OCEANSIDE - The Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics San Diego County will hold a polar plunge, "Freezin' for a Reason," at 10 a.m. March 17 at the Oceanside Pier.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Area residents are invited to join in by pledging $50 or obtaining sponsors to raise money for Special Olympics athletes. Corporate sponsors also are welcome. Organizers hope to raise $30,000. The fundraiser also will feature events at the Oceanside bandshell, including entertainment and displays of police equipment.

Arc centers to host open houses
NORTH COUNTY - Arc of San Diego, the area's largest, most comprehensive provider of services to people with disabilities, will commemorate Disability Awareness Month by hosting an open house at its Vista and San Marcos locations.
Tours will be available at both centers to give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the Arc's efforts to enable people with disabilities to live productive lives and achieve their full potential.

Open call goes out to artists
ESCONDIDO - Artists are invited to enter the annual spring show hosted by the Escondido Art Association and Artists Gallery. The show will run from March 28 through April 27. All subjects are welcome. Artwork must be original and never before submitted for an award at Artists Gallery.
This is a juried and judged show with cash awards. The show judge will be Jeannie Moore, a prominent local artist who is part of the 10 North artist group and regularly shows in galleries around San Diego County.
Fees for first entry are $30 and $20 for members; $5 for each additional entry.

Breast cancer walk slated
SAN DIEGO - The City of Hope Cancer Center's annual 5K and 3K Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer will be held March 24 at the University of San Diego Institute for Peace and Justice Plaza. Volunteer child advocates sought
SAN DIEGO - Voices for Children is seeking volunteers to serve as court-appointed special advocates for abused and neglected children in San Diego County.
Volunteers visit and lend support to the children, interview parties involved and make recommendations to the court. Men and bilingual individuals especially are needed. Training is provided.

Awareness workshop for women offered
NORTH COUNTY - The San Dieguito River Park will host a "Women's Awareness 101" workshop from 10 a.m. to noon March 31.
Women can learn basic awareness skills that will give them the confidence needed to get out and get active. Instructor Hall Collier, who holds a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do, will teach easy martial arts techniques and offer simple tips to help minimize discomfort in any unfamiliar setting.

Law enforcement vehicles on exhibit
SAN DIEGO - An exhibit of law enforcement vehicles from the past 100 years is on display through March 27 at the San Diego Automotive Museum. The exhibit includes a 1941 Oceanside Police Department cruiser, a military police vehicle, a vintage paddy wagon, a 1951 Studebaker used in several Batman films and more.
The San Diego Automotive Museum is at 2080 Pan American Plaza in Balboa Park. Admission is $8 for adults; $6 for seniors and active-duty military; $5 for students; $4 for youths ages 6 to 15; and free for children ages 5 and younger. Admission is free to all San Diego County residents and military personnel on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Fiesta Educativa to hold conference
SAN DIEGO - Fiesta Educativa Inc. of San Diego will hold its 11th annual conference from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 14 at the San Diego County Office of Education, Joe Rindone Regional Technology Center, 6401 Linda Vista Road.
The conference is for Spanish-speaking parents of children with special needs and the professionals who serve them. A variety of workshops and exhibitors will be offered on topics such as behavior and mental health; special education; autism; sexuality; nutrition; and support systems.
A continental breakfast and lunch are included. Cost is $30 per parent or $40 per couple; $50 for professionals; and $30 for college students. Scholarships are available. Preregistration is required.

YWCA announces new leadership team
SAN DIEGO - The YWCA of San Diego County recently announced a new leadership team. The new management team will enable the 99-year-old nonprofit organization to continue to be on the forefront of services to support women and families and to implement critical fundraising for San Diego's women and children who are victims of domestic violence and homelessness.
Judy Case, former chief executive officer, stepped down from her post in February but remains committed to the organization until May, working on Becky's House 2, a shelter for abused women and their children.
As part of the new direction, the YWCA board has appointed Yvonne Campbell as interim chief operating officer. Edith Glassey and Antoinette Fallon join Campbell as part of the new executive management team as chief development officer and chief program officer, respectively. An executive search is under way for a new chief executive officer.
