y-ME's Walk to Empower set for May 13

SAN DIEGO - The Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization will hold its third annual San Diego Walk to Empower, a three-mile noncompetitive walk, at 9 a.m. May 13, Mother's Day, at Mariner's Point at Mission Bay Park.

Palomar Handweavers to meet

ESCONDIDO - The Palomar Handweavers Guild will meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon May 14 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut St.

Deborah McLintock will present "Ladies of Laos," a slide show presentation about the weaving methods practiced in the province of Hua Phan in Northern Laos. Following the meeting, McLintock will conduct a Laos Mini Workshop. Cost for the workshop is $45.

Women's group invites new members

SAN MARCOS - The Contemporary Women of North County, a nonprofit women's volunteer organization, will meet May 14 at the Wood House in Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Road. Social time will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6:30.

The group is seeking new members to help with its ongoing charitable projects, including Operation Top Knot, which involves collecting baby goods and clothing for new mothers whose husbands are deployed military personnel, and assisting with fundraising events for Casa de Amparo, a local shelter for abused and neglected children.

SD Community HousingWorks to present awards

OCEANSIDE - San Diego Community HousingWorks will present its fifth annual VALOR Awards at a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 17 at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 N. Coast Highway.

The organization will recognize the contributions of five Junior Leader volunteer youths with academic scholarships and honor one adult and one youth as volunteers of the year.

The scholarship award recipients are selected from among the youth residents who volunteer as Junior Leaders within the affordable housing complexes developed by Community HousingWorks. Junior Leaders mentor elementary schoolchildren in the Learning Communities after-school program.

This year's VALOR Scholarship Award recipients are Alheli Balbuena, a senior at Fallbrook High School; Mahamoud Kunj, a senior at Poway High School; Maria Bitanga, a student at San Diego State University; Mohammad Sarwar, a senior at El Capitan High School; and Monica Lopez, a student at Southwestern College.

Adult Volunteer of the Year nominees are Jose Jimenez, Crown Heights, Oceanside; Dario Aguilar, Crown Heights, Oceanside; Ana Aguilar, Crown Heights, Oceanside; Ruth Bach, San Diego, Home Ownership Center; and Deborah Walker, Los Robles, Vista.

Youth Volunteer of the Year nominees are Karen Gutierrez, Las Serenas, San Diego; Abigail Oropeza, Park View Terrace, Poway; Maryan Osman, Bandar Salaam, City Heights; and Ellen Morris, La Costa Paloma, Carlsbad.

Poker Run to benefit military families

NORTH COUNTY - Biggs Harley Davidson and Clint August of Rock 105.3 will present the fifth annual Support the Troops Poker Run and After-party on May 19.

The Poker Run will begin with registration, a free pancake breakfast and live music from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Biggs San Marcos, 717 Center Drive; and end with lunch, drinks, demo rides, raffles, a bikini contest, vendors, live music by the General Lee Band and more from noon to 3 p.m. at Biggs Oceanside, 1555 S. Coast Highway.

Cost to participate is $20 for riders and $5 for passengers. Proceeds will go to Homefront San Diego to assist families of deployed military personnel.

Italian-American club plans dinner-dance

ESCONDIDO - The Italian-American Social Club will host a May Flower Dinner-Dance at 5 p.m. May 20 at Resurrection Church Hall, 1445 Conway Drive.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and will include pasta, chicken, salad, bread, soft drinks, champagne punch, wine, coffee and dessert. Dance music will be provided by the Phil Antony Band.

Brooklyn College alumni to meet

The speaker/guest of honor will be professor Arthur Bankoff, chairman of anthropology and archaeology at Brooklyn College.
