Empty ink cartridges sought
ESCONDIDO -- Escondido High School's sophomore class is collecting empty ink cartridges to recycle and raise money to help fund their prom in 2008. The community is invited to contribute the cartridges. A collection box is located in the front office of the school, 1535 N. Broadway.
Rummage sale to fund Grad Nite
SAN DIEGO -- A benefit rummage sale will be held from 7:15 to 11 a.m. April 7 in the student parking lot of Westview High School, 13500 Camino del Sur. The event is being organized by the Westview Foundation, part of the Poway Unified School District, and will benefit Grad Nite 2007. The sale will feature a variety of items, including books, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, clothing and kitchen items. Parking will be in the main parking lot.
Scholarships available
GFWC Contemporary Women of North County, a local women's volunteer organization, will award two $500 scholarships to graduating senior girls this year: one to a student from San Marcos High School and one to a student at Orange Glen High School. The students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better, a need for financial assistance and be planning to attend a local community college, such as Palomar or MiraCosta, this fall. Applications are available from counselors at each high school and at http://www.cwonc.org. The application deadline is April 18. The group will award the scholarships to the selected students at the high school's award night in May and will honor them at its seventh annual Mother's Day Tea, scheduled for May 12 at the Wood House at Woodland Park, San Marcos.

San Marcos resident makes dean's list
SAN MARCOS -- Kylee Miller of San Marcos made the fall 2006 semester dean's list at Azusa Pacific University. A graduate of San Marcos High School and daughter of Scott and Trudy Miller, she received the honor by maintaining a 3.5 or better grade point average. She is a social work major.
5K run to benefit Valley Elementary
POWAY -- A Cinco de Mayo 5K Race and 1K Fun Run to benefit Valley Elementary School will be held May 5 at Lake Poway.
The event is sponsored by the newly formed Valley Educational Foundation, formed to provide financial support to enhance the curriculum and educational opportunities at the school. Money raised by the group will provide funding for enrichment programs, supplies, technology, music, art and physical education curriculum and staffing.
The 5K walk/run race will begin at 7:30 a.m., the 1K fun run at 8:30 a.m. The 5K race will follow the Lake Poway Trail through the mountains and around the lake. The hilly, off-road course provides beautiful views of the lake as it meanders through Warren Canyon, past the dam and around the entire lake before heading back to the staging area. The noncompetitive 1K fun run follows and easy-going path in the Lake Poway Recreation Area.
Cost to enter the 5K is $25 until April 25, $28 in person. Cost to join the 1K run is $10 until April 25, $15 in person. More information, as well as T-shirts and bib numbers, will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. at Valley Elementary's multipurpose room, 13000 Bowron Road. In-person registration will be accepted during the pre-race check-in on May 4 and on race day. Registration will be from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. May 5 for the 5K race, and from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. for the 1K fun run. Fees are nonrefundable and bibs are nontransferable. T-shirts are not guaranteed for registrations after April 20 and are first-come, first-served until supplies run out.

CHS alumna earns honor
Molly Doyle, a 2004 graduate of Carlsbad High School and a former member of the school's national champion Carlsbad Lancer Dancers, recently earned a place on the dean's honor list for the fall 2006 semester in the College of Communication at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. She is a junior and is majoring in advertising in the College of Communication.

Historical society sponsors junior historian competition
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Historical Society is inaugurating a Junior Historian Competition. Open to high school-age students, the competition strives to inspire civic pride youths. Entrants are invited to submit a project that creatively illustrates their efforts to learn about, document and/or preserve a significant aspect of the history of Fallbrook.
Subjects for project entries can focus on a Fallbrook area, a building, monument, artifact, document, event, person or theme such as agriculture, railroads or sports, with historical significance to Fallbrook.
"Contestants should select a topic of personal interest and dig into Fallbrook's history; the two will intersect at some point. If an entrant is enthusiastic about the research subject, many townspeople will find the project interesting as well as informative,' said Greg Dehm, youth coordinator on the Fallbrook Historical Society's Board of Directors.
The deadline for entries is 4 p.m. April 29. Project entries accompanied by supporting research documentation must be submitted to the Fallbrook Historical Society at its museum at 260 Rockycrest Road.
Eligible entries will be judged by the Historical Society Board of Directors, with the winner announced in mid-May. The "Junior Historian" will be awarded a prize and receive a Certificate of Distinction by the Fallbrook Historical Society. Further, his or her name will be permanently displayed as the 2007 recipient on the "Junior Historian" plaque at the Society museum where the winning project will be placed on display.

Early bird program planned
FALLBROOK -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County will operate an Early Bird Program at the Ingold Unit, 445 E Ivy St. for spring break. Golf tournament to benefit St. Peter's School
FALLBROOK -- The annual golf tournament to benefit St. Peter's School will take place April 30 at The Golf Club of California. College fair planned
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Union High School District will hold a college fair from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 17 in Room 201 on the college campus. There will be opportunities to obtain information and brochures and learn how to qualify for collegiate sports. Palomar College will give a presentation on guaranteed transfer programs to four-year colleges; learning more about testing for college, how to prepare for the tests and when to take them.

Pendleton plans open house
FALLBROOK -- Mary Fay Pendleton School will host an open house for parents of incoming kindergartners and their children at 12:30 p.m. April 26 at the school at 110 Marine Drive in the South DeLuz Housing Area.
There will be an orientation where registration packets will be available. Parents and their child also will be able to visit kindergarten classes and take part in an activity, then take a bus ride around the neighborhood.

Family appreciation night planned
FALLBROOK -- The William H. Frazier Elementary School PTA will host a family appreciation night from 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 20 at the school. It is not a fundraiser, but is a way for the organization to thank the families for supporting the group's programs and fundraisers and by volunteering.
There will be games, prizes, food, entertainment (square dancers), music and opportunity drawings. Organizers also are hoping to have firefighters and Miss Fallbrook and her court there.
Hospital auxiliary seeking scholarship applicants
FALLBROOK -- The 2007 Scholarship Program sponsored by the Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary is seeking residents from Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow and De Luz who are interested in pursuing a health care career.
Applicants may be from any age group, but must have an acceptance from an accredited college where there are curricula in health care studies. They also must have maintained a good academic record.

Soroptimist International offers scholarships
FALLBROOK -- Soroptimist International of Fallbrook is offering three scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a higher education. These students must reside in the greater Fallbrook area.
The first scholarship is a $3,000 two-year Educational Scholarship to a four-year college or university. Recipients must carry a minimum of 12 units to qualify. The payment is $750 per semester for a total of $3,000.
The second scholarship is a $1,000 Junior College Scholarship, which will be awarded to a student who will attend a junior college, and is intended to cover educational expenses during the first year at school. The recipient must carry a minimum of 12 units to qualify and the payment is $500 per semester for a total of $1,000.
The third scholarship is a $1,000 Vocational Scholarship, which will be awarded to a student who will be pursuing their education at a trade school or by taking trade-related courses at a community college. Auto mechanics, culinary arts, cosmetology and medical assisting are examples of studies that would qualify for this scholarship.
The scholarships require that an official school transcript from the most recent semester be submitted with the application. Applications are available at the high school Career Counseling Center at Fallbrook High School, Ivy High School and Oasis High School.

Journalism workshop offered
NORTH COUNTY -- The California Scholastic Press Association will hold its 56th summer workshop July 15 through 17 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The deadline for submitting applications is May 4.
Operated and taught exclusively by working professionals in print, broadcast, online and visual media, the workshop has drawn praise for its real-world techniques and deadline-oriented focus.
Participation is limited to 25 high school juniors and seniors considering a journalism career. The two-week program is built on learning by doing, and its intensive curriculum has been praised by graduates as the best preparation they received for working in the field.

Space Camp Scholarships offered
NORTH COUNTY -- The Society of Women Engineers is offering Space Camp Scholarships.
To qualify, applicants must be young minority women, U.S. citizens and be in grades eight through 11 during the 2006-07 school year. They must have participated in a science fair and similar extra-curricular activities at a local school, district, city, region, state or national level during the 2006-07 school year and cannot be a previous recipient of the SWE Campership Program.
Applicants' ethnic backgrounds must be black, Latino, American Indian or Pacific Islander. The Federal definition of Pacific Islanders is "those having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii; the U.S. Pacific Territories of Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Marianas; the U.S. Trust Territory of Palau; the Islands of Micronesia and Melanesia; and the Philippines."

Peace scholarship announced
NORTH COUNTY -- The San Diego Veterans for Peace are offering 2007 Peace Scholarships. They will be awarded to high school seniors as one overall award of $1,000, three awards of $500 and one award of $250. Veterans attending college full time can receive a scholarship of $500. Awards are for the essay topic titled "Means and Methods to Establish World Peace Without Violence." The deadline for submission is May 15. Journalism workshop offered
NORTH COUNTY -- Applications are being accepted through April 13 for the San Diego Multicultural Journalism Workshop, sponsored by the California Chicano News Media Association's Inland and San Diego chapters and various media outlets.
The workshop will be held June 17 through 29 at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and is free and open to high school juniors and seniors. Students will be housed on campus during the workshop. Students will be divided into print, television and radio instruction. Professional journalists will serve as mentors, editors and chaperones. NORTH COUNTY -- Students from third through 12th grade are invited to enter the University of San Diego Character Development Center's fifth annual Character Matters Essay Contest. The contest offers students a platform for discussion of experiences calling for honesty, respect, responsibility, courage and other virtues. First-place winners will receive $100 and a plaque; second place, $75 and a certificate; and third place, $50 and a certificate. Students will be honored at a June 23 luncheon.
