Paul Ecke volunteer receives TV honor
ENCINITAS - Russell Levan, a volunteer at Paul Ecke Central School, will receive the KGTV 10Leadership Award during the 5 p.m. news Oct. 4 on Channel 10. He is being honored for designing and developing a complete recycling program at the school. The program benefits the environment, teaches students about recycling and earns cash for the school's sixth-grade camp.
Levan's dedication to the program includes spending a couple of days a week modifying and monitoring the daily recycling of the new cardboard lunch trays he implemented at the school. For the past 20 years, the school district used only Styrofoam lunch trays, but Levan convinced the school district to use cardboard lunch trays instead. His efforts also have encouraged more recycling in classrooms and the administrative office.
He is busy implementing new projects at other local schools and plans to teach students how to make compost from the food waste this year.
The 10Leadership Award recognizes local residents dedicated to improving the community. To nominate a friend or colleague, log on to 10News.com and click on "10Leadership Award." The award committee, made up of KGTV staff members and LEAD San Diego members, reviews each submission. Nominations can also be sent to 10Leadership Award, 4600 Air Way, San Diego, CA 92102. Include phone number and address, as well as the contact information for the person being nominated.

Art is the gift that allowed her to view her surroundings in the treatment center as a palette for color and an inspiration for craft, she says. Today she is cancer free.
