North San Diego County Community News Briefs: Pug Party planned for May 5

DEL MAR - Pug Rescue of San Diego will present the 16th annual Pug Party, "Pugo de Mayo," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 5 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

The event will include pug contests, vendors, veterinarians, a raffle, prize drawings, nail clipping services, a Pug Boutique, adoption information and food. Admission is $10 and $5 for children younger than 10. Information: http://www.pugbutts.com, (619) 685-3580.

State convention to offer volkswalks

RANCHO BERNARDO - The California Volksmarch Association's annual state convention will be held May 4 through 6 at the Rancho Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte. A volkswalk is a noncompetitive walk on a designated trail.

The convention will feature four volkswalks, as well as a business meeting and social events. Members of the community are invited to participate in any of the convention activities, especially the volkswalks. The four walks will showcase the Poway and regional trail systems. Two of the walks are on trails and paved roads in the Rancho Bernardo and north Poway area. Another walk is on the Piedras Pintadas trail in the Bernardo Bay Natural Area. The most strenuous walk will lead from the Lake Poway dam through Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, up to Lake Ramona dam and return. All of the walks are 10 kilometers in length, with five kilometer options available.

All of the walks are free; optional volksmarch credit and awards are available for $3 and $5, respectively. Register for the walks at the Rancho Bernardo Winery.

Free Comic Book Day is May 5

The sixth annual worldwide Free Comic Book Day will be held May 5. Participating comic book shops will give away comic books free to anyone who visits their stores that day. Up to 44 comics are available this year, including, "Spiderman," "Justice League," "The Lone Ranger," "The Simpsons," "Mickey Mouse," "Family Guy" and many others. Single seniors club to host events

NORTH COUNTY - The North County Singles Club, a social club for single seniors ages 55 and older, will hold its Cinco de Mayo dinner-dance May 6 at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane. Dance music will be provided by Our Song. Cost is $24.

The club also meets for dinner and dancing to live music from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E. Vista Way. Cost is $13, which includes a buffet dinner.

Women's chorus to host guest night

SAN MARCOS - The Vista Hills Chorus, a women's a cappella chorus, will host an open house and guest night at 7:30 p.m. May 8 at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Ave.

The Vista Hills Chorus has been rehearsing and performing throughout North County for the past 40 years. It is open to women of all ages and walks of life. Music education is a large part of the organization, and the director, Robin Wood, presents vocal production continuously.

Diabetes support group to meet

OCEANSIDE - The North County Diabetes Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. May 10 in the Community Room at the Oceanside Mission Branch Library, 3861 Mission Ave.

Event to benefit Mama's Kitchen

LA JOLLA - Mama's Day, the annual benefit for Mama's Kitchen, a nonprofit meal delivery service for men, women and children affected by AIDS/HIV or other critical illnesses, will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. This year's event has a Latin theme, "Mama Loves Mambo."

Mama's Day is the organization's signature event, where 70 of the San Diego area's top chefs join to provide a showcase of food and beverages in support of Mama's clients who rely on the meals delivered by volunteers throughout the year.

Y-ME's Walk to Empower set for May 13

SAN DIEGO - The Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization will hold its third annual San Diego Walk to Empower, a three-mile noncompetitive walk, at 9 a.m. May 13, Mother's Day, at Mariner's Point at Mission Bay Park.

CARMEL VALLEY - HomeAid San Diego will celebrate its fifth anniversary with "A Taste of North County," an evening of outstanding cuisine and wines from North County restaurants, May 16 at Pardee Homes' model homes at Derby Hill in Carmel Country Highlands.

Proceeds will support HomeAid San Diego's efforts to provide hope and homes to temporarily homeless individuals and families in San Diego County.

Walk to benefit Fraternity House Inc.

CARLSBAD - Michaelle's Walk, Fraternity House Inc.'s annual fundraising stroll by the sea, will be held May 19 at Magee Park, Carlsbad Boulevard and Beech Street.

Michaelle Liddell was the first woman in San Diego to speak out about her HIV status and become an AIDS activist. Each year, Michaelle's Walk, celebrates the memory of Liddell and others lost to AIDS, and raises funds for the only two licensed homes in San Diego County dedicated to serving men and women living with AIDS - Fraternity House in Escondido and Michaelle House in Vista.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the coastal walk at 11. Post-walk activities, including a barbecue lunch and entertainment, will run from noon to 3 p.m.

Safe Boating class offered

OCEANSIDE - The San Luis Rey Sail & Power Squadron will offer a five-week Safe Boating class that will begin at 7 p.m. May 22 at the Oceanside Yacht Club classroom, 1950 Harbor Drive North.

The course provides essential information for new boaters in safe boat handling, state and federal boating regulations, buoys and lights and more. The class is free; however, cost for the materials and exam is $35.

Meadowbrook Middle School reunion set

POWAY - Plans are under way for the first-ever reunion for the Meadowbrook Middle School classes of 1968 to 1979.

A social hour is tentatively planned for Aug. 10 at Game Time in Poway. The main event will be a picnic with hot dogs, hamburgers and sodas from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at Lake Poway. Cost for the picnic is $10 per person (ages 10 and older). R.S.V.P and payment are required by July 1.

On Aug. 12, alumni will gather for lunch at the Hamburger Factory in Poway.
