Southwest Riverside County Community News Briefs: Student wins Temecula Rotary music contest

TEMECULA - Mathew Alan Nunez from Red Mountain Christian School took home the $200 prize purse at the Temecula Noon Rotary Club's eighth annual Rotary Music Contest with his piano performance of February from the Seasons OP .37b by Tchaikovsky.

Second-place finisher Marie Forney, from Murrieta Valley High School, played Concerto in D Major - Allegro Aperto by Mozart on the flute and won a $100 prize.

Mathew and Marie advanced to semifinal competition.

Brian Choi from Vista Murrieta High School finished third with his performance of Fantaisie - Impromptu by Chopin and will be invited to the semifinals along with alternates Reinie Seibold and Andrea Leiterg.

Local students competed Feb. 21. Vocalists and instrumentalists performed in front of the more than 125 Rotary Club members and guests.

Armstrong, Chaparral, vocal; Reainie Seibold, Temescal Canyon High School, vocal; and Michelle Kristen Bakerink, home school, vocal.

The judges were Dave Norman, Marti Treckman, Eve Craig and Jon Laskin.

Winners from each Rotary club will perform at the semifinals in April and finalists will be invited to perform at the Rotary District 5330 Conference in June in Cathedral City.

Elks Americanism Essay Contest

TEMECULA - A total of 630 students from Temecula and Murrieta middle schools participated in the Temecula Valley Elks Lodge Americanism essay contest.

The program was developed by the Elks Grand Lodge as a way to teach students about American heritage and to believe in the American Dream. The theme was, "Why I am proud to be an American."

The Category I (sixth grade) winners were: first place, Nathan Kilambi, Temecula Middle School; second, Lexi Lorah, Temecula Middle School; third, Michelle Stone, Linfield Christian School.

The Category II winners (seventh and eighth grades) were: first, Mitchell Johnson, Linfield Christian School; second, Ashlee Amatulli, Van Avery Prep; third, Rachael Brady, Van Avery Prep.

History group to meet Friday

TEMECULA - Doc Lane, a longtime Old Town Temecula Merchant, will be the speaker when the Temecula Valley Historical Society holds its monthly meeting at noon Friday in the community room of the Grace Mellman Library.

For many years, Lane and his wife have operated a western artifacts store in Old Town and he will describe what it was like being a business person in Old Town in past years and at the present time.

Sons of Norway meet in Temecula

TEMECULA - The Sons of Norway, Temecula Lodge, will hear about the Viking runic alphabet when they meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Mellman Library.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in the culture and people of Norway and other Scandinavian countries.

Computer users group to meet

TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Computer Users Group will meet at two locations Saturday.

At 9:30 a.m. at the Rancho California Water District headquarters, club member Mike Loring will discuss Windows XP, and answer questions.

The group will then reassemble at the new Temecula Public Library at 1 p.m., where club president Don Collier will give a talk entitled "Perfect Backup Approach for Hard Drives."

Networking group to meet

MURRIETA - The monthly meeting of Temecula Connection, a business networking group, will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. March 7 at Honeycutt Farms restaurant.

Think Tank seeks members

TEMECULA - The Think Tank group seeks members for brainstorming and problem solving.

The group, which meets at 1 p.m. Tuesdays at the new Temecula Library, will discuss just about any subject except politics and religion. It's a place to "bounce ideas around and maybe pick up a few," according to a news release.

Planning official to address group

MURRIETA - Angel Sanchez Jr. will talk about Growing the Republican Party when the Murrieta Republican Women Federated meets at 7 p.m. March 7.

The California Federation of Republican Women provides an avenue of political involvement for women who share the Republican philosophy.

Noted quilter to address guild

MURRIETA - Carol Doak, a teacher, lecturer and award-wining quilt maker, will speak when the Valley of the Mist Quilt Guild meets at 6:30 p.m. March 8 at the Lodge at the Four Seasons.

Doak, from Windham, N.H., will talk about "One Quilter's Journey," a story of her love of quilting. She will share her piecing techniques by displaying many of her works of art.

Her first book, "Easy Machine Paper Piecing," was printed in 1994, launching her popularized trademark technique. Doak has been named one of the top 10 quilt teachers and designers in the United States, and in 2004 she was nominated as one of the 24 All-American Quilters.

New social club to meet

TEMECULA - The newly formed Encore Social Club invites members and prospective members to their monthly luncheon March 12 at Hungry Hunter.

In addition to monthly social gatherings, the club plans a barn dance, theater events, card parties and a trip to the Griffith Park planetarium.

Temecula Rotary Triathlon upcoming

TEMECULA - The Rotary Club of Temecula will sponsor its 11th annual triathlon March 25 at the Community Recreation Center.

Triathlon and 5k run/walk starts at 8 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run is at 9:30 a.m. Registration opens at 6 a.m.

The race is a fundraiser for the Temecula Rotary's scholarship program. Fees are $10 for the children's events, $25 for the 5k, $49 for the triathlon and $65 for triathlon relay. It's $5 more on race days.

Singers wanted for men's chorus

TEMECULA - The newly formed Temecula Men's Chorus is looking for singers. Experience is preferred, but not necessary.

The chorus seeks singers with above-average voices willing to commit to weekly rehearsals and periodic performances. Typical repertoire includes standards, show tunes, oldies, doo-wop and songs of faith.

There are no fees to join and ability to read music is not required.

Lions offer hearing aids

MURRIETA - The Murrieta Lions Club participates in a program that makes hearing aids available to qualified low-income persons.

After a doctor determines that a person is deaf because of physical conditions and a hearing specialist has performed an evaluative test, interested persons may contact the club to determine if they qualify for the program.

Outlets plan youth, music events

LAKE ELSINORE - Kites, clovers and clocks will be among the events this month for the Lake Elsinore Outlets Kids Outlet, a program for mothers and their preschoolers.

The children's program meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Friday.

Film series continues at college

MENIFEE - "Dark Day," a documentary about homeless people who live in an abandoned New York City railroad tunnel, will be screened at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. San Jacinto College as part of the Amnesty International Club bimonthly film series.

Films will be shown every other week until May 16. The next film will be "The Global Banquet: The Politics of Food" on March 14.

'Seussical' to be staged

MURRIETA - 'Seussical' will be performed by the Calvary Chapel Christian School drama department at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

A host of Dr. Seuss characters sing and dance their way teaching the lesson that "a person's a person, no matter how small."
