TEMECULA - Temecula 24-Hour Urgent Care is offering free X-ray screening of Halloween candy from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and Thursday. Employees will also be handing out toys.

Haunted houses

  • The annual Halloween Haunted House to benefit Canine Companions for Independence, 6 to 10 p.m., 31380 Gabriel Metsu in French Valley. A $1 donation is asked. Information, 479-8639.
  • Sal Cracchiolo will host the eighth annual hunted house from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at his Murrieta home.

The house will feature rooms and mazes through his garage, driveway and sections of the yard and features a scary clown room, a dark room, a bloody surgery clinic and rodent ramp.

Admission is free, although Cracchiolo will accept donations of canned food drive to benefit the Murrieta Food Bank of St. Martha's Catholic Church. A drop off box will be provided in the front yard.

  • The fifth Annual "A Season of Hell" haunted house will be held at a Murrieta home from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Said to be not for the weak or faint of heart, it features spine-chilling thrills around every corner.

Admission is free but donations will be accepted. The house is at 36215 Castellane Drive, off Clinton Keith and Toulon.

Lake Elsinore

Safe Candy Night will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Downtown Main Street. Children can kids trick-or-treat at local businesses. Information, 245-0442.

The Diamond

The inaugural Haunted Stadium will conclude at The Diamond from 7 to 10 p.m. Tortured souls and surprises will lurk in every corner, creators warn, adding that the haunt is not suitable for children younger than 10. The cost is $12. The Fun Zone will be in operation for younger children.

GOP groups hosts candidate forum

TEMECULA -- The Temecula chapter of the California Congress of Republicans will sponsor a candidate forum for Mt. San Jacinto College board candidates at 7 p.m. Thursday at Temeku Hills Country Club.

Incumbent Joan Sparkman and challenger Chris Pedersen, candidates in for District 5, have agreed to participate, organizers said. The district encompasses parts of Murrieta and Temecula.

'Old Salts' to meet

Shopping day benefits charities

LAKE ELSINORE - Lake Elsinore Outlets will help local nonprofit organizations to raise money and awareness for their causes at the center's fifth annual Shopping Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Participating charities are Bubel Aiken Foundation, Canine Support Teams, Inc., CASA for Riverside County, Corona Life Services, Hadassah, Inland Agency, Inland AIDS Project, Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Luiseno Elementary School, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County and of the Inland Empire, San Diego Blood Bank, Temecula Valley American Association of University Women, ThinkFirst and Valley Blood Services.

The shopping extravaganza features a catered lunch, wine sampling, an energy and pamper station, free gift bag, free gift wrap, free Santa photo, music, entries to the $500 shopping spree drawing and a raffle featuring $35,000 in prizes awarded throughout the day. Participants will receive a bag filled with retailer discounts, offers and promotional items.

Computer users to meet Saturday

TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Computer Users will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday for its annual meeting and a discussion about electronic gadgets.

Scouts to hold Girls Fest

RIVERSIDE - Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council are sponsoring GirlFest, a free community event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at California Baptist University.

The event is designed to introduce and inspire girls and their families to live a healthier life.

It will feature Ashley Argota, an actress and singer from American Girls Revue and the touring "Lion King," and recording artists Kandance Ferrel, Mishon Ratliff and Vanessa Jourdan, plus appearances by Erin Sanders, from Disney's "Zoey 101" and Christa B. Allen from CBS' "Cake."

Lions Club golf tourney upcoming

MURRIETA - Sponsors and golfers are needed for the second annual Murrieta Lions golf tournament Nov. 9 at the SCGA Members Club.

The tournament benefits community projects, including vision and hearing care, scholarships and large-print book donations to local libraries. The competition begins at 9 a.m., and the $85 entry fee includes golf, a cart, goody bags, hole-in-one contest and an awards lunch.

Military ball coming to base

CAMP PENDLETON -- Members of all branches of service are invited to the annual Military Ball Nov. 10 at Camp Pendleton, in celebration of the Marine Corps 232nd birthday.

Hockey club hosts golf tournament

MENIFEE - The Inland valley Wild Midget 16A Hockey Club will host its first golf tournament Nov. 12 at Menifee Lakes Country Club.

The four-person best ball tournament will begin at noon. The cost is $125 per golfer, including an awards dinner, or $25 for dinner only. The event will include raffle prizes and a silent auction. The deadline to register is Nov. 2.

Lions Club selling discount books

MURRIETA - The Murrieta Lions Club is selling 2008 discount books to raise funds for the club's sight conservation projects.

The books offer discounts on a host of restaurants, theaters, sports activities, special attractions and hotels. They will be on sale until December, for a cost of $20.

TEMECULA - Buddy Bowl, a nonprofit group that supports the recovery of military athletes disabled in the line of duty, recently received $2,500 from Pechanga Resort & Casino.

Buddy Bowl will be raising funds for military, law enforcement and children's-related charities at an annual flag football tournament on Nov. 24 at Camp Pendleton.

Play to benefit Invisible Children

LAKE ELSINORE - When Act 1 Theater Arts stages "Aida" this week, a portion of proceeds will go to the Invisible Children's organization, which brings awareness to the plight of the people caught in the Civil War in northern Uganda.

"Aida" will be staged Thursday to Sunday at Lakeside High School. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

College funding focus of workshops

MURRIETA - Workshops for parents of high school students on ways to fund a college education will be held Thursday and Saturday at the Murrieta Chamber of Commerce.

The workshop will cover things such as federal aid applications and descriptions of major student grants and loans. The workshops will be at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and 10:15 a.m. Saturday, at 24701 Madison Ave.

CPR classes set for Saturday

CPR and first aid classes will be offered in Temecula and Murrieta on Saturday.

Classes for adult, child and infant CPR and first aid will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mary Phillips Senior Center in Temecula.

Two-year certification cards will be issued upon completion of the classes. CPR and first aid can be taken together or as separate classes. Individual classes cost $35 and the combined class is $60, plus a materials fee of $15 or $20.

Pediatric first aid and CPR courses will be offered by the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Parent Center from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
