FALLBROOK —— An iron pour has been scheduled for Nov. 5 at 300 E. Alvarado St. Event coordinator is master sculptor Peter Mitten, and it will be headed by Toby Flores, sculptor and instructor at San Diego City College and the UCSD Crafts Center.
The team also includes artists Tom Fox and David Lobdell of New Mexico, who will be accompanied by some of his students.
Since the "Iron Age," artisans have used the "cupola" method for melting and casting artistic iron objects. This iron pour will demonstrate the process. Artisans and participants will bring pre-made molds and have them cast during the event.
Interested participants should contact Mitten as soon as possible at (760) 728-2416 to schedule workshops and produce molds of the artist's work prior to the pour.
Participants with molds should check in at 11 a.m. The burn-in will begin at 4 p.m. and the molten iron will be ready to pour between 6 and 7 p.m.
Guests are welcome and are encouraged to bring a picnic meal and a folding chair.
Halloween event planned

Adrienne McCrumb of the San Diego Regional Energy Office will discuss how you to apply for free shade trees.
The San Diego Regional Energy Office, in cooperation with People for Trees, is giving more than 17,000 shade trees to single-family homes, multi-family buildings, and K-12 schools throughout Orange and San Diego counties. Participants must be SDG&E customers.
The trees are full-sized, 10 to 15-gallon nursery-quality specimens with more than 20 varieties to choose from. Each home can receive up to five trees.
Dan Meyers, manager, Grangettoís Farm and Garden Supply, Fallbrook, will discuss the benefits of organic gardening at the October general meeting of the Fallbrook Garden Club at 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.
According to Meyers, the organic approach to gardening is a method that fosters a relationship between the soil, plants and the person that in the long run is beneficial for all. He will offer suggestions on how the organic way requires less maintenance and upkeep.
Meyers has been manager of Grangettoís for 10 years. Before that he had his own gardening and landscape business.
In honor of the club's 75th anniversary, this month's meeting will feature the music, dress and cars of the 1980's. All members and guests are encouraged to dress the part.

Classical guitar performance today

Poway photo contest under way
POWAY —— The city is hosting a photo contest as part of its 25th anniversary activities. Following the theme "Poway in October," entries that depict everyday life in Poway —— person, place or thing —— taken during October 2005 are being sought.
All photographs entered into the contest must be taken by Poway residents or students of Poway schools. There are four categories: Youth, ages 12 and younger; Youth, ages 13 to 18; General; and Professional/College Photography Student. Photos will be evaluated on the basis of visual appeal, composition and originality. Color or black-and-white photos will be accepted.
Photos must be submitted as 8-by-10-inch prints, along with the negative or a digital file, by 5 p.m. Nov. 2 to the city manager's office. Entry forms and official contest rules are available on the city's Web site at www.ci.poway.ca.us.

Youth art contest winners announced
SAN MARCOS —— More than 200 youths participated in the "San Marcos Alive" art contest as part of the city's Oct. 2 street fair celebrating the arts.
Sponsored by the city's Community Services Department, the contest was open to San Marcos students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The winners received a check that was given to their teachers to purchase art supplies for their classroom.
All entries were displayed and the winners announced at the San Marcos Alive street fair. Cathy Cronin of San Marcos Community Services visited each of the winners' schools to present their winning works and checks to their classrooms.
The winners were: First place, Deepa Khatri, an eighth-grader at San Marcos Middle School, $50; second place, Dylan Martin, a third-grader at San Elijo School, $30; and third place Hurlink Vongsachang, a second-grader at San Elijo School, $20.

Boehm Gallery hosts 'Artists Invitational' exhibit
SAN MARCOS —— "Artists Invitational," a collection of works by nine highly recognized artists, is on display through Nov. 4 at Palomar College's Boehm Gallery, 1140 W. Mission Road.
The exhibit features works by painters John Asaro, Sebastian Capella, Stan Sowinski and Jeff Watts; sculptors Roy Madsen and Mehl Lawson; and watercolorists Joe Garcia, Kwan Jung and Yee Wah Jung.

Fallbrook cribbage team wins again
FALLBROOK —— The Fallbrook Senior Center Cribbage Team continued its hot streak at a recent senior challenge cribbage match. With 33 players in the match, the Fallbrook team won with 63 wins to the Oceanside team's 56 wins. This makes seven wins this year for Fallbrook to Oceanside's two.
The hottest player of the day was Ray Lanoue who won all seven games with two skunks. Anne Flaherty came in second with six wins and one skunk. Third place went to Harold Shane who had five wins and a skunk.
In the next five places were Carol Riccitelli, Lois Ash, Roy Cook, Carl Troupe and Nicki Newvine, all with five wins without a skunk.
George Williams of the Fallbrook team won the $25 gift card donated by the Fallbrook Albertson's store.
The next match will be held at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Fallbrook Senior Center, 399 Heald Lane. The match will feature seven games against seven players. All cribbage players are welcome. Friends of Vista Library hold membership drive
VISTA —— October is the month for the membership drive of the Friends of the Vista Library. The friends provide many activities for children and thousands of books for them to enjoy at the library. They also provide movies, DVDs, videos, cassettes, audios and computers for the entire community to use. Membership helps purchase items that the county budget cannot provide. The Encore Book Store in the library is run by the friends and has been a source of income to get the extras that make the library one of the best. Ballroom dance held at Oceana
OCEANSIDE —— Ballroom dancing for couples and singles, age 55 and up, will be held from 7 to9:15 p.m. Oct. 15 at Oceana, 550 Vista Bella.
