Retired federal employees group meets July 16

Eagles tribute band to perform

OCEANSIDE -- The city of Oceanside will host a free concert with music provided by an Eagles tribute band called "Boys of Summer" from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 17 at Rancho Del Oro Park, 4701 Mesa Drive. Experience a visual presentation on the Mission

OCEANSIDE -- A free program for all ages on the history of Mission San Luis Rey will take place at 10:30 a.m. July 18 in the Civic Center Library community rooms, 330 N. Coast Highway. The program will be sponsored by the Oceanside Historical Society and the library. Kristi Hawthorne of the historical society will talk about the mission and show parts of a movie called "The Vigilantes are Coming." The movie was filmed at the mission in 1936. Woman's club to meet

ESCONDIDO -- The Woman's Club of Escondido will hold a membership luncheon at 11:30 a.m. July 14 at the clubhouse, 751 N. Rose Ave. The club recently distributed $5,000 in annual contributions to philanthropies, including $2,000 to its Scholarship Foundation, $400 to the Escondido Humane Society, $300 to Interfaith Community Services, $250 to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, $225 each to a Salvation Army kids camp and the Joslyn Senior Center, $150 to Diana's Angels, $50 to Escondido Allied Veterans Council, and $200 each to Escondido Creek Conservancy, Quail Gardens, Friends of Wilderness Gardens, Nature Conservancy, Sunburst Project, Doctors without Borders and Serenity House. Book club meets second Tuesday of month

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Public Library invites readers to join its free 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting at 5:30 p.m. July 14 in the library board room, 239 S. Kalmia St. This month's selection is "An Instance of the Fingerpost" by Iain Pears. Seventeenth-century Oxford England is the setting for this absorbing, macabre tale of murder, politics, faith and betrayal. Assorted narrators, all revealing different degrees of unreliability, present their versions, not only of who killed the victim, but also of the events surrounding the crime. Gallery opens 'Dreams, Local Color' exhibit

ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido Municipal Gallery's "In Dreams/Local Color" people's choice exhibit will run from July 10 though Aug. 14 at 142 W. Grand Ave. The exhibit features more than 50 pieces of art. A reception will be from 5:30 to 8 p. m. July 11 at the 2nd Saturday Artwalk in the downtown district. Admission to the gallery is free. Village Idiots Society to meet

Ongoing art classes for toddlers offered

SAN MARCOS -- The city of San Marcos is offering art classes for 2- to 3-year-olds and their parents, grandparents or helpers as follows:

- Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive

- Fridays at 10:15 a.m. at the San Elijo Community Center, 1105 Elfin Forest Road

Beginners will experiment with painting, gluing, sticking, sculpting and printing. The classes start the first week of each month with new lessons. The cost is $48 for four weeks. Materials will be provided. Register at san-marcos.net. Call 760-744-9000.

Summer art camps for kids

Summer jazz sessions start July 13

ENCINITAS -- The nonprofit Encinitas School of Music will host jazz band sessions from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 13 to 23. The sessions will take place at 709 San Luis Rey Drive. Students 12 to 18 who have played saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar and drums for at least two years can sign up for the two-week session. Cost is $150. Women's group seeking singers

NORTH COUNTY --The all-women Threshold Singers is seeking singers. The group honors the ancient tradition of singing at the bedside of people who are struggling with living or dying. The group sings for free, but accepts donations. The singers practice the first and third Saturdays in Rancho Bernardo, and the second and fourth Thursdays in Carlsbad.
