The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society will sponsor its annual Genealogy and History Fair from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Community Room at the Temecula Public Library.
Among the organizations participating in the free event will be the Temecula Valley Historical Society, Temecula Valley Museum, Vail Ranch Restoration Association and Temecula Valley Genealogical Society.
Experts in the fields of British, Swedish, Hispanic and U.S. genealogy will be in attendance to assist people who would like to get started on family research. Computer stations will be set up to show how to access various helpful Web sites and photo restoration, scrapbooking and memory book companies will show visitors how to enhance their research work.
The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society also recently presented the President Award to Marvin Melton and recognized Barbara Russell with a Lifetime Membership in the society.
Two books are being donated to the genealogy section of the Temecula Public Library in Melton's name, recognizing his outstanding service to the society.
Russell was one of the original members and on the board of directors when the society was formed in 1998. She has seen the society grow to a membership of 171.

Actor to speak to women's club
TEMECULA - Actor Hugh O'Brian will speak when the Temecula Valley Woman's Club meets at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 at Temeku Golf and Country Club.
In 1958, O'Brian spent nine days with Albert Schweitzer at his clinic in Africa. Schweitzer's belief that the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves impressed O'Brian, who formed the Hugh O' Brian Youth Foundation.
Its format is to bring a select group of high school sophomores with demonstrated leadership abilities together with a group of leaders in business, education, government and the professions and let the two interact.
The Temecula Valley Woman's Club sponsors sophomores from Temecula high schools at a HOBY Leadership Seminar each spring.
O'Brian, known for portraying Wyatt Earp, along with his brother, Don Krampe, of Murrieta, will congratulate this year's HOBY scholarship winners at the meeting.
The cost of the luncheon is $16. Beverage service only is $2.

Movie star to play in tourney
TEMECULA - Fraternity brothers Will Ferrell and Craig Pollard have traveled different paths in life, but on Sept. 28, they will reunite at Temecula Creek Inn for Cancer for College's 14th annual charity golf tournament.
Cancer for College, created by Pollard, a two-time survivor of Hodgkin's disease, was established in 1993 to provide college scholarships to current and former cancer patients. Ferrell, star of such movies as "Old School" and "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," will participate.
As part of the tournament, an online auction is under way for a chance to meet Ferrell at the golf course and appear as an extra in his movie, "Step Brother," which will film next month. The auction is open until Sept. 26. The high bid was at $20,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

TEMECULA - A golf tournament benefitting Our Nicholas Foundation will be held Sept. 29 at Temecula Creek Inn.
Driving to Beat Autism will include a cocktail hour, reception, dinner, awards and an auction. Proceeds from the foundation go to Temecula Valley Unified School District, Autism Speaks and Cure Autism Now.

Adventure Guides starting season
Southwest Family YMCA is starting off a new season of the Adventure Guides. The program, formerly known as Indian Guides and Indian Princesses, gives fathers a chance to spend quality time with their children.
