Quilt show is Saturday

TEMECULA -- The Valley of the Mist Quilters Guild will hold the 10th annual Old Town Temecula Outdoor Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
More than 150 quilts on will be on display on eaves and porches of businesses along Old Town Front Street, from Moreno Street to Santiago Road, during the free event.
Valley of the Mist members will be on hand to answer questions and give information about featured quilts and quilt-making.
There will be a silent auction for small quilted items and a live auction for larger quilts, as well as quilts for sale.
A portion of the auction proceeds will go to Hugs Foster Family Agency, a local organization dedicated to providing safe, nurturing and stable homes to foster children.
Eleanor Burns will be the featured quilter during the show. Recognized as the Queen of Quilting, Burns is an author, quilt designer and the creator and star of television's "Quilt in a Day," which is aired on PBS stations nationwide.
As part of the quilt show, Burns and team are putting on a special USO Quilt Show at 7 p.m Friday. In keeping with the patriotic spirit of her newest book, "Victory Quilts," Burns will take on the role of Rosie the Riveter at the Temecula Community Recreation Center. Workshop to address Internet safety

MURRIETA -- A free workshop on Internet safety and cyberbullying will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cole Canyon Elementary School. All area parents are invited.
Wayne Sakamoto and John Vandenburgh, of the Murrieta Valley Unified Safe Schools Unit, will show parents what dangerous activities are lurking in the cyber world. From cyber bullying to social networking sites, parents will learn strategies to address Internet safety with their children.
This workshop will examine the dangers that technology poses to children, teach parents why they need to enter the cyber world themselves, and give parents tools to keep children safe and away from high tech trouble. Parents can learn about social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Bebo, cyber bullying, instant messaging, YouTube, and a historical perspective analyzing the evolution of video gaming.

University Women plan tour
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Branch of American Association of University Women is offering a free tour of Old Town at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Pam Grender, a local historian and club member, will point out places of interest and give the background and history of the city. After the tour, participants can visit the Temecula Valley Museum or the Children's Museum.
The tour begins outside the Children's Museum at 42081 Main St.
There is no charge for the tour, but fees are required to enter the museums.

Young Marines plan sale
TEMECULA -- Temecula Valley Young Marines will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Proceeds support the Young Marines in their quest to raise funds for their deployment to Hawaii for Veterans Day and kick start Temecula's Relay for Life event benefitting the American Cancer Society.
The sale is on Huron Street, off of Pechanga Parkway.
Chess club meets Sunday
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Chess Club will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday and Oct. 19 at Perks Coffee House.

Genealogical society meets Monday
TEMECULA -- Forensic genealogy will be the topic when Temecula Valley Genealogical Society meets Monday at the Temecula Public library.
A genealogy class is offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the general meeting at 6:45.
The class topic is the "The Linwood Plantation," which is near Jackson, La. Bernadine Anderson, a descendant of Linwood slaves, will discuss her family history and preservation efforts for the historical site.
At the general meeting, Colleen Fitzpatrick, an author of two best-selling books, will talk about how modern genealogists can tap into a nearly infinite library of information thanks to the Internet. She will discuss the best use of those resources and show how to further genealogy investigations by using a mix of the methods used by Sherlock Holmes and "CSI: Miami" to analyze a picture, prove a relationship or solve a family mystery.
The society normally meets the second Monday of the month, but will meet the first Monday of October due to the Columbus Day holiday.

Art group to meet
MURRIETA -- David Musser, known for his plein aire paintings of Wine Country, will give a demonstration when Gem of the Valley Art Association meets at 2 p.m. Monday at Murrieta Senior Center.
The club offers monthly competitions of members' artwork and winners are eligible for Artist of the Year and Hi-Point Artist of the Year awards.

Home tour tickets available
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Valley Woman's Club will hold its Annual Holiday Home Tour and Gala Nov. 21 to 23.
The Salute to our Warriors Gala will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 21 at Keyways Winery. It will include dinner, entertainment, military color guard, no-host wine bar, live and silent auctions and desserts.
Tickets are $100, which include a Holiday Home Tour ticket. Proceeds are earmarked for the club's Wounded Veterans Van Project.
The Holiday Home Tour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23, will feature three homes in Temecula's Wine Country that will be professionally decorated for the holidays.

Waltz classes begin this week
TEMECULA --Waltz classes will be offered Wednesday or Thursday evenings, beginning this week.
Classes will be held from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1 to 22, or Thursdays, Oct. 2 to 23, at the Temecula Community Center. The cost is $28 for either four-week session. Singles and couples ware welcome.

Author to speak at library

Fundraiser to benefit sick girl
MURRIETA -- A fundraiser for Kassidy Brewer, a 14-year-old Murrieta girl who is in a coma due to a brain tumor, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Murrieta Post Office center.
Martial artists will break boards to raise funds. Music will be performed by the band Hired Gunz.
The proceeds will go toward Kassidy's medical expenses. Any other funds will be donated to the Ronald MacDonald Center.

Monthly art walk is Saturday
