Retired teachers group to meet

FALLBROOK —— The Fallbrook Retired Teachers will gather for brunch at 9 a.m. March 9 at Fallbrook Golf Club, 2757 Gird Road. The Sullivan Middle School Show Choir of Bonsall, under the direction of Stacy Sharpe, will present three of their competition routines. Sullivan Principal John Hickman will be a guest. Vacation day camp being offered

FALLBROOK —— A holiday day camp will be offered from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 25 through 31 and April 1 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.

It will feature sports, games, arts and crafts, movies and popcorn. Children should bring a morning snack and a sack lunch. Cost is $17 per child per day and pre-registration is required. Call (760) 728-1671.

Easter egg hunt, breakfast planned

FALLBROOK —— The annual Fallbrook community Easter egg hunt and pancake breakfast will take place March 26 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.

The Fallbrook Firefighters will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Cost is $3.50 for adults; $2 for children 12 and younger. The egg hunt and games begin at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded. The Easter bunny will visit. For information, call (760) 728-1671.

Health fair scheduled

FALLBROOK —— The fourth annual Celebrate Your Health Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 12 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.

There will be free screenings for diabetes, blood pressure, vision, bone density and body fat. There will be healthy snacks and information about nutrition and fitness. There will be raffle prizes. Sponsors are the Fallbrook Healthcare District, Fallbrook Village Rotary and San Diego County Parks and Recreation.

Spring garage sale set

Circus coming to Fallbrook

FALLBROOK —— The American Crown Circus will perform at 5 and 7 p.m. April 2 and 3 at the corner of Heald Lane and Fallbrook Street. It will feature clowns, jugglers, high wire acts, the Wheel of Death and Spiderman.

Tickets are $8 for everyone 13 and older, free for children 12 and younger in advance; $9 for everyone 13 and older, $5 for children 12 and younger the day of the show. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Fallbrook Community Center.

Dog walk planned

FALLBROOK —— The Friends of Los Jilgueros Preserve and Underdog Rescue will sponsor the second Tails on Trails Dog Walk March 5 at the Los Jilgueros Preserve. The preserve is on Mission Road just past the high school. Parking is available at South Mission and Peppertree Lane.

Proceeds will benefit the activities of Underdog Rescue and provide funds for the upkeep and enhancement of Los Jilgueros Preserve. Underdog Rescue provides services for lost, abandoned and surrendered animals.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Walkers are encouraged to obtain pledges. Forms are available at local businesses including Coldwell Banker Landmark Group offices. Prizes will be available for various levels as follows:

  • Beagle: $30, photo of walker with pet and T-shirt.
  • Dalmatian: $75, doggie gift bag, framed photo of walker with pet and T-shirt.
  • Great Dane: $150, supply of Advantage or Frontline, doggie gift bag, framed photo of walker with pet and T-shirt.

Lenten fish fries planned

FALLBROOK —— St. Peter's Knights of Columbus chapter will present its annual Lenten fish fries from 5 to 7 p.m. every Friday through March 18 in the church hall at 450 S. Stage Coach Lane. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children. Everyone is welcome.

Fire Safe Council to host seminar

DEER SPRINGS —— The Deer Springs Fire Safe Council will conduct its first neighborhood seminar of the year for the residents of the Deer Springs Fire District. It will be held Feb. 28 at the Deer Springs Oaks Meeting Room and again March 1 at the Deer Springs Fire Station No. 1, 8709 Circle R Drive. both sessions will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Fire Capt. Dick Gardner will conduct the seminar, covering topics such as how 911 works; roles of a paramedic and an EMT; what to expect when help arrives; Vials of Life; treatment of burns, fractures and sprains; recognizing airway obstruction, bleeding and shock; identifying the three types of bleeding; and medical hygiene.

NCT to host community meeting

ESCONDIDO —— Community members who want to learn more about the North County Times and how to get news into the paper are invited to a gathering March 5 at the Escondido Public Library.

The session will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the Turrentine Room at the library, 239 S. Kalmia St. Editor Kent Davy and other key editors will share tips on how the newsroom functions, as well as who are the best contacts for getting stories into the paper.

First Monday Film series continues

ESCONDIDO —— The Escondido Public Library will present "A Man For All Seasons" at its First Monday Film series at 6:30 p.m. March 7 in the library's Turrentine Room, 239 S. Kalmia St. Admission is free. The film adaptation of a Robert Bolt play on Sir Thomas More was the 1966 winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Community film enthusiast Richard Dell'Orfano will continue in the role of moderator and will lead a discussion following the film. In addition, a presentation by a member of the San Diego chapter of the Saint Thomas More Society will accompany the film. Gourd art class planned

ESCONDIDO —— The Baiamonte Gourd Farm will offer a gourd art class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 12. Learn how to properly handle and clean gourds, cut intricate details, clean the inside of the gourd and seal the outside, strengthen weak walls and use and apply stains to the gourd. Women's Connection to meet March 16

CPR/AED 'Heartsaver Course' planned

ESCONDIDO —— The Palomar Family YMCA will offer an American Heart Association "Heartsaver Course" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 12 and again April 9, May 14 and June 11 at the YMCA, 1050 N. Broadway.

Individuals ages 10 and older can learn adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation and how to use an automated external defibrillator. The program meets California teaching credential requirements and participants can earn a two-year certificate upon completion of the course.

Cost is $40 and $30 for members for CPR only; and $48 and $40 for members for both CPR and AED training. There is an additional $3 fee for day-care licensing. The class is not for health care providers. To register, call (760) 745-7490 or visit the YMCA.

Income tax help offered

ESCONDIDO —— Seniors and middle- to low-income people can get help with income tax preparation at no cost from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays through April 15. Bereavement group to meet

Helpers needed for Y-ME breast cancer walk

ESCONDIDO —— The San Diego affiliate of Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization is looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of developing the first Walk to Empower set for Mother's Day, May 8, at Mission Bay.

Volunteer duties include office work such as conducting follow-up phone calls on in-kind sponsorships and invitees to special events and creating information kits. The office is at 254 E. EHS class of 1955 to host reunion

ESCONDIDO —— The Escondido High School class of 1955 will hold its 50-year reunion at 5:30 p.m. May 13 at the Escondido Country Club. The class is scheduled to be introduced the next day, May 14, at the annual Escondido Union High School 50-Plus Picnic in Felicita Park.

Del Mar TV program scheduled

DEL MAR —— The Del Mar TV Foundation will present a 30-minute television show highlighting the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito's Big 8 Middle School sports program, "Middle School Sports Magic." It will air Feb. 28 and March 7 at 10:30 a.m., and March 4 at 5:30 p.m. on Del Mar TV and Adelphia Cable channel 66.

The program, produced by Tracy Phillips, features former Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Boy of the Year and current Mighty 1090 radio personality John Kentera, and San Diego Charger Hall of Fame member Doug Wilkerson as co-hosts. In addition, other sports notables will be featured including NFL alum John Allred, NBA alum Jud Buechler, world-class and Olympic volleyball player Mary Jo Peppler, wrestling coach Darren Cooley and field hockey coach Kim Elmore. The DVD of the show will be made available for purchase in March from both the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and the Del Mar TV Foundation.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito operates the Big 8 Sports Conference, which provides competition for more than 1,200 student athletes in the San Dieguito Union High School District. The four middle schools, Carmel Valley, Diegueno, Earl Warren and Oak Crest, will be joined by provisional members Valley Middle School and Rancho Santa Fe in selected sports. This will be the second year the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito has operated the Middle School Sports program since taking it over from the district in September, 2003.

The Del Mar TV Foundation is a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting Del Mar's Public Access Television station. Its main focus is to provide programming, communication, education, training and historical archiving for Del Mar and its surrounding communities. Gallery exhibit slated

SOLANA BEACH —— The City Hall Gallery is now featuring the work of Sherry Krulle-Beaton through March 2. The gallery is located at 635 South Highway 101. Organic textural paintings by Krulle-Beaton now decorate the Gallery walls creating a sense of motion for the viewer. With her background in classical art and realistic drawing, Krulle-Beaton's recent work has evolved over time to more abstract renderings. Her paintings interpret and depict nature in an emotional sense.

The public is invited to visit the City Hall Gallery to see this provocative painting exhibition. Previous shows have included everything from watercolors and photographs to recycled metal sculpture, children's art and surfboards. Artists must submit examples of their work to the Public Arts Advisory Committee for approval to exhibit in the Gallery. The City Hall Gallery is open to the public during regular business hours. Library events planned

RANCHO SANTA FE —— The Rancho Santa Fe Branch of the San Diego County Library, 17040 Avenida de Acacias, will be holding a series of programs in honor of National Women's History Month. The library will feature a Women's History display throughout March. In addition, at 11 a.m. March 2, the library will host a preschool storytime featuring Dr. Seuss books. Preschool storytimes are presented on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. A Cesar Chavez display will visit the library from March 29 through March 31. ENCINITAS —— Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea-Library will present First Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 2 at 2081 Newcastle Ave., between Birmingham and Liverpool. In honor of National Women's History Month the library will feature, "Women That Made a Difference in History." Speaker Judith Josephson will discuss significant women including former Encinitas resident Ida Noonan. In 1893, when she was just 8 years old, Noonan escaped from her burning home on the dazzling sweep of headlands above Swami's Beach. Eventually, she grew up to become Ida Noonan Truax, a prominent North County resident and a teacher with five children of her own. Surfing instruction offered

ENCINITAS —— Enjoy fun weekends with safe, hands-on surfing instruction at the Eli Howard Surf School. The three-to-one student-to-instructor ratio allows students, ages 6 to adult, learn to surf with complete ocean awareness. Enjoy the coast with families, couples and friends. 'Tribute to FAME' concert set

CARLSBAD —— Middle school and high school honor bands from the San Dieguito Union High School District will perform a "Tribute to FAME Concert" in honor of the Foundation to Advance Music Education at 7 p.m. March 5 at La Costa Canyon High School's Performing Arts Center. The concert is open to the public, and will be performed by honor bands selected from schools throughout the district. Admission is free. The foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports music education in San Dieguito area public schools. For the past eight years, the foundation has donated more than $250,000 to support band, orchestra and choral music programs in the San Dieguito district and its feeder elementary districts in Cardiff, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach.

PFLAG meeting slated

CARLSBAD —— Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), a parents-led support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. today at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ Church, 2020 Chestnut Ave. PFLAG invites all those having difficulties in understanding GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) issues, particularly when family relationships are disrupted. Arbor Day event planned

CARLSBAD —— Stay cool this summer and save money on the energy bill by planting a tree for California Arbor Day. The best news is the trees are free! The city of Carlsbad, San Diego Regional Energy Office (SDREO) and People for Trees will host an Arbor Day Tree Give-A-Way March 12 at Poinsettia Park, 660 Hidden Valley Road. The event is sponsored by SDREO's Cool Communities Shade Tree Program and open to local residents who register in advance and return their completed program application forms to SDREO by March 1. There are 20 varieties of trees to choose from and, depending on the size of the property, residents can get up to five, full-size, 15-gallon nursery-quality specimens. Bridal faire scheduled

Food distribution program available

POWAY —— Poway Share is a nonprofit, nondenominational food distribution program committed to building healthy families by providing affordable groceries. It is open to everyone and has no income or age requirements. The prepackaged groceries are first-quality food items, not donated items or government surplus.

Participants are asked to pay for their March packages by March 4. Cash or checks may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays at the Poway Senior Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive.

Online payments via PayPal will be accepted through March 3 at www.members.cox.net/poway.share.

Packages can be picked up between 8 and 9 a.m. March 19 at the Poway Senior Center. Participants also can pay for April's food package at that time.

Library to hold bookmark contest

POWAY —— The Poway branch of the San Diego County Library will hold its Summer Reading Bookmark Contest from March 1 through 30. Youths in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to enter for the chance to have the bookmark they created made into a professional bookmark. Entries must be on a Poway Library Bookmark Contest entry form and reflect this year's theme, "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds." Forms are available at the library at 13137 Poway Road.

The winning bookmark will be used for professional bookmarks to be given out during the 2005 Poway Summer Reading Program. All entries will be displayed on the library's bulletin boards during March. Prizes will be awarded in April to first-, second- and third-place winners.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash, 'Read-in' on tap

POWAY —— The Poway branch of the San Diego County Library, 13137 Poway Road, will participate in the national Read Across America event celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. March 1.

Children will receive party bags and collect favors as they visit each of seven "Read-in" tables where they will be read to by community leaders and Poway celebrities. Afterward, the children will be treated to a party in the library's courtyard where they can enjoy birthday cake.

Welcome Club plans Anza-Borrego trip

RANCHO BERNARDO —— The Welcome Club of Rancho Bernardo and Surrounding Areas will hold its monthly luncheon March 17 at La Casa del Zorro, a four-star hotel and dining establishment in the heart of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

The bus tour leader and luncheon speaker will be Diana Lindsay, a desert naturalist, author and board member of the Anza-Borrego Foundation. At the luncheon, she will discuss naturalist Marshal South, famed author and poet who lived with his family on the waterless Ghost Mountain on the western edge of the desert for 17 years.

Town hall meeting to focus on public safety

Thousand mile project begins in Oceanside

OCEANSIDE —— The Highway 101 Association and the Oceanside's Transportation Department will paint 6-foot by 6-foot shields on the traffic lanes on Historic Highway 101 at 10 a.m. March 1 at Coast Highway at Wisconsin Avenue in both the north and south lanes. These inaugural signs will be the first of what will be a city by city effort to sign the rout along the entire West Coast. The association is attempting to brand the 101 using the historic shield and the state approved Historic Route signs. Generations have grown up cruising the 101 and the association hopes to reach them and to educate younger generations about the significance of the Historical Coast Road. Community CPR classes offered

OCEANSIDE —— The Oceanside Fire Department and Firefighters Association have scheduled more Community CPR Program classes for 5 to 8 p.m. March 7 and April 4. Fire Department personnel will teach the three-hour American Heart Association classes that will cover Adult and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Airway Obstruction. Organization receives $7,000 for at-risk youth program

From The Inside Out Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Oceanside, recently received a generous $7,000 grant award from San Diego-based Boys and Girls Foundation. From The Inside Out works with teens at risk for truancy, substance abuse, gang association and crime. Priscilla Alvarez, executive director and founder of FTIO, and volunteer staff at Donovan Correctional Facility take more than 1,400 youth and parents to the prison yearly. Incarcerated felons talk to youths about choices and consequences. Project Choice/CROP (Convicts Reaching Out to People) is hosted at the prison by inmates who want to give back to society by keeping kids out of prison and by using their own lives as examples.
