DAR luncheon to celebrate U.S. Constitution
Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a Proclamation each year by the President of the United States designating Sept. 17th through 23 as Constitution Week.
Sept. 17, 2003 is the 216th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America. It is the longest lasting, national constitution in the world. Described as an Anchor of Liberty, it has provided stability during times of war, civil crisis and deep national divisions. Henry Clay said, "The Constitution of the United States was made not merely for the generation that then existed, but for posterity -- unlimited, undefined, endless, perpetual posterity."
In celebration of this remarkable document the San Diego and Imperial County Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Presidio Hill Society of the Children of the American Revolution will meet for their annual luncheon at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20th, at the Officer's Club Ballroom at MCAS Miramar.
Assemblyman Jay LaSeur of the 77th District will be the featured speaker. Proclamations from the Governor and mayors of many of the cities in the two counties will be on display.
The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, urges all citizens to study the Constitution, and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves.Let us do so in remembrance of the founding fathers who struggled to make each word meaningful and long lasting. Let us do so with a resolve to rededicate ourselves, in the words of Daniel Webster, to "One Country, One Constitution, One Destiny".
"Operation Ball Gown Give Away" under way
The Armed Services YMCA is conducting "Operation Ball Gown Give Away" through Oct. 5. Each year the Marines celebrate the birth of the Marine Corps, a formal event that all Marines look forward to attending. Unfortunately, with many Marine families on marginal incomes, they can't all afford to go. Their priorities being their families, providing food and shelter, a formal dress is out of the question. Last year, several hundred young women were able to go the Marine Corps Ball through the generous donation of formal gowns by the community. New dresses with tags or previously worn dresses in perfect condition and professionally dry-cleaned are needed for this year's celebrations. Dresses must be appropriate for a formal affair and youthful, as a majority of the women are under 25 years old. Please do not include bridesmaid dresses. Cash and credit card donations will allow the YMCA to purchase sizes needed. No donation is too small. Deadline for donations is Oct. 5. For more information and drop-off locations, call (760) 385-4921, (760) 213-1603 or (949) 240-1231.
