NORTH COUNTY - Hidden Valley, based in Oakland, recently announced its expanded Love Your Veggies Nationwide School Lunch Campaign for the 2007-08 school year.
The campaign, offered in conjunction with the School Nutrition Association and the Produce for Better Health Foundation's "Fruit and Veggies: More Matters" program, will award $10,000 grants to 51 elementary schools in the United States. One school in each state will be awarded, plus one school in Hidden Valley's hometown of Oakland. Grants must be used to support increased access to and consumption of fresh vegetables, including using creative and innovative ways to get kids excited about eating healthfully. The grant also must help fund equipment toward a vegetable station, as well as nutrition training for school faculty and staff members.
Schools can apply for grants by visiting http://www.loveyourveggiesgrants.com. Applications will be accepted until Nov. 30.
Siemens competition accepting entries
NORTH COUNTY - America's premier high school science competition recently began its ninth year as online registration and instructions for entering the 2007-08 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology was posted on the Siemens Foundation Web sites at http://www.siemens-foundation.org and http://www.collegeboard.com/siemens.
More than $700,000 is awarded each year through the Siemens Competition, with college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 to students, as well as $2,000 per project to the high school of every regional finalist.
The competition is administered by the College Board. Students may enter as individuals or as members of a team. Students who are not able to complete registration online can call (800) 626-9795, Ext. 5849, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. eastern time for assistance. The deadline for entries is Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. eastern time.
Entries will be judged at six regional levels in November by esteemed scientists and faculty at six leading research universities: the California Institute of Technology (Region One); The University of Texas at Austin (Region Two); University of Notre Dame (Region Three); Carnegie Mellon University (Region Four); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Region Five); and Georgia Institute of Technology (Region Six). The national finals will take place in December at New York University in New York City, judged by a panel of prominent scientists and mathematicians.
Established in 1998, the Siemens Foundation provides nearly $2 million in college scholarships and awards each year for talented high school students in the United States.

Tri-tip dinner set for Sept. 7
FALLBROOK - The Fallbrook High School FFA will serve its famous tri-tip dinner before the home football game Sept. 7 against Santa Fe Christian. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ag department, located at the east end of the football field. Each meal includes tri-tip, beans, salad, dinner roll and a drink. Cost: $8. Vista resident wins scholarship
Daniel Weinburger of Vista recently was named recipient of a Global Automotive Symposium Scholarship, funded by the Breslow Foundation. To be eligible for the award, worth $1,000, applicants must be enrolled full time in a college-level program or a National Automotive Technician Education Foundation certified automotive technical program. Recipients who graduate from the program and show proof of employment as a technician for at least six months after graduation can receive a matching grant. Weinberger is attending Northwood University in Midland, Mich.
Psychology major honored
Michelle Low, the daughter of John and Nancy Low of Del Mar and alumna member of the Eta Alpha chapter of the Delta Gamma Fraternity at Pepperdine University, has been awarded a Delta Gamma Foundation Fellowship. She is studying for her master's degree in clinical psychology. The fellowship is given based on scholastic achievement, campus and community involvement, and chapter leadership. The $2,500 award is for the 2007-08 academic year.
Delta Gamma Fraternity is an international women's fraternity headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and consisting of more than 190,000 members. Its purpose is to foster high ideals of friendship among women, to promote their educational and cultural interests, to create in them a sense of social responsibility and instill in them the best qualities of character.
Mission Hills grad to go to Palomar
Ashley Thom, a 2007 graduate of Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, is a new student at Palomar College. The granddaughter of Joan M. Thom, she lives in San Marcos.
Encinitas resident makes dean's list
Justin Witzmann of Encinitas earned a spot on the spring 2007 semester dean's list at Charleston Southern University. To receive the honor, students must take at least 12 credit hours in a given semester and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Del Mar woman earns college honor
Stephanie Muller of Del Mar recently achieved dean's high honors at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. for maintaining a grade point average of between 3.7 and 4.0 percent.
Discovery seeks volunteers
SAN MARCOS - Discovery Elementary School is seeking volunteers for the 2007-08 academic year. Volunteers can assist for as little as one hour a week. Escondido residents are college grads
Andrew James McDavitt of Escondido recently graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology from Trinity University. Wisambi Clemence Loundu, the daughter of Muenge Loundu and Nduaya Kalongi, recently earned a bachelor's degree in French from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Orange Glen High School in Escondido.
Scholarships awarded
Melinda Lawson, the daughter of Robert and Lisa Lawson of Escondido, has been awarded a $10,500 President's Scholarship and a $3,000 Saints Scholarship by the College of St. for the 2007-08 academic year. She is a first-year student at the college.
The President's Scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic records, and strong leadership and service credentials. The President's Scholarship is a four-year renewable award.
The Saints Scholarship also is a four-year renewable scholarship. Recipients are selected based on their high school academic performance, leadership skills and service commitments.
