TEMECULA - Jack Raglan, a finalist in the "Next Great American Artist" contest, will speak when the Temecula Valley Art League meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mary Phillips Senior Center.
Raglan will cover 10 points of art in his lecture and demonstration.
Also, the theme for the competition for the Signature Painting of the Rose Society's annual Rose Show May 5 and 6 will be "Gardens of the World." Artists must bring their work to the Community Recreation Center at 12:30 p.m. March 1. For information, call at 677-4272.
Winners for the club's January monthly competition were Ina Ramos, People's Choice; Ron Chambers, first place, professional; and Sue Rogers, first place for her work in oils, "The Hat." Other winners were Crag Lewis, Twilla Leonard, Kim Coleman and Sue Rigers.
The theme for February's competition is buildings and structures. Competitions are held during the monthly meetings.

Project Linus collecting blankets
Project Linus, which provides blankets and quilts to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need, is offering an opportunity to win a free sewing machine to anyone who donates a blanket or quilt by Saturday, Make a Blanket Day.

The project is coordinated locally by the San Diego North County Coastal/SW Riverside County Chapter of Project Linus. The donations will be distributed to hospitals, foster care facilities, shelters, churches and other areas of need.

GOP women to gather
TEMECULA - Shirley Kaltenborn, president of the California Federation of Republican Women Southern Division, will speak when the Temecula Valley Republican Women Federated meets Monday at Sizzler. Check-in is at 10:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 11.
Kaltenborn is also past president of San Diego County Federated Republican Women and currently serves on the board of the National Federation of Republican Women.
Also speaking will be Diane McGlinchey, who is in charge of the National Federation of Republican Women Convention, which will be held in Palm Springs.

Battalion chief to address FireSafe Council
MURRIETA - Gordon Martin, who has worked on the Trabuco Ranger District of the Cleveland National Forest since 1987 and is currently battalion chief in charge of the district's fuels and prevention programs, will speak at the quarterly meeting of the Southwest Riverside County FireSafe Council. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the Bear Creek Fire Station.
Martin will speak about "Fuels Management on the Trabuco Ranger District - Past, Present and Future."

Group to hear about cooking with herbs
MURRIETA - Virginia Murphy, from Ama's Herboretum, a natural herb farm in Temecula, will speak about cooking with herbs at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Murrieta Senior Center. The free talk is sponsored by the Friends of the Murrieta Library.
Herbs have been used for centuries in cooking, aromatherapy, decorations and crafts. Guests can sip fresh herbal tea and learn how to make garden pesto and other culinary delights.

Women's Connection to meet Feb. 21

Pat Hall, a member of The Daughters of the Revolution, will give a presentation about women who served in The Revolutionary War.

Blood bank offers lift tickets
MURRIETA - The San Diego Blood Bank is teaming up with Big Bear Mountain Resorts for "Lift Up Your Sleeves for Lift Tickets" Blood Drive at the Valley Blood Services donor center through Saturday.
The first 40 blood donors at the center will receive a free lift ticket for Snow Summit or Bear Mountain.
Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood.
