Art workshops offered
FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook School of the Arts & Foundry presents Art Projects Workshops for ages 8 and older from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the last Saturday of each month. The next workshop will be Sept. 27.
Taught by Yvonne Gaudet, the workshops will focus on a new project each month. Traditional media, including paint, ink, pastels, pencils and markers, as well as less conventional materials, such as mosaics, fibers, modeling clay, wood and organics, are used.

'Mudslingers' classes planned
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook School of the Arts & Foundry will offer "Mudslingers" ceramics classes for youths this fall.
Classes for ages 5 to 7 will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays, Sept. 12-Oct. 10. Classes for ages 8 to 14 will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sep. 10-Oct. 8.
Students will explore ceramics through hand-building and free-form techniques. Ceramic artist Jo Sebern's goal for students to develop their artistic ability and enjoy working with clay, resulting in several finished projects.

Middle school plans arts and crafts fair
OCEANSIDE -- Chavez Middle School, 202 Oleander St., will hold Art on Chavez, an arts and crafts fair and community bazaar, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 18. Youths can enter calendar art contest
NORTH COUNTY -- Forward Movement Youth Outreach is holding its annual Calendar Graffiti Art Contest.
This year's theme is "I Have a Dream." The contest is open to North County youths ages 12 to 18. Judges will select 13 winners based on the theme, creativity and originality. Winners will have their art featured in Forward Movement's 2009 Calendar and receive cash or gift prizes. Entries must be received or postmarked by Nov. 21.

Children's acting classes to begin

Oceanside Dance Academy to hold recital
OCEANSIDE -- Oceanside Dance Academy will present "All the Right Moves," its 18th annual recital, at 2 and 7 p.m. Sept. 13 and 1 and 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Truax Theatre at El Camino High School, 400 Rancho del Oro Drive.
Students will perform a variety of dances in hip-hop, jazz, contemporary lyrical, tap and hula. There also will be ballet selections from the movie "Center Stage," "Paquita" and the Broadway musical "Cats."

VHS band plans Rehearse-a-thon
VISTA -- The Vista High School Regimental Band and Pageantry Corps will hold its annual Rehearse-a-thon from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 13 at Dick Haines Stadium on campus, 1 Panther Way.
At Rehearse-a-thon, band and pageantry members work on marching drills and music for the fall series of band tournaments. The event also is an opportunity to raise money for their band-related expenses, such as fees and trip expenses, including for a 10-day performance tour to England and Scotland this spring.
The Vista High Band Boosters, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, is also raising money to buy new uniforms, pit carts and a truck and trailer for the band.

'Into the Woods' performances set
ESCONDIDO -- Broadway Theatre Arts Academy's youth-cast production of the fractured fairy tale "Into the Woods" continues with performances at 8 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13 at the Kit Carson Park Amphitheater, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway.
The double-cast musical production includes young talent from Escondido, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Valley Center, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Cardiff, Encinitas and surrounding communities.

Theatre in the Park to perform 'The Hobbit'
POWAY -- Theatre in the Park, sponsored by the city of Poway and the Poway Woman's Club, will present the play version of "The Hobbit" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 and 2 p.m. Sept. 14 in Templars Hall at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
The cast is made up of children ages 10 to 14. In "The Hobbit," Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon, Smaug.

'Papel Picado' class offered
RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- The Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library, 13330 Salmon River Road, will offer a free class on "Papel Picado -- Mexican Art of Papercutting" from 10:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 13.
Papel Picado is a traditional folk art used in Mexico to create colorful and intricate decorations for tables, windows, ceilings, altars and banners for outdoor festivals.

SD Youth Philharmonic has openings
4S RANCH -- High school musicians are invited to join the San Diego Youth Philharmonic. There are openings in the string, brass, woodwind and percussion sections. Rehearsals will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 10 in the music room at Oak Valley Middle School, 16055 Winecreek Road.

Music programs offered
RANCHO SANTA FE -- The Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias, offers free musical programs for youths in third grade through high school. Students do not have to be church members to participate.
The Village Cherub Choir, for children age 3 through third grade, meets from 5:15-6 p.m. Thursdays, followed by dinner and "Mozart Math," which teaches math and music theory concepts using classical music. The only requirements are consistent attendance and a once-a-month Sunday morning commitment.
The Village Junior Choir, for second- through sixth-graders, meets from 6-7 p.m. Thursdays. The choir sings in worship once a month, performs for outreach activities and presents two musicals each year.
The CrossWinds Youth Choir, for seventh- through 12th-graders, meets from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sundays. The group sings in worship monthly and performs for outreach activities regularly. Students can receive school community service credit. In June, CrossWinds will travel to Washington, D.C., to sing in a choir festival at the National Cathedral. Scholarships are available for the trip.

Abrakadoodle classes offered
FALLBROOK -- New Abrakadoodle classes for toddlers and preschoolers will begin Sept. 15 at the Fallbrook School of the Arts.
"My First Art Class," for children 20 months to 3 years, will be held from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 15-Oct. 27, session one; Mondays, Nov. 3-Dec. 15, session two. Children will take part in painting, gluing, sticking and printing while developing fine motor, language and self-help skills. Cost is $78 per session, materials included.
"Lil' Art Explorers," for ages 3 to 5, will introduce a new artist or technique each session. Classes will be held from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 15-Oct. 13, session one; Nov. 3-Dec. 15, session two. Cost is $78 per session, materials included.
In "Let's Go Green," for ages 7 and older, students will use recyclable materials and their imaginations to staple, hammer, glue, glitter, paint and make collage artwork. Children will be encouraged to collect recyclables from home to bring to class. Classes will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 6-27. Cost is $75 per session.

'Guys and Dolls Jr.' auditions set
SAN DIEGO -- The Joan B. Kroc School of Performing Arts, 6805 University Ave., will hold auditions by appointment for "Guys and Dolls Jr." from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 16.
Besides several featured roles, the musical has several singing and dancing ensembles. Auditioners should prepare a one-minute segment of a song, and bring sheet music or a CD for accompaniment. Youths ages 4 to 19 are welcome to audition. Callbacks will be Sept. 18; rehearsals will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; performances will be Dec. 10-14.

Studio offers voice classes

Pine needle basketry class offered
ENCINITAS -- The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will offer an Introduction to Pine Needle basketry class for ages 11 and older from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive.
Carol Lang will teach students to use local natural materials, transforming yard waste into functional vessels.
Cost is $60; $55 for museum members. An additional $10 materials and preparation fee will be paid directly to the teacher at the beginning of the class. Bring sharp scissors.

'Seussical' auditions planned
ESCONDIDO -- Center Stage Productions will hold auditions for ages 6-18 for a youth-cast production of "Seussical" from 3-8 p.m. Sept. 16 in the auditorium at L.R. Green School, 3115 Las Palmas Ave.
Auditioners should be accompanied by a parent, come prepared to sing for one minute, and bring a cued accompaniment tape or CD and a current resume. Callbacks will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the same location.
Rehearsals will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 23, with a break during the holidays. Performances are scheduled for March 13-15 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
Registration fee is $250 through Sept. 9; $275 thereafter. Sibling discounts available; financial aid information available upon request.
